First Japanese edition, in English. OCLC records one copy, at the Japanese National Diet Library. ¶ The first twelve chapters of The Innocents Abroad or the New Pilgrim’s Progress, Clemens’ famous travel narrative of his trip to Europe and the Holy Land, first published in 1869. Following the conclusion of the text on page 81 is the colophon in Japanese, which is followed by a three-page list of bookstores in Japan that carry works published by Kinkodo Publishing. Kinkodo was apparently a large publishing house; a search of their name and location yields thousands of records on OCLC, and the subject matter ranges widely. Cloth somewhat soiled and rubbed; very good copy. $1,800.00

Another OCLC record describes a differentR ussian edition, dated 1896, but mysteriously without listing a holding. ¶ Translated by Countess Muraveva for the series “Zolotaia Biblioteka” - Golden Library. The illustrations are from the first French edition of 1886. The publisher’s advertisements contain useful information about other titles in this series (see above under Frances Hodgson Burnett for another example). Paris: Publié par Gustave Barba, [circa 1849-51] Large 8vo, 22 parts bound in two volumes, contemporary red quarter calf, red cloth sides, gilt rules and lettering. Illustrated by Bertall. Early or first French editions of this translation. Cf. Spiller and Blackburn, page 24, etc.; OCLC records the individual titles, but cites very few locations. ¶ 23 titles by Cooper, translated into French by Emile de la Bedolliere and nicely illustrated by Charles Albert d’Arnoux, aka Bertall (1820-1882), the prolific French illustrator. These titles, and several others by Cooper, were originally issued in parts in Barba’s series of Romans Populaires Illuistrés and were apparently later issued bound together. Spiller and Blackburn state that the series or individual titles were reprinted five times between 1849 and 1875. The 23 titles here were bound randomly, each with separate paginations and it is likely they were bound from the parts. The text of each of the two volumes is preceded by a title-page or cover apparently from the original parts issue. Round stamp of the Bibliotheque Paroissiale on the title-pages and on a few pages of text. The binding title reads “F. Cooper / Oeuvres / Illustrees.” At the foot of each spine is the ownership name of “G. Hantraye.” Edges a little rubbed; very good set. $1,800.00
