Presentation

LIMONIUM, SOCIETAT d’ACTUACIONS AMBIENTALS, was born as a company on April 1996.

It is formed by a pluridisciplinar team of young but experienced professionals, educated in the items of environmental sciences, engineering, biology, land planning and environmental education. Limonium offers its experience to companies, public administrations and individuals, and because of this, two different working teams have been created: environmental consulting and communication and environmental education.

Limonium spp.

Limonium is the latin name of a genus of plants named Sea-Lavanders or Statice in English. They belong to the famíly Plumbaginaceae, being small and generally linked to salty environments (salty marshes, inland and coastal salty soils and first coastal line). They consist morfologically on a basal rosette of leafs, usually fleshy, and long floral stems, with colors that change from white to violet through pink. The essence of genus Limonium defines the philosophy of our company:

• Diversity: genus Limonium has more than 100 species in the Iberian Peninsula • Adaptation to local conditions: there is a different Limonium in almost every different cliff or salty marsh. • Adaptation to difficult conditions: Limonium plants always grow in difficult environments, in places that are harsh for other species. • Humility: Limonium are always humble plants, that know their limitations and that only flower when conditions are proper.

The Hoopoe - Upupa epops

This species is an interesting bird with tropical aspect which, generally, only stays in our lands in summer and spends the winter in sahelian and sabana zones, in Subsaharian Africa, but it is more often seen staying year round in Europe. It uses all kind of habitats, from traditional Mediterranean tree crops, to gardens, bushes, pastures and periurban environments. The hoopoe adds another character to our company:

• Adaptation to changing conditions: able to change its vital cycles in answer to environmental and climate changes, in a territory in transformation.

Merits and qualifications

Limonium S.L. is qualified by the Land Stewardship Network (Xarxa de Custodia del Territori) as an Expert Node. The Expert Nodes is a programme created by XCT in order to promote the participation of companies and professionals who have expertise in items related to Land Stewardship, so to give support to NGOs which are members of XCT and other organizations involved in Land Stewardship.

Limonium S.L. is a company which is neutral in CO2 emissions, being certified by Zero CO2 Stamp given by the NGO Acció Natura. In this sense, Acció Natura calculates the emissions of green-house effect gases generated by the activity of Limonium S.L. (energy spent in the offices, trips and paper use). Limonium then compensates these emissions with and economic support to reforestation

projects which are certified as CO2 Sinks. In this case, Limonium S.L. collaborates with the reforestation of the Atlantic Jungle of Serra do Lucindo (Brasil).

Limonium S.L. has organised the reforestation events inside the campaign 35 Forests “Let’s Plant the Future” as commemoration of the 25 Anniversary of Catalunya Ràdio and 10 years of Fundació Territori i Paisatge de Caixa de Catalunya.

The professionals of Limonium S.L., since 2004, are members and participate in Catalan Society of Environmental Education (SCEA). SCEA is an organization created in the year 1985 so to promote a renewed education which includes the social and environmental problems and, at the same time, contributes to educate citizens who are capable to analize these problems and give response to them. SCEA includes professionals interested in environmental education, from very different origins and tasks, and with the same aim: to work towards sustainability from education.

Limonium S.L. is inscribed in the General Census of Environmental Education Organizations of Catalunya, created by the Environmental Departament of the Catalan Government through Order of 17th October 1995 (DOGC núm. 2.125 of 8-11-1995). The main aim of this Census comes from the need the Government has to achieve a real and permanent knowledge of the organizations working in environmental education in Catalunya and, at the same time, spread their work and their existence.

Limonium S.L. believes that part of the responsability of a company in modern society is collaborating on the formation of future workers. In this sense, Limonium S.L. has established collaboration contracts for practicing in the company with the Universities of Girona and Rovira and Virgili, and also University of Aveiro (Portugal) through Leonardo Programme, and Estonnac School in Tarragona. Moreover, Limonium S.L. has received several students of different Master Degrees and pHD for their compulsory practices.

