Mission MOTHER MCAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL is a Catholic educational community committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of the and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as life-long goals.

HISTORY A small group of Mercy Sisters arrived in in 1846, led by Frances Warde, Catherine McAuley's closest friend. Within weeks they opened a "select school" that became St. Francis Xavier Academy for Females, the first school chartered in the city of Chicago. The course of study covered primary, secondary and collegiate levels. The first building was located on Wabash Avenue between Madison and Monroe Streets. When the Chicago Fire in 1871 destroyed the original building, St. Francis Academy relocated to 29th and Wabash for a short time, then to a larger site at 49th and Cottage Grove in 1900. In the 1950's, the southwest side of Chicago needed a Catholic girls' school to serve a fast-growing population. In 1956 "the Academy" relocated once again. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and St. Xavier (which is now a ) opened in the fall of 1956 to serve secondary and post secondary women students respectively. McAuley opened with 523 students, 300 of which were first year students. Today the enrollment is approximately 1300 young women. These young women and the 150 faculty and staff members form the present day McAuley community. DEAR FRIENDS,

As you read this letter, a new era has begun at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. I recently completed my term as Chair of the Board of Trustees and I am delighted to turn the reins over to Mrs. Anne Edwards-Cotter ’73 – an exceptional business and community leader who will serve Mother McAuley well in the exciting years to come. We have also transitioned to a new administration model to further enhance the school’s incredible potential. Dr. Christine Melone will continue in her role as President and Mrs. Claudia Woodruff will now serve as Principal. This model provides for the school’s continued growth and outreach by allowing the President to focus primarily on strategic planning, institutional advancement (including recruitment, marketing and development), alumnae relations and financial stewardship. At the same time, it allows the Principal to focus directly on academic affairs, student life, faculty/staff, parents and the day-to-day administration of the school.

In our 165th year, we are truly privileged to continue Catherine McAuley’s faith- filled mission to educate young women and are grateful for the sponsorship by the Sisters of Mercy. The school remains committed to its rich tradition of providing a rigorous liberal arts curriculum that is relevant to the needs of today’s students and prepares them to be confident leaders of the future. To this end, the school proudly partners with nearly 200 grade schools whose graduates come not only for exceptional college preparation, but also to experience the McAuley “lifetime advantage” of endless opportunities.

I am extremely proud of our accomplishments this past year, most especially those of our students. Once again, I am pleased to report that the Class of 2011 graduated 369 students, 100% of which were accepted to college! (This is the second consecutive year that we’ve had 100% college acceptance for our graduating class.) Even more impressive is the fact that they received over $23 million dollars in scholarships!

Another significant achievement is that we took on the very ambitious project of replacing the school’s west parking lot within two short months during the summer break. The lot was completely rebuilt with 100 additional parking spaces, enhanced lighting, a new storm water retention system, wrought-iron fencing, and beautiful new landscaping to cap off a tremendous improvement to our campus.

We hope you enjoy this Annual Report. We will share our successes, acknowledge our benefactors and profile two of our distinguished alumnae. You will see that we proudly honored the Bigane Family and Ms. Marion McFarland ’55 at Celebration 2011 - a wonderful event that raised nearly $54,000 for Mother McAuley’s Scholarship Fund which provides much-needed financial assistance to our very deserving students.

Mother McAuley is able to boast of so many achievements primarily because of you - our dedicated supporters. We simply could not continue to provide the very best educational experience to our students without your generous financial support. We are eternally grateful for you and all you do for our school and our students.

Best regards,

MAKING A BEQUEST OR OTHER PLANNED GIFT TO MCAULEY Where would we all be if Sister Agatha O’Brien, RSM had chosen not to plan and start the Academy? Planned giving is a key component of the long-term endowment growth to secure the future. Your participation will send a powerful statement of support to our students and teachers while inspiring others to follow in your example. Most planned gifts are as simple as naming Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School as a beneficiary to an estate plan—a simple will, or trust arrangement.

Please give us the chance to thank you and acknowledge your commitment to McAuley and our students. Notify the school of your intention, or if you have already provided for the school in your estate plan please contact: Thomas Geraghty, 773-881-6557 or [email protected]. Scholarship News We are very pleased to announce three new scholarships: THE HANK AND VIRGINIA MURPHY AWARD Recently we asked Francie Murphy to explain why she decided to create a scholarship now? What was the motivation to “Give back to McAuley?”

Awakening the Donor in All of Us by Francie Murphy (’73) Oftentimes, pop culture icons or sports stars are asked These two passages have served as “game changers” by journalists to reflect on the people or things that in my life and I pray they motivate more alumnae to inspired them. The answers are fairly predictable – a share their good fortune with others. The Hank and devoted teacher, a loving parent, a demanding coach. The award was established in -- “Let us consider how we may spur one another on honor of her mother and father who often struggled toward love and good deeds” and Luke 12:48 -- “From financially to pay her tuition when she was a student, everyone who has been given much, much will be yet sacrificed because they wanted her to receive a demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted McAuley education. with much, much more will be asked.”

