WRITTEN QUESTION E-1439/10 by Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE) to the Commission Subject: Flooding in Stratoni (Halkidiki) connected with mining operations and possible consequences On 10 February 2010, torrential rains caused a watercourse to burst its banks, resulting in a landslip engulfing Stratoni (Halkidiki). The disastrous consequences1 were witnessed at first hand by the questioner, who arrived at the scene on Saturday, 13 February 2010. Local residents recorded on video attributed the disaster to the collapse of a makeshift barrier erected by the gold mining company to contain deposits of materials accumulated in the course of mining operations, the nature and composition of which is unknown. In a letter of 17 February 2010 to the Minister for the Environment, the mayor of Stagira-Akanthos expressed concern at the existence in the area of varying quantities of materials accumulated in the course of mining activity, only some of which had been identified, and which were a potential source of environmental problems in not only Stratoni but also Ierissos Bay as a whole2. In a further letter3, sent the same day to the Central Macedonian branch of the Greek Technical Chamber, the Mayor requested the convening of a committee of independent experts to investigate and report on the causes of the landslip, the origin of the rubble and the chemical content of the substances contained therein. Can the Commission provide the following information: 1. Has it received information from Greece concerning this serious occurrence and the possible resulting risks to the environment? 2. Will it ensure that the causes of the landslip and the chemical composition of the substances contained therein are the subject of a thorough investigation? 3. Should the disaster prove attributable to natural causes, could the Commission agree to contribute to compensation payments for the local residents, the most obvious source being the European Union Solidarity Fund? 4. Should the cause lie with human error on the part of the mining company, what measures will it take to secure compensation for the local residents and ensure compliance with adequate environmental safety standards in future? 1 Houses and shops were destroyed, dozens of vehicles were engulfed in mud and residents trapped inside their homes were at risk of their lives. Many vehicles were swept away by the floodwaters, finishing up in courtyards or even on rooftops. 2 http://kinisipoliton.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/epistoli-yp-periv-17-02-10.pdf 3 http://kinisipoliton.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/epistoli-tee-17-02-10.pdf 806952.EN PE 435.551.
