WIGGLESWORTH, Skipton Farmer Walked Away with an Easter Spring Lamb Championship Double at Gisburn Auction Marts Shows Last Thursday (26 March) and Monday (30 March) GISBURN MONDAY MARKET REPORT PRIME LAMBS, CAST SHEEP Date: Monday 30 March 2015 Forward: 598 Total Prime Sheep To incl 15 Lambs 503 Hoggs 80 Ewes EASTER PRIME LAMB SHOW & SALE Champion Easter Spring Lamb from Robert, James & Jack Lambert WIGGLESWORTH, Skipton farmer walked away with an Easter spring lamb championship double at Gisburn Auction Marts shows last Thursday (26 March) and Monday (30 March). Winning first prize in the best single continental lamb class on Thursday, with a January born Beltex lamb, which went on to win the overall championship award on Thursday, weighing 41kgs, the lamb sold at £159 or 388p/kg to pre-sale show judge-Alan Beecroft on behalf of Countrystyle Meats Farmshop, Lancaster. Mr Lambert was triumphant yet again on the Monday, with another Beltex lamb, which again won the best single continental lamb class before picking up the overall championship award. Weighing 38kgs the lamb sold at £120 or 316p/kg to AM Alam on behalf of Lancashire Direct Halal Meat Ltd, Blackburn. Whilst on Thursday Richard Fitton, Manchester had a successful day when he picked up the reserve champion award with a pure Suffolk lamb, which weighed 47kgs and sold for £136 or 289p/kg to Countrystyle Meats Farmshop. Alongwith Charollais sheep farmer-Robert Towers, Farleton, Lancaster when he sold a run of lambs which topped at £130 for a 47kgs Charollais and averaged £115.14 ahead. Two young heifers from popular vendor Fred Parkinson sodl at £1800 and £1740 and G Midgley was next in line at £1700 to Frank Wrathall. Pre-sale show judge Richard Umpleby picked out a seven week old British Blue bull, sired by Fertility Plus and out of a Holstein Friesian dam from Brian Blezard, Hothersall, Ribchester, Preston as champion, which earlier in the day won the best British Blue bull class, the calf later sold for £535 to John Swann, Little Ouseburn, York. Mr Blezard’s next under the hammer was his third prize British Blue bull which sold for £500 to G Baxter & Son, Garforth, Leeds who also purchased another British Blue bull calf from the same vendor for £498. David Shuttleworth, Gargrave, Skipton had a successful day when he picked up the second prize rosette, in the British Blue bull class and reserve champion which was eight weeks old and again sired by Fertility Plus and sold for £528. Top priced Simmental bull calf also came from Mr Shuttleworth at £492. The best British Blue heifer class was dominated by craven farmers with Richard Lancaster, Horton in Craven, Skipton picking up the first prize rosette with his calf which was knocked down at £375. Regular vendors, David & Pauline Newbould, Newsholme achieved £385 for their second prize heifer calf. Ian Wellock, Kirkby Malham, Skipton received the third prize rosette for his calf which sold for £355. Rearing calf auctioneer, Rachel Capstick, commented “Demand was high for calves with 37 Continental calves being keenly bid between £400 and £498. Although the book we found does not have “Visitors Book” on the cover it appears to have some named visitors in it. These signatures all appear to be from June 2000 and would seem to be related to visits to Clarke’s Old School or the village for the Millennium celebrations. We will check with some of the local signatories to establish if this is the visitors book previously referred to. It was also suggested that we add a section to the website regarding the origins of the surname Wigglesworth and the website address for the Wigglesworth name group.

    Bowland Bus Study Introduction Introduction 1. Introduction This report details the findings of a survey of bus passengers using the B1, B10 and B11 bus routes which converge on Slaidburn from Settle and Clitheroe in the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Beauty. It was jointly funded by the Area of Outstanding Beauty and the University of Central Lancashire, whose Institute of Transport and Tourism conducted the research. 2. The Bus Services Operated by the Little Red Bus Company and supported by North Yorkshire County Council, the B1 has six return journeys a day, leaving Settle at: 9:00, 11:00, 12:25, 14:25, 16:10 and 18:30 and leaving Slaidburn at 9:45, 11:45, 13:10, 15:10, 16:55 and 19:15. The journey lasts 35 minutes and serves the villages of Rathwell, Wigglesworth and Tosside, where it makes a detour into the caravan park to serve residents, staff and visitors before rejoining the main route. The service serves Settle station with rail services to Leeds, Skipton and Carlisle and passes close to Giggleswick station with services to Morecambe, Skipton and Leeds. At Slaidburn, each service connects with a B10/B11 service to or from Clitheroe. These services are operated by Tyrer Bus and supported by Lancashire County Council. Their circular routes connect Clitheroe, Newton, Slaidburn, Dunsop Bridge, Whitwell, Cow Ark and Bashall Eaves. Each day there are five services in an anti-clockwise direction (B10) leaving Clitheroe between 10:20 and 18:12 and five services from Clitheroe in a clockwise direction (B11) leaving between 7:10 and 17:05.

    THREE PARISHES – ONE MISSION The Parishes of Settle, Giggleswick and Rathmell with Wigglesworth Holy Ascension, Settle St Alkelda’s Giggleswick Holy Trinity, Rathmell with Wigglesworth The Anglican Diocese of Leeds comprises five Episcopal Areas, each coterminous with an Archdeaconry. This is now one of the largest dioceses in the country, and its creation is unprecedented in the history of the Church of England. It covers an area of around 2,425 square miles, and a population of around 2,642,400 people. The three former dioceses were created in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to cater for massive population changes brought about by industrialisation and, later, mass immigration. The diocese comprises major cities (Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield), large industrial and post-industrial towns (Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury), market towns (Harrogate, Skipton, Ripon, Richmond and Wetherby), and deeply rural areas (the Dales). The whole of life is here, along with all the richness, diversity and complexities of a changing world. The Diocesan Bishop (The Rt Rev’d Nick Baines) is assisted by five Area Bishops (Bradford, Huddersfield, Kirkstall, Wakefield and Ripon), and five archdeacons (Bradford, Halifax, Leeds, Pontefract, Richmond & Craven). The parishes of Settle, Giggleswick and Rathmell with Wigglesworth lie in the Bowland and Ewecross Deanery of the Ripon Episcopal Area, in the Archdeaconry of Richmond and Craven. The Bishop of Ripon is the Rt Rev’d Dr Helen-Ann Hartley. Our vision as the Diocese is about confident clergy equipping confident Christians to live and tell the good news of Jesus Christ.
