Supersaurus Classification: Sauropoda Diplosauridae Size: Length approx.24 to 42m Weight approx.30 to 50t Period: Late Period

The name Supersaurus means 'super lizard' and the belongs to four-legged, plant-eating (Sauropoda) group of that have lizard-like skeletons (). Supersaurus was discovered when a huge shoulder blade, measuring over 2 metres in height, was found in the in the U.S. state of Colorado. Until 1979, giant , believed to be from the same , continued to be found. Then, in 1985, Dr. Jim Jensen, realizing that it was a dinosaur much bigger than even the and , at that time thought to have been the largest dinosaurs, named it 'Supersaurus'. It had a very long neck and a snake-like tail that it is believed to have used like a whip to protect itself.

Dinosaurs lived about 225 million years ago, in the Mesozoic era, which is made up of the , Jurassic and periods. It is thought likely that the dinosaurs were wiped out around 65 million years ago, when many plants and died as a result of climatic changes brought about by a meteor striking the earth, but no one knows what really happened.
