Calculating your membership Ames Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development 2009 Annual Report As we enter another decade, it’s fun to look back to see how far we’ve come - not only as member organizations serving businesses in central Iowa, but as a whole community. The Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) continue to grow in membership numbers, certainly, but also in the reach of their programming and long-term investments. The Ames Chamber and AEDC continue to work together to promote a business climate conducive for growth, prosperity and a future we can be proud to leave to future generations. The 2009 accomplishments of the Ames Chamber and AEDC highlighted in the pages that follow are indicative of what’s ahead for Ames. While the economic outlook for our state and our nation continue to be cloudy, Ames continues to be a strong community for business. In fact, while the rest of the country battled increasing unemployment rates this year, Ames, Iowa was routinely listed in the top 5 cities in the country this past year on record. On top of this, while most Chambers fight to keep 80% of their members, in 2009 the Ames Chamber boasted a 93% retention rate and finished with another record membership total of 726. Most members of both the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the AEDC know intuitively that their investment in these orga- nizations is a worthy one, but when we see numbers like this - and accomplishments like those in this report - it’s a positive affirmation of what we’ve known deep down all along: Ames really is a community where we can live, work and thrive. We especially thank 2009 Board Chairs Cozette Hadley Rosburg (Ames Chamber) and Kevin Kinzler (AEDC) for their lead- ership to bring us to this point. On behalf of the Boards of Directors and staff for the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Economic Development Commission, we thank you for your continued investment and partnership. You make Ames such a great place to serve. In fact, Ames’ own Resource Recovery Plant was the first municipally operated “waste-to-energy” facility in the nation (1975). The plant converts burnable garbage into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) used by our power plant, allowing us to conserve fossil fuels, decrease sulfur dioxide emis- sions, save more than 80 acres of Iowa farmland (that would have been used as landfill), and power more than 4600 homes each year. With leadership from Mayor Ann Campbell and many others, the City of Ames has added an aresnal of green practices to replace and/or improve current infrastructure and sys- tems in place. From a fleet of hybrid vehicles and the new Gold Leaf “Cybrid” buses, to the “Smart Energy” program and environmentally-friendly practices used to construct and operate the new Furman Aquatic Center, Ames is ensuring a healthy community for future development, environment and generations to come. The Ames Chamber of Commerce has begun to work with the City of Ames and Iowa State University to develop more “green initiatives” to implement across our region while proving that implementing environmentally-friendly practices does not come at a cost of sacrificing a competitive business edge. Companies are rec- ognizing the significant impact a few changes to our corporate culture can make, especially when the benefits are so far-reaching.
