Natural Environment Evidence Base for the Enterprise Area BATH CITY RIVERSIDE ENTERPRISE AREA MASTERPLAN NATURAL ENVIRONMENT EVIDENCE BASE On behalf of Feilden Clegg Bradley for Bath and North East Somerset 06 NOVEMBER 2015 Rev 2 Final BATH RIVER ENTERPRISE ZONE MASTERPLAN BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES EVIDENCE BASE FEILDEN CLEGG BRADLEY FOR BATH & NORTH EAST SOMERSET NOVEMBER 2013 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The present document constitutes a synopsis of the ecological baseline for the Bath Riverside Enterprise Area. The synopsis goes beyond summarising current ecological resources within the BCREA and its relevant vicinity; the key potential for the enhancement of ecological resources and ecosystem services is also indicated and illustrated. At this stage the document is a working draft for B&NES review and comment. As such certain sections relating to potential and enhancement are not fully complete. Also, whilst generic and representative fauna of the key habitats could have been listed, it is preferred to inform such a listing with the actual records from the Bristol Biological Records Centre, work that is still in progress. The key conclusions of the review work undertaken to this point in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem services are as follows: 1. There are some very significant ecological resources in their own right given the urban context of the BCREA that need to be protected and where possible conservation status enhanced: primary amongst these are bats, Otters, Kingfishers, Peregrines and fish. 2. Whilst there are remarkably vegetated and reasonably dark (given the wider urban context) sections of river bank at the western end of the BCREA, 50% of the banks are hard structure with limited value in terms of hinterland vegetation. 3. Accordingly there is considerable scope for enhancement both of the biodiversity habitat and corridor value of the BCREA and the associated ecosystem services that this can furnish to the residents of and visitors to Bath. 4. The work has identified key ‘nodes’ along the BCREA where wildlife corridors intersect and/or there are features of particular ecological value in the river channel. 5. Enhancement works should in the first instance consolidate and enhance resources at these key nodes. 6. Between the nodes, a variety of possible techniques for installation and retrofit of biodiverse green infrastructure would appear to be both viable and desirable. Some of these techniques should be the subject of pilot applications before implementing at large scale. 7. Key drivers for net enhancement of the BCREA should be the concept of what has come to be known as ‘Biophilic Design’, whereby incorporation of biodiversity, clean water and variations in aspect and view can contribute focally to the wellbeing and productivity of citizens, thereby also resulting in a general increase in the perceived quality of place.     Nachtvlinderonderzoek in de Wassenaarse duinen Wouter Moerland Neeltje van Zuytbrouckhof 50 2311 WD Leiden [email protected] In de duinen bij Wassenaar worden sinds 2004 nachtvlinders gevangen. De eerste vlinderinventarisaties vonden plaats als onderdeel van de veldcursus ‘dierecologie’ aan de Leidse universiteit. Tegenwoordig zijn er particuliere initiatieven, zoals excursies van de NJN of de Leidse biologenclub. Kleinschalig vlinder- onderzoek toonde al de aanzienlijke vlinderdiversiteit in de Hollandse duinen: resultaten tot 2006 wor- den gepresenteerd door Van Alphen (2006). Sindsdien is het onderzoek voortgezet, met enkele grote inventarisaties. In juli 2007 en 2008 is in verband met de toen nieuwe website www.microlepidoptera.nl de omgeving van veldstation De Klip grondig bemonsterd. Ook buiten dit ‘vlinderhoogseizoen’ is volop gevlinderd, van maart tot in de december. Op basis van deze aanvullende vangsten presenteert dit artikel een herziene en geactualiseerde soortenlijst van nachtvlinders. Het geeft een overzicht van de resultaten van zeven jaar nachtvlinderen in de Wassenaarse duinen. Onderzoek naar nachtvlinders Vlinders (Lepidoptera) vormen in Nederland een diverse groep insecten: ongeveer 2200 soorten zijn er gevestigd (Noordijk et al. 2010). Een niet-wetenschappelijk maar pragmatisch onderscheid wordt gemaakt tussen de ‘grote’ en ‘kleine’ vlinders. Een derde van die 2200 soorten wordt gerekend tot die grote vlinders, de macrolepidoptera (macro’s), inclusief dagvlinders. Het overige deel, de kleine vlinders, wordt microlepidoptera (micro’s) genoemd. Alle vlinders die niet tot de dagvlinders worden gerekend, bestempelt men als nachtvlinders. Figuur 1.   • Moths on Slepe Heath 2017 – 2020
    Moths of Poole Harbour is a project of Birds of Poole Harbour Moths on Slepe Heath 2017 – 2020 The ‘Moths of Poole Harbour’ (MoPH) project was set up in 2017 to gain knowledge of moth species occurring in Poole Harbour, Dorset, their distribution, abundance and to some extent, their habitat requirements. The study area shares the same boundaries as the Birds of Poole Harbour (BoPH) project. Birds of Poole Harbour recording area Slepe Heath is a large expanse of lowland heathland contiguous with Hartland Moor and forming an integral part of the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve established in 2020. The site is owned and managed by the National Trust. The site has undergone extensive pine removal within the last decade or so and has a variety of heathland types within it. Extensive dry heathland slopes are bordered to the north by a fringe of damper communities. To the western edge a marshy area is fringed by secondary woodland. Slepe Heath was initially visited following discussions with Mark Parsons at Butterfly Conservation. This site is the known stronghold for the seriously declined Speckled Footman, which became a target species for the project. MoPH visited the heath regularly from mid-July 2017. One of the target species for the Plantlife led ‘Back from the Brink’ Project is the Purbeck Mason Wasp whose larvae feed on the micro-moth Acleris hyemana larvae. MoPH targeted the adult moth in early spring 2018 and 2019 in two of the known sites for Purbeck Mason Wasp on Slepe Heath. Three main areas were regularly visited.

