Ames Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development 2009 Annual Report

As we enter another decade, it’s fun to look back to see how far we’ve come - not only as member organizations serving businesses in central , but as a whole community. The Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) continue to grow in membership numbers, certainly, but also in the reach of their programming and long-term investments. The Ames Chamber and AEDC continue to work together to promote a business climate conducive for growth, prosperity and a future we can be proud to leave to future generations. The 2009 accomplishments of the Ames Chamber and AEDC highlighted in the pages that follow are indicative of what’s ahead for Ames. While the economic outlook for our state and our nation continue to be cloudy, Ames continues to be a strong community for business. In fact, while the rest of the country battled increasing unemployment rates this year, Ames, Iowa was routinely listed in the top 5 cities in the country this past year on record. On top of this, while most Chambers fight to keep 80% of their members, in 2009 the Ames Chamber boasted a 93% retention rate and finished with another record membership total of 726. Most members of both the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the AEDC know intuitively that their investment in these orga- nizations is a worthy one, but when we see numbers like this - and accomplishments like those in this report - it’s a positive affirmation of what we’ve known deep down all along: Ames really is a community where we can live, work and thrive. We especially thank 2009 Board Chairs Cozette Hadley Rosburg (Ames Chamber) and Kevin Kinzler (AEDC) for their lead- ership to bring us to this point. On behalf of the Boards of Directors and staff for the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Economic Development Commission, we thank you for your continued investment and partnership. You make Ames such a great place to serve. Maureen Dockstader Tom Pohlman LWBJ Financial, LLP Ames National Corporation 2010 Ames Chamber of Commerce Board Chair 2010 AEDC Board Chair

In fact, Ames’ own Resource Recovery Plant was the first municipally operated “waste-to-energy” facility in the nation (1975). The plant converts burnable garbage into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) used by our power plant, allowing us to conserve fossil fuels, decrease sulfur dioxide emis- sions, save more than 80 acres of Iowa farmland (that would have been used as landfill), and power more than 4600 homes each year.

With leadership from Mayor Ann Campbell and many others, the City of Ames has added an aresnal of green practices to replace and/or improve current infrastructure and sys- tems in place. From a fleet of hybrid vehicles and the new Gold Leaf “Cybrid” buses, to the “Smart Energy” program and environmentally-friendly practices used to construct and operate the new Furman Aquatic Center, Ames is ensuring a healthy community for future development, environment and generations to come.

The Ames Chamber of Commerce has begun to work with the City of Ames and Iowa State University to develop more “green initiatives” to implement across our region while proving that implementing environmentally-friendly practices does not come at a cost of sacrificing a competitive business edge. Companies are rec- ognizing the significant impact a few changes to our corporate culture can make, especially when the benefits are so far-reaching.

7 The Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) organizes and promotes sound economic growth in Ames and central Iowa by stimulating the expansion of existing industry, attracting new enterprises and assuring a favorable community climate for new ideas and economic growth. The AEDC is made up of nearly 100 investor partners representing indus- try, education, and government.

AMES / DES MOINES CORRIDOR The Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) and the Greater Des Moines Partnership (Partnership) collaborated in 2008 to bring the Partnership together with Boone and Story coun- ties to enhance the external marketing efforts of the Ames/Des Moines corridor.

The economic development professionals rep- resented in the collaboration met frequently in 2009 to discuss the marketing efforts of this territory. They recently raised operating funds through multi-year capital campaigns, which were matched by a contribution from the Iowa Department of Economic Development. These re- gional efforts have proved a positive transition from the individual efforts put forth by each com- munity. They collectively work to promote Central Iowa as one of the nation’s top location for biosci- ences and information technology, and increase prospect activity for the counties of Boone, Dallas, Polk, Story and Warren. The Corridor is also re- sponsible for promoting the research capabilities of area colleges and universities in order to at- tract R & D operations, increase collaboration with educational partners, and enhance efforts to attract talent to the region. Coupled with this, the group attended key recruitment events includ- ing national and international Sell Iowa trips, BIO and World Congress on Industrial Bioprocessing, Renewable on Parade and Supply Side. www.amesdesmoinescorridor.com

Not many will have the impact on the business community like Dan Krieger. In 2009 Dan retired after a 50+ year career in the banking industry in Ames. Due in large part to his leadership, First National Bank has seen growth of nearly 75-fold during Dan’s tenure in which he also oversaw operations of the five banks in the corporation.

Dan is a strong leader in the community and a role model to others. His leadership positions outside of the bank include seats on the boards of the Ames Chamber of Commerce, Ames Economic Development Commission, Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau, Ames Seed Capital, Ames Rotary, United Way of Story County, Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation and ISU Alumni Association. Professionally, Dan has also served the banking industry on state and national levels as the chairs of both the Iowa Bankers Association and the Community Bankers Council for the American Bankers Association, and committee seats on the American Bankers Association and ABA Government Relations Council. In 2008 Dan was honored by the Iowa Bankers Association with the James H. Leach Leadership Award in recognition for his outstanding service to the financial services industry. While Dan has been a past recipient of the Ames Chamber Business Person of the Year Award (1997), his service to his industry and his community is deserving of recognition like this again. ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR: JOHN CRAWFORD, Alpha Copies & Print Center Each year the Ames Chamber of Commerce recognizes an individual for his or her creativity and personal initiative in operating a successful business venture. A long time resident of Ames, and a fervent supporter of Campustown, John Crawford found another way to serve the needs of both the business and Iowa State community when he opened Alpha Copies & Print Center right across from the Memorial Union. Since his opening in 2005, John has grown his staff, services, product lines, hours of operation and, certainly, clientele. John is always open to new ideas and customer suggestions, and the Alpha Copies staff enjoys their working environment and, because of John’s example, providing exceptional customer service.

John has always gone the extra mile to serve his customers. In addition to donating extensive amounts of printing services to churches and other ministries, he also offers special pricing for couples getting married. Besides discounting invitations and programs, because of John’s personal belief in the sanctity and importance of marriage, he offers a refund of $100 to couples who stay married for two years.

John also enjoys the opportunity to support other needs and causes in the community and around the world. He has been an active participant in Campustown Action Association, has served on the board for the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, and in 2009 elected to the Ames Economic Development Commission Board of Directors. John has been a generous supporter of Leadership Ames community service projects and a great “cheerleader’’ for Ames High School, most recently sponsoring the Ames High Basketball Game at in December. John takes an active approach to helping those in need whether it’s sending supplies and food with teams helping with the recovery efforts after the Parkersburg tornado, raising awareness for Breast Cancer research, or donating profits to Haiti relief. John Russell has a strong history of commitment to the community both personally and professionally. In 2009 John ended a 3-year responsibility with the United Way of Story County (UWSC) Annual Campaign, most recently serving as Campaign Chair. This year’s campaign results reflect the respect he commands in the community as he was able to raise in tough economic times a record campaign total of more than $1.6 million ($50,000 over the goal). His UWSC involvement has also included serving as the Major Firms Campaign Chair, as well as sitting on the Board of Directors and Committees for Communications, Nominating and Endowment.

Along with his service to United Way, John has supported local business by serving on the Ames Chamber Board (President in ‘02), Ames Seed Capital, and the Ames Economic Development Commission (Chair in ‘07). His community involvement resume also includes Junior Achievement, Iowa Bankers Association, Ames Soccer Club, St. Andrews Lutheran Church and Ames Noon Rotary.