THE ST. THERESE, THE LITTLE FLOWER, SCHOLARSHIP The St. Therese, the Little Flower Scholarship is a $2500 tuition scholarship available to current McAuley students of all levels. Four scholarships will be awarded. The scholarship was established by the family of McAuley alumnae in order to support current students in their pursuit of a Mother McAuley High School education. The family believes strongly in McAuley and wishes to remain anonymous. They are very pleased to be able to help students who are in need of financial assistance, who have solid academic and behavioral records, and, most importantly, who have demonstrated a strong willingness and commitment to service.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ESTABLISHES THE LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP Each year, Mother McAuley boasts more than 300 legacy students. Like their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and thousands of other women before them, these young women share the educational journey begun by Catherine McAuley. Beginning with the class of 2015, all daughters of Mother McAuley High School Alumnae will automatically receive a $500 non-renewable tuition scholarship. This scholarship was created to assist incoming freshmen and was established by the Board of Trustees. In addition to the fundraising events the Mothers Club also sponsors the following events: Mother and Daughter Mass and Reception in the fall, hospitality for both Open House marketing events, Senior Father and Daughter Dance, Graduation Dress Resale Day, Mother and Daughter Retreat, and the Senior Family Mass and Baccalaureate Awards and Reception in the spring.

Mothers Club two major events: Vendor Fair The Annual “Ladies Night Out” Vendor Fair hosted by the Mothers Club brings in vendors from the community for a pre-Christmas shopping event. Alumnae Mothers Chapter The mothers of McAuley graduates have created a chapter of the Mothers Club for those who choose to continue their association with McAuley after their daughters have moved on to college. Their mission is raising funds for student financial aid. Their main fundraising method is through the MACS Ltd., a store run by volunteers and leading the effort is Mrs. Joan Claussen. THE FATHERS CLUB The Mother McAuley Fathers Club is dedicated to fostering good relations between dads and daughters through activities of a social and spiritual nature. Fathers Clubs major event: Freshmen Family Picnic and Tuition Raffle Seven years ago, the Fathers Club began hosting the Freshmen Family Picnic to welcome incoming freshmen and their families. In addition to the food, games and music provided by the McAuley Fathers Club, the winner of the Tuition Raffle is announced that day. The Club sponsors the Tuition Raffle to raise funds for Financial Assistance for McAuley students. The winner of this raffle will have one daughter’s Mother McAuley tuition paid for the year or $6,000 cash if the winner does not choose to take the tuition payment as a prize. The Fathers Club will pay the current year’s tuition to the school and all prepaid tuition is refunded to the winner. Extra courses and books will not be covered. The raffle is one of the Fathers Club’s biggest fundraisers of the year. Alumnae Association MARDI GRAS PARTY A SUCCESS On February 25, 2011, Mother McAuley High School hosted its first-ever Mighty Mac Mardi Gras Party at 115 Bourbon Street. The event welcomed community, alumnae, spouses and friends. Proceeds from the event benefitted McAuley’s student clubs, organizations and sports programs. The event was sponsored by the St. Xavier Academy/Mother McAuley Alumnae Association. MCAULEY ALUMNAE FORM THE MOTHER MCAULEY LAW SOCIETY We are pleased to report that a new Law Society has been formed by and for Saint Xavier Academy and Mother McAuley alumnae, parents of current students or alumnae and any woman or man in the legal field associated with the Mother McAuley community. The Law Society provides opportunities for those in the field of law to socialize, network and learn from one another while giving back to Mother McAuley. The Law Society’s events include social networking nights, luncheons, assisting the Mother McAuley Mock Trial Club and the development of a mentoring program. The Law Society was created and will be led by the Law Society Board Members: Tricia Rooney ‘95, Heather Mulligan Begley ‘95 (Founding President), Kellyn Doyle Coakley ’94, Kelly Maloney Kachmarik ’94 and Jessica Durkin ’02. According to Kelly Doyle Coakley, Assistant State’s Attorney, “I discovered who I was and what I was capable of accomplishing at McAuley. I feel compelled to do what I can to ensure that other young women can have the same foundation McAuley afforded to me. Once I began talking to other attorneys who graduated from McAuley we all agreed on one thing, we all benefited from an all-girls education and its strong foundation enabled us to be the attorneys we are today.” THE MOTHER MCAULEY CLASS OF 1960 CELEBRATES 50TH REUNION Mercy Day marked a wonderful event at Mother McAuley, members of the Class of 1960, the first class to spend all four years at the new campus, returned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their graduation. Mother McAuley celebrates Mercy Day on the last Friday of September each year by “Telling the Story of Catherine McAuley.” It is a day of joy, celebration and festivities highlighting historical records of the Sisters of Mercy. The Class of 1960 attended the student Mercy Day assembly, followed by a luncheon and tour of the building where they saw “new” improvements such as the auditorium and the main gym—spaces that did not exist when they were McAuley students. The afternoon ended in Mercy Chapel as songs of McAuley High filled the room. As mentioned above, these women were Mother McAuley’s first graduating class to complete all four years in the current building. As freshmen they had joined the Classes of 1957, 1958 and 1959, who started their studies at Saint. Xavier Academy, located on Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago, and who finished their studies at new school facilities located at Mother McAuley. Alumnae Association PUTT AND PARTY GOLF OUTING Thank you for your continuous support of the McAuley Alumnae Board Annual Putt’n Party Golf Outing. This event raises money for the Alumnae Tradition of Excellence Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance to incoming legacy students. A legacy student is the daughter, granddaughter or niece of women who graduated from St. Xavier Academy or Mother McAuley. The outing includes nine holes of golf at Stony Creek Golf Course in Oak Lawn, followed by a buffet, raffle drawings and dance music. In addition to golfing, proceeds are generated through the support of local sponsors.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING

