  • Whatsapp, Doc? Marketing with Messaging Apps Whatsapp, Doc?
05–06 Tools TCAT 07–08 Campaigns Shazam, Foo Fighters, Childish Gambino, Shakira 09-13 Behind The Campaign Bon Iver MAY 24 2017 sandboxMUSIC MARKETING FOR THE DIGITAL ERA ISSUE 180 WHATSAPP, DOC? MARKETING WITH MESSAGING APPS WHATSAPP, DOC? n just eight years, WhatsApp has become one of the most important I means of communication in the modern world – a platform with more than 1bn monthly active users and growing. Normally, this would mean a rush for the music industry to get involved and use the platform to promote its artists – as we have seen so many times before, with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. But with WhatsApp things have been different. It may be that WhatsApp is simply too fiddly to use on a large scale or that parent company Facebook has shown little interest in driving the music industry towards WhatsApp. Whatever the case, WhatsApp rarely shows up in music marketing plans, which seems strange for an app we almost all carry around marketing with messaging apps in our pockets. But is the music industry missing a trick? Or is WhatsApp more trouble WhatsApp has more than 1bn active users – many in the millennial bracket. Because this audience than it is worth? Inspired by Ninja Tunes is increasingly hard to reach through other channels, it remains bewildering why the music act Forest Swords’ recent WhatsApp promotion, sandbox decided to look at industry is not doing more marketing here. Sure, there are complications – such as a limit on the four examples of marketing on WhatsApp number of users in a group and no way of automating messages – but it remains a huge opportunity – three for music and one from the wider for those prepared to roll up their sleeves.

  • Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century
A SCENE WITHOUT A NAME: INDIE CLASSICAL AND AMERICAN NEW MUSIC IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY William Robin A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Mark Katz Andrea Bohlman Mark Evan Bonds Tim Carter Benjamin Piekut © 2016 William Robin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT WILLIAM ROBIN: A Scene Without a Name: Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation represents the first study of indie classical, a significant subset of new music in the twenty-first century United States. The definition of “indie classical” has been a point of controversy among musicians: I thus examine the phrase in its multiplicity, providing a framework to understand its many meanings and practices. Indie classical offers a lens through which to study the social: the web of relations through which new music is structured, comprised in a heterogeneous array of actors, from composers and performers to journalists and publicists to blog posts and music venues. This study reveals the mechanisms through which a musical movement establishes itself in American cultural life; demonstrates how intermediaries such as performers, administrators, critics, and publicists fundamentally shape artistic discourses; and offers a model for analyzing institutional identity and understanding the essential role of institutions in new music. Three chapters each consider indie classical through a different set of practices: as a young generation of musicians that constructed itself in shared institutional backgrounds and performative acts of grouping; as an identity for New Amsterdam Records that powerfully shaped the record label’s music and its dissemination; and as a collaboration between the ensemble yMusic and Duke University that sheds light on the twenty-first century status of the new-music ensemble and the composition PhD program.

  • Bon Iver & TU Dance
For Immediate Release 13 December 2017 Contact: Jodi Joseph Director of Communications 413.664.4481 x8113 [email protected] Bon Iver & TU Dance “Endlessly ecstatic and three-dimensional” — NPR NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — Repeat Grammy Award-winner and endlessly influential balladeer Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, visits MASS MoCA to perform a work-in-progress score alongside dance company TU Dance. The company’s co- founder and “incredible polyrhythmic genius” (Star Tribune), Uri Sands, guides his troupe through movement that lilts and tumbles alongside Vernon’s expansive sound. The new work will officially premiere with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music Series on April 19 in Saint Paul, MN, but you can see it first in North Adams on Saturday, March 24, at 8pm, and Sunday, March 25, at 2pm. Since Bon Iver’s debut album For Emma, Forever Ago was released in July 2007, Justin Vernon has captured the hearts of critics and fans alike. Isolating himself in northwestern Wisconsin during the writing and recording process, his aching folk tunes featured natural imagery and contemplative verses with a dynamic and experimental edge. Vernon wrote all the lyrics, played all the instruments, and recorded each track, heavily edited with a large number of overdubs in a style now associated with the band. In 2012, the band received four Grammy nominations, winning for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for sophomore effort Bon Iver, Bon Iver, which was also named Pitchfork’s number one album of 2011. The album marked a shift from a solitary project into something that felt more like the work of a group.

  • Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Jon Hopkins, Aoife Mcardle, Cillian Murphy, Max Porter Present All of This Unreal Time at MIF 21
PRESS RELEASE Embargoed until 11am, WEDNESDAY 28 APRIL 2021 Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Jon Hopkins, Aoife McArdle, Cillian Murphy, Max Porter Present All of This Unreal Time at MIF 21 Six critically acclaimed artists have come together in a new collaborative partnership to present the world premiere of All of This Unreal Time, a unique cross artform collaboration which candidly explores one man’s failings. ‘I came out here to apologise. You know. I find myself, at the midpoint of my life, in a dark wood, and now I’m here, in the forest of my mind, and every tree is shame, every living thing is a reprimand, and I realise, I must speak freely now, before I lose you.’ A man – any man, everyman – walks alone through night and the city. From subway to pavement to wide open marshland, he confesses his failings: emotional, physical, political. To whom, and for what? Ashamed and alarmed, he considers both the smallness of human life and the scale of the world, and ultimately our most pressing obligation: to care for those alongside us, and for the earth that sustains us. A film starring Cillian Murphy, written by Max Porter, directed by Aoife McArdle and with music by Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner and Jon Hopkins, All of This Unreal Time will be presented as an immersive installation in surround sound. Aoife McArdle said: “It was easy to be inspired by the range and power Cillian has as an actor and the poetry of Max’s words. Rainy, empty, lockdown streets became vivid canvases.
