United States Department of Agriculture Umpqua National Forest Burned Area Emergency Response Summary – Thielsen Fire October 22, 2020 The Thielsen Fire was detected on September 8, 2020 at approximately 8:30 a.m. after lightning passed through the area. The fire was on the Diamond Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest, approximately 5 miles north of Crater Lake National Park. It burned within one mile of the Diamond Lake Resort, along both sides of Oregon Highway 138, and a small portion of the Mount Thielsen Wilderness. The fire (as of 10/6/2020) encompassed 9,951 acres primarily in a mixed conifer forest. The fire burned a mosaic pattern through most of the area, and the majority burned with low and moderate severity. The Forest Service assembled a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team on September 26, 2020. This team of experts in soils, geology, hydrology, engineering, botany, recreation, archaeology, wildlife, fisheries, and GIS, began assessing the post-fire effects to critical values on Forest Service lands. BAER critical values include Life and Safety, Natural Resource, Cultural Resources and Property. The team developed a Soil Burn Severity (SBS) map to document the degree to which soil properties had changed within the burned area. Fire damaged soils have low strength, high root mortality, and increased rates of water runoff and erosion. Using the SBS map, BAER team members ran models to estimate changes in soil erosion, stream flows (hydrology) and debris flow (geology) potential. The models compared pre-fire conditions to predicted post- fire conditions to determine relative changes, which are then used to determine the relative risk to different critical values and recommendations to address those things determined to be an emergency. -

Peak on skyline is 8,929 feet (2,722 meters) Mount Scott, an ~420 thousand years before present (ka) dacite stratovolcano considered to be part of Mount Mazama, the volcano that collapsed during the caldera-forming eruption ~7,700 years ago. The caldera walls in this view expose Mazama lava flows and fragmental deposits from as old as ~400 ka at Phantom Cone, adjacent to tiny Phantom Ship island, to as young as ~27 ka at Redcloud Cliff, the V-shaped face at the top of the wall left of center. The beheaded glacial valley of Kerr Notch, the low point on the caldera rim, is seen between Phantom Ship and Mount Scott. Photograph by Carly McLanahan. Cover (bottom photo): Newberry Volcano, Oregon, is the largest volcano in the Cascades volcanic arc. This north-facing view taken from the volcano’s peak, Paulina Peak (elevation 7,984 feet), encompasses much of the volcano’s 4-by-5-milewide central caldera, a volcanic depression formed in a powerful explosive eruption about 75,000 years ago. The caldera’s two lakes, Paulina Lake (left) and the slightly higher East Lake (right), are fed in part by active hot springs heated by molten rock (magma) deep beneath the caldera. The Central Pumice Cone sits between the lakes. -

Ross During the summer of 1981, Oregon State University archaeologically tested three prehistoric sites on the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge. Among the sites tested were typical Willamette Valley floodplain and adjacent upland sites. Most settlement-subsistence pattern models proposed for the Willamette Valley have been generated with data from the eastern valley floor, western Cascade Range foothills. The work at Wm. L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge provides one of the first opportunities to view similar settings along the western margins of the Willamette Valley. Bacon Pamphlet to accompany Scientific Investigations Map 2832 View from the south-southwest rim of Crater Lake caldera showing the caldera wall from Hillman Peak on the west to Cleetwood Cove on the north. Crater Lake fills half of the 8- by 10-km-diameter caldera formed during the climactic eruption of Mount Mazama volcano approximately 7,700 years ago. Volcanic rocks exposed in the caldera walls and on the flanks record over 400,000 years of eruptive history. The exposed cinder cone and andesite lava flows on Wizard Island represent only 2 percent of the total volume of postcaldera volcanic rock that is largely covered by Crater Lake.