    Notes on the Scottish Macro-moth List, 2015 This list aims to include every species of macro-moth reliably recorded in Scotland, with an assessment of its Scottish status, as guidance for observers contributing to the National Moth Recording Scheme (NMRS). It updates and amends the previous lists of 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2014. The requirement for inclusion on this checklist is a minimum of one record that is beyond reasonable doubt. Plausible but unproven species are relegated to an appendix, awaiting confirmation or further records. Unlikely species and known errors are omitted altogether, even if published records exist. Note that inclusion in the Scottish Invertebrate Records Index (SIRI) does not imply credibility. At one time or another, virtually every macro-moth on the British list has been reported from Scotland. Many of these claims are almost certainly misidentifications or other errors, including name confusion. However, because the County Moth Recorder (CMR) has the final say, dubious Scottish records for some unlikely species appear in the NMRS dataset. A modern complication involves the unwitting transportation of moths inside the traps of visiting lepidopterists. Then on the first night of their stay they record a species never seen before or afterwards by the local observers. Various such instances are known or suspected, including three for my own vice-county of Banffshire. Surprising species found in visitors’ traps the first time they are used here should always be regarded with caution. Clerical slips – the wrong scientific name scribbled in a notebook – have long caused confusion. An even greater modern problem involves errors when computerising the data.

    SRGC ----- Bulb Log Diary ----- ISSN 2514-6114 Pictures and text © Ian Young BULB LOG 25.....................17th June 2020 Meconopsis baileyi and Corydalis mucronipetala We planted out a number of Corydalis mucronipetala seedlings in this bed and now they are starting to seed. Earlier in the season the flowering colour in the New Bed Beside the Pond was provided by smaller early flowering bulbs, now these have completed their seasons growth as just a few Trillium hibbersonii and rivale are still to shed their seed, the larger plants such as the Meconopsis, Corydalis, make use of the same space. My interest in plants started when I was a boy in the wilderness of the Scottish mountains so it is not surprising that I encourage the garden to become wilder as I let nature take control with minimal intervention. I take great pleasure from wild moments like this combination of Celmisia, sprawling from where it was originally planted, being joined by a number of the plants that we allow to self-seed. The majority of these pictures were taken in a thick haar (mist) which along with some rain is bringing a welcome relief to the garden. I have been worried about the effect of stress, caused by our unusual long dry spring, on the plants we grow but now they all look refreshed with moisture hanging thick on their leaves and at their roots. We encourage all the bulbs to set seed as well as allowing their leaves to die down naturally so we can enjoy the colour change as they turn yellow on the ground, in contrast with the plants still in full fresh green growth.

    Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 I (Westenhanger area and Kiln Wood) One of the more interesting habitats in TR13 I is the lake at Folkestone Racecourse, which holds breeding Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe and Coot, with these being joined by Gadwall and Pochard in winter, whilst White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Wigeon, Pintail and Goldeneye have also occurred on occasion, generally during cold weather, though the lake is prone to freezing over during prolonged frosts. Snipe can sometimes be found in the ditches by the lake and Reed Buntings breed in the surrounding vegetation, whilst Marsh Harrier and Merlin have been noted overhead. The parkland area around Westenhanger Castle used to hold Spotted Flycatchers but this species has since declined considerably. Black Redstart has been recorded singing from the racecourse buildings and may occasionally breed here. The fields in the Hillhurst Farm area may attract Lapwings and occasionally Golden Plover, whilst when left as stubble in the winter of 2013/14 they held a flock of up to 50 Yellowhammers, together with single Jack Snipe and Corn Bunting, and small numbers of Stock Doves, Sky Larks, Meadow Pipits, Linnets and Reed Buntings. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls may be attracted, with a peak count of about 100 in November 2013. Kiln Wood has breeding Buzzard and typical woodland species, including Nuthatch, whilst Woodcock, Siskin and sometimes Lesser Redpoll may winter and the small pond in the wood can attract Mandarin. In May 2009 a singing Wood Warbler was present but was presumably just a migrant.

Ovo istraživanje, temeljeno na fotografijama, uglavnom se provodilo na području livada, neobrađenih poljoprivrednih površina, rubova šuma i dvorišta na području istraživanja te predstavlja doprinos poznavanju faune danjih i noćnih leptira Bjelovarsko-bilogorskog područja i Hrvatske.

Yellow corydalis (Corydalis lutea = Pseudofumaria lutea) is a shortlived perennial in the bleedingheart family (Fumariaceae). The genus Corydalis has approximately 300 species, and the name derives from the Greek ‘korydalis’ meaning crested lark, a reference to the fact that the plants’ flowers resemble a lark's head. Other common names of yellow corydalis include yellow fumitory, hollowort, and yellow larkspur. Native to the southern Alps of Europe, this plant is hardy in zones 4 through 8. Yellow corydalis plants form neat mounds of finely cut, delicate-looking light-green to blue- green foliage, somewhat resembling the foliage of maiden hair ferns or bleeding hearts. The pinnately compound leaves have three lobes, and are pale green above and glaucous (i.e., waxy) below. The leaves are borne on weak, hollow and fleshy stems. Plants grow up to 18 inches tall, but often are much shorter. In mild climates, yellow corydalis remains evergreen (although not necessarily attractive), but in climates with colder winters, dies back to the ground. In very hot summers or during drought, plants may also die back, but they often resume growth in the fall when cooler, moister conditions prevail. In Wisconsin’s relatively cool climate, when planted in a moist site, yellow corydalis does not die back at all. Yellow corydalis plants have finely cut foliage This is in contrast with the majority of other with yellow, tubular flowers. Corydalis species that are more easily heat- stressed and prone to dieback. As its name suggests, yellow corydalis produces bright, golden-yellow flowers.

There I found record high temperatures, grass baked brown and scorched heather and I was tempted to write, “More of the same: For 2019 see 2018.” However, in 2019 we have been spared a Beast from the East and a Storm Emma. Scorched Heather – Roy Jones During the 18 months since Juliet Bullimore retired from the task of putting this Report together, having done it for six years, we have not been able to find a volunteer to take her place. Last year the Report was compiled by a “committee” and most of the people involved also had other duties elsewhere. The continuing lack of a volunteer means that the same situation prevails this year. We are particularly grateful to John Bebbington who drew the Report together last year and is doing that job again this year despite now also being the Webmaster and Secretary of the Common Advisory Group. We urgently need a volunteer to take over this task. There must surely be one or two people out there who have a keen interest in the natural environment and enjoy what the Common has to offer who would be interested in joining the Advisory Group with a view to becoming the manager of the Annual Report.
