hirty years ago, I was invited to attend St. Philomena by my late friend, Judy Miller. After just one or two visits for Mass, my teen aged son and Mom both let me know that they "really liked" this new church.

T Their approval sealed the deal and we became members with my son, Jeremy, even getting involved in the youth group. A few years later, I was only too happy to introduce my fiance, Clement, to this special community. We set our wed- ding date based on Father Pete's availability to marry us and were happy that he was present to help us celebrate our 25th

wedding anniversary in 2016. Thanks to all for making this such a special part of our lives. Christine D’Angela

It’s special to start the day with mass. Then, to the preparations. The best decorations for the holidays are often the simplest, so get out the pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, bittersweet and other autumn gifts. Hollow out a pumpkin and put a kale inside and tuck in a few corn stalk tassels and some bittersweet or mums and you have your centerpiece. Use baskets for your fruits and vegetables and fresh herbs. Check your garden for whatever is drying on the stem… it can make a lovely dried arrangement. The children can string sliced apples and cinnamon sticks and dry them for garlands at the windows. The kitchen is the holiday staging area. The traditional menu is roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, squash and of course the pumpkin and apple pies for dessert. Each family likes to have their own traditions for the meal, so guests can bring their specialties. Today we may add some vegetarian or vegan dishes so we can please all. Everyone likes to gather in the kitchen helping the cook or just sharing conversation. When the meal is ready, everyone gathers round the table for the blessing. It can be father or mother who says the grace, or maybe the youngest child. During the meal or over dessert, everyone can take their turn to say what they are grateful for. After dinner, if it is not too cold out, it is pleasant to go for a walk and enjoy the last fall evenings before the snow falls. Sometimes walking between dinner and dessert is somewhat helpful for the digestion. Coming back to a house with a crackling fire is very inviting. Share some family stories, play games or watch a holiday movie together. Wishing you all the blessings and calmness of a life of gratitude … a quiet joy. “Gratitude can turn common days into Thanksgiving”. Wm. Arthur Ward

Readings for the Week of A Family Oriented Community November 18, 2018 We first found St. Philomena back in the early 80’s when we stopped by a Sunday Summer Fair that was being held in the parking lot. We spoke with Fr. Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Pete for quite a while. He was so kind and friendly and we knew this was Dn 12:1-3; Ps 16:5, 8, 9-10, 11; the Parish for us. Our family has met so many wonderful people and Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mk 13:24-32 made many great friends here. It has truly been a family oriented com- Monday munity.
