Summary A rapid nutritional assessment was conducted in five districts of World Vision Ethiopia operational areas during February 2000. The objective of the In Gera keya district, it was reported that assessment was to monitor the status of two people died and 102 were sick of acute malnutrition (wasting) in the typhoid fever. ETHIOPIA JIMMA-MIZAN ROAD UPGRADING PROJECT (Project Number: P- ET- DB0 – 011) ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT SUMMARY 1. Introduction The Jimma-Mizan road upgrading project is one of the main road projects included in the Ethiopian Government’s 10 Years Road Sector Development Programme – (1997- 2007). This development programme is designed to improve and expand the country's road network in order to stimulate the economy for long term development. It is recognised that agriculture is the backbone of the economy and particular importance is placed on the development of this sector by the removal of the transport constraints facing the sector. This explains the decision to upgrade the deteriorating Jimma-Mizan road to provide market access to agricultural products and facilitate agricultural export particularly coffee produced in the project zone of influence. Road upgrading is likely to cause negative and positive impacts on the environment.The ESIA study for the Jimma-Mizan road project seeks to explain the biophysical features of the existing Jimma-Mizan road, to describe proposed realignment road sections and to assess potential positive and negative impacts of the whole Jimma-Mizan road upgrading project. It also proposed appropriate solutions to avoid or minimise any adverse impact that may result from the project during and after the upgrading process. The African Development Bank (AfDB) categorised this project as a Category 1 project, which is subjected to an ESIA. The Environmental Policy of Ethiopia (EPE) also includes ESIA policies in the cross-sectoral environmental policies and requires a project of this nature to prepare an ESIA study. -

Box: 260, Ethiopia 2,3School of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Haramaya University, Ethiopia; P.O. Box:138. Ethiopia has a broad genetic diversity among its coffee varieties. Coffee is one of the cash crop which is highly marketed through world next to petroleum. It has a great contribution in earning foreign currency and it is an income source for around 20 % Ethiopian population either directly or indirectly. Linking small producers to markets are widely recognized as a valuable development route and market outlets choice is one of the most important farm household decisions to sell their produce and has a great impact on household income. Even if the study area has great potential of coffee production, the farmers faced the marketing problem particularly in choice of appropriate coffee market outlets. This study was therefore carried out to analyze determinants of coffee producers’ market outlet choice decisions in Gewata district. Purposive and two stage random sampling technique was used and data was collected from 121 coffee producers. Multivariate probit model (MVP) was used to analyze factors influencing the choice of coffee market outlets choice by coffee producers. The multivariate probit model results indicated that quantity of coffee sold, education level, frequency of extension contacts, household size, years of farming experience, distance to nearest market, off/non-farm income, land under coffee and transport access significantly influenced coffee producers’ choice of market outlet. -

The conservation of crop genetic diversity entails the actual genetic diversity together with the existing traditional knowledge, which nurtured the crop (this thesis). 2. The issues constituting and surrounding the problems of food security may appear complex and intractable, but they are manageable, and soluble. We need only the will at the level of policy, a more assertive and a more committed role at the level of the professional and a more free and a more decisive participation at the level of the peasantry (Mesfin Wolde-Mariam, 1999). 3. Increased production and consumption of indigenous crops such as enset will increase food supplies and may also broaden the food base at both household and national level (this thesis). 4. Conservation becomes more sensible and effective when it is linked to the food security and livelihood systems of the local communities (this thesis). 5. The Ethiopian proverb "A home without a woman is like a barn without cattle" indicates an awareness about the important role of women both in the house and on the farm. 6. Hardly anywhere are target groups taken as equal partners on the basis of respect for then- knowledge, technology, world views and capability (Arte, 1992). 7. The diversity contained in indigenous agriculture at crop, field and regional level offers greater yield stability than does the less diverse industrial agriculture (Cleveland, 1993). -

To this end, 4 separate interviews with 4 interviewees, 2 focus group discussions with 17 participants, and non- participant field observation were conducted to generate significant and reliable data. Besides, the researchers employed secondary data to make the study more significant and complete. The findings of the study show that since the source of medicines is the environment, the community protects their environment unless the society wouldn’t accessed the natural medicines they need. The study also reveals that most of these folk medicines used by the Maccaa Oromos are from 30 plants. This further indicates the society protects the natural environment to get the plants they use for medication. Thus, folk healing practices are crucial on the one hand to treat illnesses, and to protect the ecosystem on the other hand. However, these societal knowledge is undermined as well as they are being replaced by western (scientific) knowledge, modern medicines. -
