Even those familiar with magnolias tend to think of them as occurring only in the South, where a more moderate climate prevails. Seven species do indeed thrive, especially in the southern Appalachian Mountains. But how many Hoosiers know that there are two native species Figure 2. Banana Shrub Scientific Name: Michelia Figo Order
Common Name: Banana Shrub Scientific Name: Michelia figo Order: Magnoliales Family: Magnoliaceae Description The Banana Shrub’s evergreen leaves are simple and develop in an alternate pattern. The leaves’ shapes are narrowly oval or slightly obovate. They are 1½ to 4 inches long and have a width of ½ to 2 inches. In the younger stages the leaves are covered with brownish pubescence. At the mature stage, the leaves are lustrous and rich, dark green with an entire leaf margin. It has a ½ inch long, brown pubescent petiole. The Banana Shrub’s flowers are large and ovoid, ranging from ½ to 1 inch long when mature. They are 6 to 9 tepaled, cup-shaped flowers and are extremely fragrant. They are covered with greenish to silky brown hairs and diverge from a rusty brown peduncular stalk at approximately a 30 degree angle. In the vegetative stage, the flowers 1 are not as plump, /8 to ¼ inch long, and are covered with dark brown, rusty pubescence. The flowers bloom in April through June. Growth Habit 1 1 At a very early stage, the stem of the banana shrub is /16 to /8 inch in diameter covered in short rusty brown pubescence. As the plant matures the stem gets much larger but keeps its gray- brown color. The plant is tends to be a slow grower with a rounded, open habit. It can grow to be 10 to 15 feet tall if it is left unpruned. Hardiness Zone(s) Banana shrub can grow in zones 7 to 10, though Zone 8 is the best because of the warmer temperatures. -

College, Dibrugarh - 786 001 (Assam), India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Changes in botanical names of flowering plants are an issue which comes up from time to time. While there are valid scientific reasons for such changes, it also creates some difficulties to the floristic workers in the preparation of a new flora. Further, all the important monumental floras of the world have most of the plants included in their old names, which are now regarded as synonyms. In north east India, “Flora of Assam” is an important flora as it includes result of pioneering floristic work on Angiosperms & Gymnosperms in the region. But, in the study of this flora, the same problems of name changes appear before the new researchers. Therefore, an attempt is made here to prepare an updated account of the new names against their old counterpts of the plants included in the first two volumes of the flora, on the basis of recent standard taxonomic literatures. In this, the unresolved & controversial names are not touched & only the confirmed ones are taken into account. In the process new names of 470 (four hundred & seventy) dicotyledonous plant species included in the concerned flora are found out. Although the skies cleared for our sec- ond day, the flora was depauperate as we headed west of Kunming, toward Dali, on the main highway connecting the two towns. We made our first stop in a small cemetery one hour west of Kunming at 6, sooft (tgggm) elevation. The purpose of this stop was to exam- ine a large tree of the rare Crtlocedrus rnacrdlepis. Obviously, this could be due to the stressed environmental conditions un- der which it was growing. I looked the plant over for seed, but it wasn't until I got on my knees did I find six old seeds on the ground underneath the plants. -