Land Planning

Since the approval of Catalan 2/2002 Land Planning Law and the inclusion of compulsory environmental assessment in land planning, Limonium S.L. has been a leader in, first, preparation of environmental land planning assessment and, afterwards, with the approval of DL 1/2005 of strategic environmental evaluation proceedings, having achieved a very important CV. Limonium S.L. is now one of the companies with bigger experience and better prepared to face the challenges of the incorporation of environmental criteria in land planning.

Agenda 21

Agenda 21 and Action Plans for Sustainability are processes emanated from Rio de Janeiro UN Earth Summit (1992) focused on orientating local public administration towards horizons of sustainability. They consist on environmental, social and economic audits, followed by Action Plans, which have incorporated a strong sense of public participation.

Natural Environment

Since its beginnings, Limonium S.L. has been specially interested in giving its knowledge and expertise in the fields of biodiversity conservation and enhancement. Through the work of external specialized professionals, Limonium S.L. has developed several studies on fauna and flora especies of interest searching their protection or THE compatibility of their presence with human activity. Working together with protected areas managers and landowners, Limonium has developed an adapted methodology for the design of management plans and natural resources ordenation plans of natural sites and properties with a high natural value.

Some of these areas, due to several problems, needed projects of intervention or restoration, also in river, coastal or agricultural areas. From the inspiration of the projects in the natural environment comes the interest in the writing of projects in green urban and periurban zones with the main objective of multifuncTionality and the insertion of the natural net in the urban environment. In this sense, the inventory of tree patrimony relates both aspects.

Natural Sites

Public Use and Management Plans for Natural Sites

In our territorial context, the natural sites (designated by law or unprotected) usually have to survive in spite of people’s strong lack of knowledge over its natural values, threats that are suffering and potentials that can be developed. There is generally a lack of clear planning. Limonium S.L. has adaptated, from current methodologies such as Eurosite Management Plans to Especial Plans and Carrying Capacity Studies, several own tools to facilitate the decision making of the rulers and managers of the natural sites. Limonium S.L. has also worked on the search for economic funding of these decisions.

Some especial sites have been degraded through different factors such as sewage water, all kinds of dumpings or the activities of quarries or gravel pits. These places need specific treatments of morphological and ecological enhancement that are designed for every particular situation.

Green Areas

The green areas, both public and private, are of a great social, landscaping and environmental interest. Limonium understands that green areas, no matter their original motivation, have to be multifunctional. They also have to respond to efficiency criteria (in the use of land, water, energy and cost of maintenance), beauty criteria (diverse in forms, textures and colors) and biodiversity enhancement criteria (introducing in the urban web bits of the surrounding nature). Riverine and Coastal Environment

Wetlands, coastal areas and riverine systems are, at the same time, the most scarce habitats and the sites that present a higher number of natural singularities in our Mediterranean area. Some flora and fauna species might be an opportunity for Landowners and protected areas managers to increase the value of a territory and to search for financial funding. Citizen participation

After the documentary phase of an Agenda 21 (writing down of all the documents including the socioenvironmental diagnose and the action plan) the municipalities are aware of the necessity to boost its accomplishment and follow its progress.

Moreover, many other technical works, studies or projects (like Land Planning processes or other environmental assessment procedures) need strategies of citizen participation both to achieve a better knowledge of the local reality and also to reach a social consens.

Generally, Limonium works with:

Environmental teaching

The specialization on environmental aspects of Limonium staff has allowed the demand of their services as teachers and lecturers in different Courses, Workshops, Conferencees and Master Degrees organized by public administrations (SAM-Diputació of Tarragona, City Hall of Reus, City Hall of Cambrils, Government of Múrcia, Government of Catalunya), Social Associations and NGOs (Landstewardship Network, GEPEC-EdC, SEO-BirdLife) and Universities (URV, UdL, UAB, UPC, UB).
