OREGON LOGGING CONFERENCE Student Competition What: High School Logging Skills Competition Where: Outside Area North of Expo Hall When: Saturday, February 25 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday morning, Warrenton Fiber- Nygaard Logging will sponsor the High School Skills Competition, providing an op- portunity for the next generation of loggers to go show their stuff. Outside the Expo Hall, you will find more than 75 high school students from across the state competing head-to-head in a variety of forestry events, including: • Cable splicing • Crosscut • Single buck • Log scaling • Compass and pacing • Tool identification climbing Once again, there will be an arboriculture climbing event. In this exciting competition, both male and female competitors race up a tree to a designated finish line. To ensure the safety of climbers and the health of the trees, current techniques are used. Events like these help students learn forestry skills as well as stay connected to school. Jay carves Bigfoot, fish, bears, birds, bees, and other animals out of local cedar on the McKenzie River in southern Oregon. His chainsaw carvings can be seen along the McKenzie, at the McKenzie Feed & Pet Supply (on Main St. in Springfield), and annually at the Chainsaw Art Festival up in Blue River. You may also have seen Jay’s Bigfoot and bear featured at the Blue Sky Market or his giant bee at the McKenzie Lavender farm. Ryan Anderson Ryan started his chainsaw carving career in June of 2005 after being apprenticed by Tracie Brittenfeld of Packwood, Washington. Since that time, Ryan has been competing and receiving awards throughout the country. He has also participated in international competitions. While representing America in Europe at the Beer, Wine, and Music English Open, Ryan took both second and third place, and he has traveled to competitions in Scotland and Canada. Each stack must remain standing for five seconds after the heeling rack contacts the Stop/ Stop/Start point, signaling comple- tion of the event run. All three stacks must remain standing for the full five seconds or the competitor will be disqualified.
