The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Scholarship Information Scholarship Name Scholarship Description A. Izard Josey Scholarship Aid Fund This fund was established in 1962 to provide scholarship aid to medical students. Adolph Meyer Scholarship This fund was established by a former student of Hopkins faculty member and psychiatrist, Adolf Meyer. Alberta Speaks Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1986 by a bequest from Alberta Speaks of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Miss Speaks was employed as a cook and saved diligently over her lifetime, leaving her savings to Johns Hopkins University. Preference for award of this scholarship is given to African-American students. Alden H. & Mary K. Burkholder Scholarship in Medical John A. Burkholder, Med '66, and his wife, Martha Education Burkholder, established this scholarship in 1996 in honor of his parents. He is a retired thoracic surgeon living in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Burkholder’s brother, Paul K. Burkholder, is a member of the Medical School Class of 1959. Paul is trained in internal medicine and resides in Rockford, IL. Alumni Class Scholarship Fund This scholarship is supported by various alumni classes. Dr. Bill Jarrett, Med '58, serves as the senior class representative for the School of Medicine. American Medical Association Scholarship Fund This fund will provide scholarship awards for medical students based on financial need and academic excellence. Arnold S. Broudy, M.D., & Regina H. Broudy Scholarship Established in 2001 by Arnold S. Broudy, Med 1971, and Fund his wife Regina Broudy, reflecting their devotion to medical excellence and lifelong affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Broudy is a past chief of the division of orthopedics, past president of the medical staff, and a former member of the board of directors of Forbes Health System. He is a past president of the medical staff for the Greater Pittsburgh Rehabilitation Hospital, and a member of both the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. Art Buchwald Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1989 in honor of the Centennial of Johns Hopkins Medicine by Mr. Buchwald, a well-known satirist. A Centennial dinner speaker, he returned his speaking fee to Hopkins to create the scholarship. Page 1 of 38 The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Scholarship Information Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Barnett Berman, M.D. Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1999 by an anonymous donor to honor Dr. Berman’s service and leadership to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Berman has long been associated with the Johns Hopkins Institutions, initially as a fellow in neurophysiology research and later as part-time staff physician in the Hospital and medical school. Dr. Berman served as preceptor in clinical skills for over 40 years. Barry S. Strauch, M.D., and Evelyn M. Strauch Barry S. Strauch, A&S ’62, Med ’65, and his wife, Evelyn Scholarship Fund M. Strauch, established this fund in 2001 to commemorate his 35th class reunion. Their gift reflects the couple’s devotion to medical excellence and their lifelong affiliation with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Strauch serves on the National Council for Johns Hopkins Medicine. He also serves as a management consultant to Washington Nephrology Associates; is a clinical professor of Medicine at Georgetown Medical School; and serves on the Board of Directors of Vapotherm, Inc. and International Medical Publishing, Inc. Dr. Strauch recently joined the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Visitors. Bernard and Anna Cline Student Aid Fund This scholarship was established in 1995 by the estate of Elbert F. Eibling Bernard S. French Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1974 by the estate of Sallye Lipscomb French of Washington, D.C., in memory of her husband, Bernard French, Med '23. Bernice & Joseph Fuld Memorial Scholarship Fund Stuart L. Fuld, Med ‘63, and his wife, Ulrike L. Fuld, established this scholarship in 1998 in memory of his parents and in honor of his 35th reunion. Dr. Fuld, who recently retired, was an attending radiologist at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick, Massachusetts. Bissell Robbins Memorial Scholarship Fund Charlotte L. R. Stodden, Med ‘50, established this fund in 1996 in memory of her mother. Dr. Stodden did her post- doctoral internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center from 1950 - 1951. She spent her career in the pharmaceutical industry, retiring as a director of Merck & Company. Blanche Lee Memorial Scholarship This fund was established in 1997 by family and friends in memory of Blanche Lee. Ms. Pamela L. Lee is the fund representative. Centennial Scholarship Fund Jeff Altman, a stand-up comic who resides in