Small or large, changes and unexpected events affect each and every one of us and we can often be tempted to resist or deny them or simply go with the flow. We can also often be tempted to react in an ungracious and vengeful way. Paul, writing in his letters to the various churches established around the Mediterranean, frequently mentioned the stability which he hoped the Christian community could provide in an ever changing and volatile world (even then) – imploring those, to whom he wrote, to be vigilant in their proclamation of, and living, the gospel with its teachings of Jesus. One of the mainstays of our Christian tradition is forgiveness. It is spoken about every time we recite the Lord’s Prayer – that prayer which Jesus left us as template for all prayers – “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”. In this volatile world the need for forgiveness couldn’t be greater. As I write this we commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Brighton Bombing – something very near to my heart as I was living in Brighton and attending the Conservative Party Conference at the time (1984) and it was only due to an unforeseen delay that I was not in the Grand Hotel that night. In my involvement in politics, and in particular Irish politics, I have had the privilege of meeting the daughter of one of those who died that night. Today she frequently attends conferences on peace and reconciliation with the IRA man who planted that bomb. They share a stage together and whilst she could never condone what he did that night, she has forgiven him and he, for his part, has accepted the responsibility and the hurt, damage and destruction which he caused to many lives. She is a brave lady 4 because most of her own family have disowned her for this action of forgiveness. I am currently reading a book by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu entitled simply “The Book of Forgiving”. Forgiveness is not a simple matter – indeed Tutu makes it clear that forgiveness can be very difficult indeed. It is not about exonerating the perpetrator, it is not about forgiveness only in the context of justice having been done. It is not even a gift from the victim to the perpetrator – requited or not. It is about the victim giving themself the gift of forgiveness. Only then can the victim become fully alive as God’s human creation otherwise bitterness and resentment will eat away and destroy the person whom God wants them to be. As with the daughter of the Brighton Bombing victim, forgiveness can look like a weak option compared to that of revenge; but the truth is that it isn’t. It is the tough option - one which will make the person stronger and more gracious in the eyes of God and of the world at large. Divine forgiveness, however, comes from God alone after repentance and prayer. Michael Michael Barratt, Lay Licensed Minister Sara Bossom wishes to thank ALL those who so generously supported her in sponsorship, prayers and presence on the day (especially with the banner on The Green!) during her successfully completed Clarendon Marathon on Sunday 5th October. Over £4,000 will go to St Peter’s Church in Pitton to support their valuable work and the PCC are enormously grateful too. Remembrance Sunday Service and talk at St Mary's West Dean This year's Remembrance Sunday Service, at St Mary's Church West Dean, will be conducted by the Reverend Nils Bersweden and will include a short talk by Major General Patrick Cordingley. The talk will be on 'The Moving Story of Remembrance'. The Service will start at 10.45 on the morning of Sunday 9th November. All are welcome and the collection will be donated as usual to the British Legion. We do hope that you will come and join us in this Service of Remembrance. HOSTing International Students HOST is looking for kind, friendly, hospitable people of all ages whose imaginations are caught by the idea of welcoming an international student at university here, far from his or her own family, to their home, for a day, a weekend or at Christmas. You don’t need to live near a university, as students will travel for the privilege of meeting you, learning about real life in this country, and sharing their own culture. HOST is a voluntary activity which makes ambassadors for international goodwill of us all. Please see www.hostuk.org or call regional organiser Frances Good at 01934 712606.
