More Sir Percy, Please!By Karen AmrheinThis is my ninth Scarlet Pimpernel book, so it's reasonable for you to assume that I enjoy Baroness Orczy's books. I do. I love the character of Sir Percy Blakeney / the Scarlet Pimpernel, but that's also the problem. In this, and some of the other sequels, there's just not enough of him!About a third of "Lord Tony's Wife" is quite wonderful. The story is exciting, Sir Percy and the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel are "on screen" doing their thing. Sadly, there's also a long slog through the nasty details of The Terror and the entirely unappealing characters of Representative Carrier and Citizen Martin-Roget / Pierre Adet. The unsavoriness of the French Revolution is spelled out in far too much length, especially for anyone who has read the original "Scarlet Pimpernel" (and why would you be reading this sequel else?) or any of the other sequels."Lord Tony's Wife" has three sections -- Prologue: Nantes, 1789; Book I: Bath, 1793; and Book II: Nantes, December, 1793. The prologue establishes the characters of Pierre Adet (later Martin-Roget), M. le duc de Kernogan, and his daughter Yvonne de Kernogan (later, Lord Tony's wife). All three come across as pretty unlikeable, though ironically, Pierre Adet is the most sympathetic of the three, since he is treated completely unjustly. Still, the prologue is exciting and fast-paced.Book I is a lot of fun. We get Sir Percy / the Scarlet Pimpernel in both iterations and we have Marguerite and various members of the League. We also have Martin-Roget (né Pierre Adet) -- now entirely unlikeable, and Yvonne de Kernogan -- now entirely sympathetic. Yvonne's transformation from cruel aristocrat to heroine apparently occurs "off stage", since from the end of the Prologue to the beginning of Book I we must simply accept the fact that she's now the one to cheer for. All that aside, Book I is a lot of fun.Book II is rather dreary. Mostly, it consists of descriptions of the various cruelties and cruel personalities of The Terror as practiced in Nantes. It's a long while before the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel appears to set things to rights. As ever, whenever Sir Percy is on the page, the story just shines. "Lord Tony's Wife" -- and each of the Scarlet Pimpernel sequels, for that matter -- falters only in not giving us enough of him. Long live the Scarlet Pimpernel! For the record "Lord Tony's Wife" was published in 1917 and is the third of the Scarlet Pimpernel sequels by order of publication, or the seventh by order of events. Here is a list of Sir Percy books (not including Scarlet Pimpernel prequels or sequels that don't feature Sir Percy), by order of events (publication date in parentheses): The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905), Sir Percy Leads the Band (1936), The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1919), I Will Repay (1906), The Elusive Pimpernel (1908), Eldorado (1913), Mam'zelle Guillotine (1940), Lord Tony's Wife (1917), Sir Percy Hits Back (1927), Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1929), The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1922), A Child of the Revolution (1932). "League" and "Adventures" are short story collections.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One Of Orczy's Best!By Leonna BurnsLord Percy advises and helps the gallant Lord Tony to secretly wed his beloved, Yvonne. The plot is fresh and vibrant, sad and trecherous, happy and chivalrous, detailing more on The Reign Of Terror and how it affected the smaller towns, all in one book!Orczy's books take you there! Late 1700's - early 1800's! I feel as if I had been there! What great writing! With the help of a disgruntled and vengeful peasant, Yvonne's father helps kidnap her from Lord Tony, taking her to a place where the peasant plans to marry her, even though she is already married, to make her life miserable, or she and her father will die.Enter Chauvelin, Lord Tony, and Sir Percy Blakeny and the story rocks along. You will absolutely LOVE how Sir Percy, AKA The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Lord Tony rescue Yvonne and whisk her away in Chauvelin's own carriage! :o) Foiled again! The humor, daring, and seriousness of each situation is true to Sir Percy as well as attributed to Lord Tony.I highly recommend this and all of Orczy's books!Enjoy!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved it!By C. EstradaLoved it - a must for any Scarlet Pimpernel fan! I read the original years ago but only recently discovered that Orczy had written numerous sequels, and I'm enjoying every one! Working through the plot twists is like following Columbo as he tries to solve a mystery; it's no surprise that Orczy also wrote detective novels. The whole concept is just so much fun! Interestingly, though, she remains true to the historical reality of the period at the same time. Enjoy! This anthology is a thorough introduction to classic literature for those who have not yet experienced these literary masterworks. For those who have known and loved these works in the past, this is an invitation to reunite with old friends in a fresh new format. From Shakespeare s finesse to Oscar Wilde s wit, this unique collection brings together works as diverse and influential as The Pilgrim s Progress and Othello. As an anthology that invites readers to immerse themselves in the masterpieces of the literary giants, it is must-have addition to any library. • THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL by Baroness Orczy
THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL by Baroness Orczy Marguerite said nothing for a moment or two, as she surveyed with obvious delight the not very prepossessing little figure before her. Chauvelin was then nearer forty than thirty--a clever, shrewd-looking personality, with a curious fox- like expression in the deep, sunken eyes. He was the same stranger who an hour or two previously had joined Mr. Jellyband in a friendly glass of wine. “Chauvelin . my friend . .” said Marguerite, with a pretty little sigh of satisfaction. “I am mightily pleased to see you.” No doubt poor Marguerite St. Just, lonely in the midst of her grandeur, and of her starchy friends, was happy to see a face that brought back memories of that happy time in Paris, when she reigned--a queen—over the intellectual coterie of the Rue de Richelieu. She did not notice the sarcastic little smile, however, that hovered round the thin lips of Chauvelin. “But tell me,” she added merrily, “what in the world, or whom in the world, are you doing here in England?” “I might return the subtle compliment, fair lady,” he said. “What of yourself?” “Oh, I?” she said, with a shrug of the shoulders. “Je m’ennuie, mon ami, that is all.” They had reached the porch of “The Fisherman’s Rest,” but Marguerite seemed loth to go within. The evening air was lovely after the storm, and she had found a friend who exhaled the breath of Paris, who knew Armand well, who could talk of all the merry, brilliant friends whom she had left behind.

"It was the sound of a good, solid, absolutely British `Damn!'"Par bernieI first saw several movie versions of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and always wanted to see the Play. With the purchase of a Kindle and text-to-speech I could not afford to pass up the book.I was amazed to see that the book started out like the movies with the telling of the blood lust of the French revolution and how one man for the sport of it saved many from the guillotine thwarting the authorities and tricking the sergeant at the city gate into letting him through. Then I was afraid the story was going to bog down as we took a long time to drudge through a scene in an inn.

Just SillyBy Douglas J. BassettIn Revolutionary-era France, a woman is saved from a rabid mob by the man who killed her brother years ago, the man she's sworn to destroy.I have a fairly high tolerance for melodrama and melodramatic sequences and even I found this one just plain silly. Orczy on some level seems to agree, as she starts the book with a long explanation/justification for a character who would do such odd things in the story -- presumably to try and make her more plausible? I guess? I'm not sure it really works, at the very least you can feel the heavy degree of contrivance in it. The love interest, humorously, is just stick-stone stupid -- it's the only way the melodrama/story can play out, but it's impossible to take him seriously. Basically beefcake, to be honest about it, just done a little more sophisticated than one is used to seeing nowadays. My guess is that this was a test run to see if a series was possible -- the Scarlet Pimpernel appears here, but strictly in a supporting role.