Members of the Mother McAuley Alumnae Chorus gathered at Christmas-time for their annual caroling event. The choir is led by Sister Ellen Marie Ryan, RSM—long time music teacher and current Development Office volunteer. The choir performs favorite Christmas songs for the residents of Manor Care Nursing Home and for the Sisters at Mercy Convent. Another long-standing tradition is for the alumnae to join the students in the Hallelujah Chorus at the annual Christmas Concert. Former chorus and orchestra members take the stage with current students as they perform this famous holiday song. Celebration 2011 The extended family of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts honored Marion McFarland ’55 with the Distinguished Alumna Award and the Bigane Family (Anne ’76, Katie ’78, Sheila ’79, Meg ’82 and Julie ’84) including a posthumous award to long-time McAuley friend and benefactor, Mrs. Edward J. Bigane who passed into her eternal life shortly before the Celebration Event.

Celebration 2011 was held on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The event was attended by nearly 500 benefactors and friends as we celebrated the lives of our honorees who exemplify the charism and values of Catherine McAuley, carry on the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the mission of Mother McAuley.

The Catherine McAuley Leadership Award was presented to the Bigane Family. The Bigane Family— Mrs. Edward J Bigane, Anne Bigane Wilson ’76, Katie Bigane Larson ’78, Sheila Bigane Bauschelt ’78, Meg Bigane ’82 and Julie Bigane Pollard ’84—has been a part of the McAuley community for nearly 40 years and has a long history of community involvement.

Mrs. Bigane became involved with the school when Anne was a freshman in 1972. While each of the girls was at McAuley, Mrs. Bigane was an active member of the Mothers Club and served a term as President. She loyally ran the Benefit Drive year after year and continued her involvement after Julie graduated as a member of the Alumnae Mothers Club. She volunteered her time in MACS Ltd. bookstore and played bridge monthly with the club. As a gift to their mother for her 80th birthday, the girls formed a scholarship fund to assist senior students with tuition, books, fees and graduation costs. Mrs. Bigane was humbled and flattered when she heard she was being honored at Celebration, and loved hearing about all the friends and family who were planning to attend. Mrs. Bigane passed away on April 6, 2011 and received the award posthumously. She wanted all of us to celebrate in fellowship at the evening’s event, giving thanks to the McAuley community, which has meant so much to the Bigane Family.

The Distinguished Alumna Award was presented to Marion McFarland ‘55. Marion is a dedicated and selfless volunteer of Mother McAuley High School. Mother McAuley Non-Profit Liberal Arts High School Organization 3737 W 99th St US POSTAGE PAID Chicago, IL 60655 Rescigno’s Marketing Connections

Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School is named for Mother Mary Catherine McAuley, the woman who founded the religious community of the Sisters of Mercy. Mother McAuley, formerly Catherine Elizabeth McAuley, was born in Ireland in the late 18th century. Catherine McAuley lived with a wealthy couple following the death of her parents. Upon the death of this couple, she inherited their large estate. Recognizing the needs of the sick and poor in Ireland, Catherine chose to use this inheritance to help others. She opened the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland to help house and educate poor young women. Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy because she wished to see this work continue. Other young women joined her new community so that together they could serve the poor, the sick and those in need of education. Today, all over the world, the Sisters of Mercy along with committed lay women and men, follow in Catherine’s footsteps by offering mercy-filled service to others in need.

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF CATHERINE MCAULEY Loving God, you chose Catherine McAuley for the service of your people who are poor, sick and uneducated. You inspired her to found the Institute of Mercy so that these good works might endure. Give to each of us, her daughters and friends, a portion of her compassionate spirit and an ardent desire to serve your suffering people. Bless all our undertakings and grant that union and charity may always thrive among us. Graciously hear our prayer for Catherine, and by granting the favors we ask through her intercession, hasten the day when her sanctity will be celebrated by all the church. Amen (Praying In The Spirit of Catherine McAuley, 1999, Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, p. 28)
