CASE STUDY Bourne Leisure: Butlins Resort, Skegness 2016 Butlins Resort Skegness secured its place in Britain’s social history when it became the first Butlin’s holiday camp to be opened by founder Billy Butlin in 1936. Now owned by holiday and leisure sector giant Bourne Leisure Holdings Ltd, Butlins Resort Skegness specialises in short family breaks and caters for 500,000 visitors every year. In a recent refurbishment of 214 shower rooms, Coram ShowerPods were chosen as an ideal showering solution for the resort’s high-use requirements. www.butlins.com Overview Butlins Resort Skegness is located on the Lincolnshire coast. In a recent update to 214 bathrooms, the resort was in need of an effective and high-quality showering solution to replace an old and outdated system. With a view to substantially improving showering facilities in their family-friendly accommodation, the Bourne Leisure team set-about searching for a modern showering option that would fit their exacting requirements. Solution Being one the UK’s busiest short-break locations, Butlins Resort Skegness wanted to ensure that their bathroom refurbishment project would provide a long-term solution to the leakage problems they were experiencing within some of their older showering arrangements. A (very personal) history of Barnet and District AC In early 2017 the club magazine Editor wrote to me, saying: “I'd like there to be some things in the next issue relating to the club's 50 anniversary/history etc. Would you be able/willing to contribute something?” Without hesitation I said yes, and here it is. I have chosen to write three parallel intertwined stories. They are the main points in the development of the club in the early years, illustrated with some results and reports from those days from the relevant club magazines, and interspersed with some observations on my own short running career once I arrived on the scene (thankfully for you that was not until 1982!). There are thousands of results and reports, and I have tried to select items of interest and/or relevance. I have tried to not dwell on, or comment too often on, the ‘but things were different/better in them days’ aspect of athletics. I leave you to interpret the content as you wish. Considerable license has been taken in editing down mag reports to their core detail. What fantastic weather for the families we arranged holidays for, here are a few comments from some of the families we helped last year….. “You are precious memory makers.” “Without you we would not have been able to go on a wonderful holiday.” “This is the first holiday we have EVER had as a family.” These are the type of comments we receive from families all the time. This is what helps make each year so special for us at CF Dream Holidays. 2018 2018 was another great year for Dream Holidays. Our income, although not quite as much as in 2017, was over our budget level and with our hard work and the good discounts we receive from many of the holiday companies such as Haven and Butlins, we were able to help 223 CF children and their families with a much needed respite holiday. We were also very lucky once again to be given some free holidays in Duchally Country Estate in Scotland by the wonderful people at CLC World Resorts and Hotels. In addition to this we continue to use holiday accommodation on the Isle of Wight which is much loved by the families who are lucky enough to go there with us, that and the numerous free tickets to the many attractions on the Island make this a great choice for the families. We have received lots of lovely postcards and photos from families, many of which you will see throughout this report.

Historical Sites Butlin’s Skegness Butlin’s Skegness The Butlin’s brand name was to define the family holiday experience, and in doing so it was to change the face of the British leisure industry. The historical context Holiday trends in Britain in the early 20th century By the late 19th century, the railways had opened up most of the country to tourism and holidays in the countryside or, for most people, at the seaside. The initial beneficiaries of cheaper transport were the middle classes, but by the turn of the century the tradition of the British working-class holiday was firmly established, especially to seaside resorts, whether as a long stay visit or a daytrip. Resorts such as Blackpool, Scarborough and Southend became popular, and a whole entertainment industry sprung up to cater to tourists. The census of 1911 reveals that 55% of English people were visiting the seaside on day excursions, while 20% were talking holidays requiring accommodation. Many of the visitors could not afford to stay at expensive seafront hotels and sought out cheaper accommodation in guesthouses and “bed and breakfast” houses. The first guesthouses had a reputation for being run-down places, ruled by tyrannical landladies with lists of rules and regulations. As standards improved, families often returned to the same guesthouses year after year. Camping became popular in the late 19th century, and after the First World War, “pioneer camps” opened, offering basic accommodation with a “hands on” approach. Life under canvas increased in popularity in the inter-war period in line with the trend towards healthy outdoor living.