California, provided the seed money for this scholarship when he donated the proceeds of a performance at Johns Hopkins back to the institution. Charles L. & Doris Y. Hartsock Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1961 in memory of Dr. Hartsock, Med '20, by family and friends. Page 2 of 38 The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Scholarship Information Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Charles Marion Wolfe Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1997 through the estate of Doris L. Wolfe of Orlando, Florida, in memory of her husband. Charles R. Austrian Fund for Medical Education This scholarship was established in 1956 by friends and colleagues in memory of Dr. Austrian, A&S ’04, Med ’09. Dr. Austrian, a native of Baltimore, became interested in pulmonary tuberculosis and other diseases of the chest early in his career. A member of the Hopkins medical faculty, he served for many years in the Phipps tuberculosis clinic. Dr. Austrian, who also was physician- in-chief of Sinai Hospital, was recognized as a superb clinician and was well known for his work in infectious diseases. His son, Robert Austrian, A&S ’37, Med ’41, served as a University trustee from 1963 to 1969. Both he and his sister, Mrs. Burton R. Fisher, continue to support the scholarship annually. Clark Foundation Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1983 by the Clark Foundation of New York City. Class of 1915 Memorial Fund This scholarship was established by gifts and bequests from, and as a tribute to, the class. Class of 1926 & Charles O'Donovan Scholarship Fund Members of the Class of 1926 established this scholarship in 1950 to honor Dr. O’Donovan, Med ’25, a pediatrician and member of the Hopkins faculty from 1946 to his death in 1964. His father, two sons (Charles O'Donovan III and J. Crossan O'Donovan) and a daughter (Eleanora O'Donovan Yaggy) graduated from Hopkins. Class of 1937 Philip Bard Scholarship Members of the Class of 1937 established this scholarship in 1987 in honor of their 50th reunion and in memory of Dr. Bard. Dr. Bard served as director of Physiology and dean of the School of Medicine from 1953 to 1957. Dr. Donald F. Proctor serves as class representative. Class of 1956 Memorial Scholarship Fund Members of the Class of 1956 established this scholarship in 1971. The scholarship continues to be supported by their annual gifts. Dr. Franklin T. Hoaglund serves as class representative. Class of 1960 Scholarship Fund William D. Kerr, Jr., Med ‘60, of Winnetka, Illinois, and other members of the Class of 1960, established this scholarship in 1998. Dr. Kerr is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Council. Dr. George M. Callard serves as class representative. Class of 1964 Physician of Letters Merit Scholarship Members of the Class of 1964 established this scholarship in 1991 to provide merit scholarship support. Vaughan A. Johnson, A&S '59 (M.A.), Med '64, of Danville, California, serves as class representative. He is a retired general surgeon, avid tennis player, and drummer. Barry S. Strauch, A&S ’62, Med ’65, of McLean, Virginia, serves as class representative. Class of 1966 Scholarship Fund Members of the Class of 1966 established this scholarship in 1989 in honor of their 25th reunion. Dr. John A. Burkholder serves as class representative. Class of 1976 Endowed Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2001 by members of the class in honor of their 25th reunion. Arnold D. Gale, Med 1976 (class representative), who served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pediatrics and as a member of the Hospital staff in the Department of Neurology, and Raymond S. Martin III, Med 1976, served as co-chairs of their 25th reunion. Class of 1978 Endowed Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2003 by members of the class in honor of their 25th reunion. Walter H. Ettinger, Med 1978, who served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Departments of Rheumatology and Geriatrics and as a member of the faculty in the Department of Medicine, and Richard S. D’Agostino, Med 1978 (class representative) served as class co-chairs. Class of 1980 Scholarship Fund John T. Thompson, A&S ’77, Med ’80, and other members of the Class of 1980, established this scholarship in 1994 in honor of their 15th class reunion. Dr. Thompson serves as class representative. Class of 1983 Scholarship Fund Reunion class co-chairs, Randall S. Moore, Med ’83, of Long Grove, Illinois, and John G. Heller, Med ’83, of Atlanta, Georgia, established the Class of 1983 Scholarship in 1999 along with members of the class in honor of their 15th reunion. Dr. Heller serves as class representative. Mrs. Vassilia B. Agoris is parent of Peter Agoris, a deceased member of the Class of 1983. Class of 1986 Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2000 by members of the class in honor of their 15th reunion.
