Little River National Wildlife Refuge Swamp/Marsh Site McCurtain County Location. This reference wetland is a portion of the Little River stream system. It is located on the east side of the Little River National Wildlife Refuge. Latitude: 33° 57' 44". Longitude: 94° 37' 36". Legal: Sec 7 T7S R26E. General Description. This reference site represents wetlands that border the Little River stream system in McCurtain County. This wetland landform is characterized by long and narrow depressions in broad flood plains and whose origin can be traced to abandoned stream channels. Surface water accumulation is from out-of-bank flooding and/or runoff from adjacent areas. Sediment loading is limited to large flood events. Groundwater tables are 1 to 3 feet above the surface during the winter and early spring. These wetlands range in size from 2 to 80 acres. Vegetative Community. Vegetation is dominated by an overstory of bald cypress. Understory vegetation is limited to the margins of the ponded water and consists of Hercules club, blue beech and buttonbush. In the ponded water, the sites are dominated by stinkweed and bladderworts. When disturbed by 66 drainage or filling, these sites convert to water primrose, smartweed, frog fruit and lizard’s tail. Tree trunks are buttressed and root systems are fluted. Hydrology. The water in these wetlands are provided by frequent floods of long duration and/or groundwater. Water tables range in depth from one to three feet above the surface the with the highest levels occurring during the winter through early summer. Subsurface water typically moves through out the soil profile. -

Four Western Cheilanthoid Ferns in Oklahoma
Oklahoma Native Plant Record 65 Volume 10, December 2010 FOUR WESTERN CHEILANTHOID FERNS IN OKLAHOMA Bruce A. Smith McLoud High School McLoud, Oklahoma 74851 Keywords: arid, distribution, habitat, key ABSTRACT The diversity of ferns in some of the more arid climates of western Oklahoma is surprising. This article examines four Oklahoma cheilanthoid ferns: Astrolepis integerrima, Cheilanthes wootonii, Notholaena standleyi, and Pellaea wrightiana. With the exceptions of A. integerrima and P. wrightiana which occur in Alabama and North Carolina respectively, all four species reach their eastern limits of distribution in Oklahoma. Included in this article are common names, synonyms, brief descriptions, distinguishing characteristics, U.S. and Oklahoma distribution, habitat information, state abundance, and a dichotomous key to selected cheilanthoids. The Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory has determined that all but one (N. standleyi) are species of concern in the state. Overview of Water and Related Resources Part 2 Natural Resource & Socioeconomic Characteristics n almost endless array of environmental and socioeconomic characteristics -- including climate, geography, geology, minerals, soils, agriculture, wildlife, recreation, archeology, commerce population and employment -- which affect the current and future availability and use of Oklahomas surface and groundwater supplies. A CLIMATE Climate, along with geography, has a profound influence on water resources and hydrologic characteristics in Oklahoma, which lies across two divergent climatic regions. The states relatively long distance from the moderating effect of the oceans and an absence of mountains to the north often allows cold arctic winds to reach Oklahoma during the winter, which is normally short and mild. In the spring, large thunderstorms develop when warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico converges with colder northern, humid eastern and dry western air masses, often producing tornadoes and large hail. Summers in Oklahoma are usually long and hot, punctuated by droughts of varying degree and duration. Fall, though often wet, normally features mild days and cool nights. May ranks as the wettest month while January is the driest. Annual rainfall (Figure 7) varies from more than 50 inches in the relatively warm and humid pine forests of the Ouachita Mountains in southeast Oklahoma to approximately 16 inches in the high plains of the western Panhandle where warm days and cool nights predomi- nate. The state-averaged precipitation is 33.5 inches. The temperatures in Oklahoma (Figure 8) vary from approximately 54 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit from west to east with a state average of 60.5 degrees. -

Evidence of a Late Jurassic Ridge Subduction Event: Geochemistry and Age of the Quartz Mountain Stock, Manastash Inlier, Central Cascades, Washington
Evidence of a Late Jurassic Ridge Subduction Event: Geochemistry and Age of the Quartz Mountain Stock, Manastash Inlier, Central Cascades, Washington James H. MacDonald Jr.1,* and Adam Schoonmaker2 1. Marine and Ecological Sciences, Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, Florida 33965, USA; 2. Geology Department, Utica College, Utica, New York 13502, USA ABSTRACT Previous studies of rocks in California and Oregon suggest that a Late Jurassic ridge subduction event occurred. The geology of the Manastash inlier in Washington State supports this Late Jurassic ridge subduction. The biotite horn- blende granodiorite and biotite hornblende tonalite of the Quartz Mountain stock and its cupolas are located in the Manastash inlier, central Cascades, Washington. This stock and its cupolas intrude the low-PT metamorphosed Look- out Mountain Formation turbidites—which are interpreted to have formed in a forearc depositional setting—and the suprasubduction zone Hereford Meadow amphibolite. A new single-crystal sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe– reverse geometry U-Pb age from stock zircons has an age of 157.4 5 1.2 Ma (2j). This new age corroborates the published age from the stock and is interpreted to be the crystallization age of the stock. New whole-rock major- and trace-element geochemistry suggests that the granitoids from this stock were generated by shallow mantle melting in a subduction zone setting. Geochemistry also suggests that the stock assimilated minor amounts of its wall rock and that the cupolas were generated from the same magmatic source as the main phase of the stock. The intrusion of the Quartz Mountain stock into the low-PT turbidites of the Lookout Mountain Formation and the suprasubduction zone Hereford Meadow amphibolite suggest that the magmas were generated by the subduction of a Late Jurassic spread- ing ridge.
