These differences between the two countries could be attributed to the fact that universal banking in Germany creates implicit barriers to entry. Yet, regulatory and informational differences which are unrelated to universal banking could be responsible for the observed difference as well. This paper provides a stylized theoretical model of the banking industry, which suggests that market segmentation and limited market entry can be due to a number of factors, including information costs. Preliminary empirical evidence does not provide clear evidence for the hypothesis that universal banking is the reason for the observed differences in financial systems. The discussion papers published by the IAT represent the views of the respective author(s) and not of the institute as a whole. © IAT 2018 2 The Banking Systems of Germany, UK and Spain from a Spatial Perspective: The Spanish Case Stefan Gärtner* and Jorge Fernández April 2018 Abstract When looking at the Spanish banking market through a German lens, the differences between the banking markets in these countries and between decentralised and centralised systems with regard to the SME‐credit decision‐making process become obvious. Despite our hypotheses that Spanish savings banks were similar to German savings banks until the crisis, or at least until liberalisation and before the break‐up of the regional principle, we came to the conclusion that they were never as significant as savings banks in Germany, at least not for SME finance. Notwithstanding recent initiatives to create a common European market and to integrate diverse national banking systems, the European financial system remains spatially complex and uneven, particularly with respect to the degree of geographical concentration. -

Preliminary agreements for this have now been signed by the three companies. The partners see this as an important step in implementing their strategic objectives and as an important signal for the consolidation of the German banking market. For the three banks' clients, nothing will change: The clients' accounts will continue to be kept, as before, with their respective banks. As a result of this agreement, Postbank will become one of the leading payments clearing houses in Germany. A few days ago, Postbank announced it was examining the possibilities of an IPO within the next 18 months. For this reason, Professor Dr. Wulf von Schimmelmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Postbank AG, sees the transaction as "an important component of the planned IPO". It strengthens the bank’s new business field "Transaction Bank". "The capacity of our platform will be used more efficiently. Thus, we can present a win-win situation for everyone involved: Our partners will be able to reduce their costs; we will be able to increase our revenues." Already today, Postbank is one of the big players in clearing payments, handling over 10 million transactions per day. For Deutsche Bank, this is a further logical step in the concentration on its core businesses and represents a high-performance partnership.
