Mission Sagar-III drishtiias.com/printpdf/mission-sagar-iii Why in News Recently, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kiltan has arrived at Sihanoukville Port, Cambodia as part of ongoing Mission Sagar-III. Key Points The ship will deliver 15 tons of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) stores for the flood-affected people of Cambodia, which will be handed over to Cambodia’s National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC). Earlier, the ship delivered 15 Tons of HADR Stores for the flood-affected people of Central Vietnam. Mission Sagar-III is part of India’s HADR assistance to friendly foreign countries during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In November 2020, as part of Mission Sagar-II , INS Airavat delivered food aid to Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti and Eritrea. Launched in May 2020, 'Mission Sagar’ was India’s initiative to deliver Covid- 19 related assistance to the countries in the Indian Ocean Littoral states. The countries included were Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles. This Mission is being undertaken in accordance with the Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision and reiterates India’s position as a dependable partner, and the Indian Navy as the Preferred Security Partner and First Responder. The Mission also highlights the importance accorded to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and further strengthens the existing bonds. Cambodia and Vietnam are member nations of the ASEAN. INS Kiltan It is a Kamorta-class anti-submarine warfare corvette. 1/2 It is part of the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command, based at Visakhapatnam. INS Kiltan, along with the INS Sahyadri, is the latest, indigenously designed and built multi-role ships of the Indian Navy. -

These missiles are capable of delivering conventional or nuclear payloads at speeds not imagined hitertoo over long ranges. By Sudhi Ranjan Sen The Defence Research and Development (DRDO) has started work to produce a hypersonic weapon – missiles that travel at five times speed of sound, or a little over a mile every second. A wind tunnel to test and fine tune the technology will be operational soon, senior government officials who did not want to be named said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to inaugurate the facility soon, they added. “A hypersonic weapon system is one of the many niche technologies we are exploring seriously,” one of the officials said, asking not to be named. Billed as a “next-gen” weapon system, the race to acquire hypersonic weapons technology is heating up. China, Russia, and the United States are testing hypersonic weapons of various types to enhance strategic nuclear deterrence and strengthen front-line combat units. Existing intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) re-entry vehicles also travel at those superfast speeds, but the hypersonic glide vehicles now in development are far more manoeuvrable, making their tracking and interception nearly impossible. -

1 CADET’S HAND BOOK (NAVY) SPECIALISED SUBJECT 2 Preface 1. National Cadet Corps (NCC), came into existence, on 15 July 1948 under an Act of Parliament. Over the years, NCC has spread its activities and values, across the length and breadth of the country; in schools and colleges, in almost all the districts of India. It has attracted millions of young boys and girls, to the very ethos espoused by its motto, “unity and discipline” and molded them into disciplined and responsible citizens of the country. Laboratory Pasadena, California Vol. 28, No. 18 September 4, 1998 Jet Propulsion Universe Aquarium test helps scientists look for life in extreme environments By MARY HARDIN NASA’s search for life elsewhere in the solar system has brought JPL space scientists to the giant kelp forest exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium to test a new scientific probe that is a precursor to one that might one day look for life in oceans that may exist on Jupiter’s icy moon Europa. JPL researchers have been conducting these first-time engineering tests at the California aquarium as a precursor to an experiment that will place a scientific probe in an underwater Hawaiian volcanic vent later this year. The Lo’ihi Underwater Volcanic Vent Mission Probe will investigate an undersea vol- cano located 27 kilometers (20 miles) east of the Big Island of Hawaii at a depth of about 1,300 meters (4,250 feet). “The purpose of using the Monterey Bay Aquarium kelp tank is to begin testing the instruments in an aquatic environment that con- tains some biological material that will stimu- late and test the hardware,” said JPL’s Dr. Lonne Lane, principal investigator for the experiment. “The information to be gathered from these experiments at the aquarium and later in Hawaii will prepare us for future mis- sions to difficult places like Antarctica’s Lake Vostok (under 4 kilometers [2.5 miles] of ice), and below the surface of Jupiter’s ice-encrust- ed moon Europa.” The use of the aquarium also provides a cost-effective, controlled environment for this first experiment.
