Visit to Harts Flying Fighters Museum A combined visit with members of Logan RAAFA, certificate of thanks, and a RAAFA plaque. This plaque and cadets from No 219 Squadron Air Cadet to Hart’s was made by a member of our Association, Stan Curran. Flying Fighters Museum on Saturday 7th of 2001 We then proceeded to the Air Cadet’s building, attracted some 50 attendees. This museum is located also located at Archerfield for a barbecue. The barbecue at the corner of Wirraway Street and Beaufighter was prepared by the cadet’s parent’s group, and was Avenue, and contains 22 World War Two Aircraft, a huge success, Juicy steaks and sausages together restored to flying condition. Presentation Spitfires in Australian Service Vers 2 – Gordon Birkett It was early in World War II when Lord Beaverbrook, the Minister for Wartime Production, originated the idea of the "presentation aircraft”. The idea was a morale boosting exercise for a population that was facing, almost alone, the onslaught of the German war machine in 1940. A "price list" was set out with £5,000 for a single-engine aircraft, £20,000 for a twin-engine aircraft and £40,000 for a four-engine aircraft. Air Marshal Sir Richard Williams Air Marshal Sir Richard Williams KBE, CB, DSO (3 August 1890 – 7 February 1980) is widely regarded as the "father" of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He was the first military pilot trained in Australia, and went on to command Australian and British fighter units in World War I. A proponent for air power independent of other branches of the armed services, Williams played a leading role in the establishment of the RAAF and became its first Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) in 1922. He served as CAS for thirteen years over three terms, longer than any other officer. Williams came from a working class background in South Australia. He was a lieutenant in the Army when he learned to fly at Point Cook, Victoria, in 1914. As a pilot with the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) in World War I, Williams rose to command No. 1 Squadron AFC, and later 40th Wing RAF. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and finished the war a lieutenant colonel. Afterwards he campaigned for an Australian Air Force run separately from the Army and Navy, which came into being on 31 March 1921. The fledgling RAAF faced numerous challenges to its continued existence in the 1920s and early 1930s, and Williams received much of the credit for maintaining its independence. However an adverse report on flying safety standards saw him dismissed from the position of CAS and seconded to the RAF prior to World War II. Despite support in various quarters for his reinstatement as Air Force chief, and promotion to air marshal in 1940, he never again commanded the RAAF. -

In reality they impersonated a defence system without substance and an actual siphon of Australia’s military resources towards their own ends while offering only a potentially high-risk strategic alliance that helped bring Australia to the brink of disaster. As just one outcome on 18 January 1942, over two months after the Japanese air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, less than half a squadron of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Wirraway lightly armed training planes alighted from an airstrip at Rabaul on New Britain ostensibly to intercept a Japanese naval air armada of over one hundred modern military aircraft, the outcome of which was a national tragedy. The Australian-made and manned Wirraways were shot from the sky or crash-landed with the loss of most of their crews. -
