Evaluation support study on Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed protected in the EU ABSTRACT This study provides an evaluation on the EU quality policy on geographical indications (GIs) and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSGs) protected in the EU. This covers 3 286 names (3 224 GIs and 62 TSGs) originating from EU Member States and registered in the EU and 32 GIs registered through direct application by third countries. The objectives of GIs and TSGs are overall achieved. We observe a wide range of possible benefits of the schemes for stakeholders, even if they are not systematic. The main limits are the low awareness and understanding of the schemes by consumers in some Member States and some weaknesses of the controls at the downstream st ages of the value chain. The GIs/TSGs are assessed to be efficient. GIs and TSGs may provide several benefits and the costs for public bodies (at EU and national levels) are estimated at 0.12% of the total sales value under GI/TSG. The schemes are assessed to be relevant for both private stakeholders and public authorities. The considerations of GIs/TSGs for environmental sustainability and animal welfare are growing, they could be further developed. Considering coherence, no major incompatibility has been identified, regarding the GIs and EU trade marks, GIs/TSGs and national/regional schemes, GIs/TSGs and other EU policies. There is a clear EU added value for GIs and TSGs. RESUME Cette étude est une évaluation de la politique qualité de l’UE sur les indications géographiques (IG) et les spécialités traditionnelles garanties (STG) protégées au sein de l’UE. Cela couvre 3 286 noms (3 223 IG et 62 STG) enregistrés par des Etats Membres de l’UE et 32 IG enregistrées directement par des pays tiers. D’une manière générale, les objectifs des IG et STG sont remplis. On observe une grande diversité de bénéfices possibles des dispositifs pour les parties prenantes, ils ne sont cependant pas systématiques. Les principales limites sont la faible notoriété et compréhension des dispositifs par les consommateurs dans certains Etats Membres et des points faibles dans les contrôles à l’aval des filières. Les IG/STG sont considérées comme étant efficientes. Les IG et STG peuvent procurer différents bénéfices et les coûts pour les pouvoirs publics (au niveau de l’UE et au niveau national) sont estimés à 0.12% de la valeur totale des ventes sous IG/STG. Les dispositifs sont considérés comme étant pertinents pour les acteurs privés et les pouvoirs publics. Les considérations des IG et STG pour la durabilité environnementale et le bien-être animal augmentent, elles pourraient être plus fortement développées. En termes de cohérence, aucune incompatibilité majeure n’a été identifiée concernant les IG et les marques de l’UE, les IG/STG et les dispositifs nationaux/régionaux, les IG/STG et les autres politiques de l’UE. The Tokaj Wine Region Development Council was established in 2014 to lead the wine region’s Tokaj-Hegyalja National Program. The development concept in this priority program is aimed at promoting complex developments in the ecological balance of the Tokaj Wine Region, which are both natural, social, economic and cultural. The purpose of the paper is to present the region marketing idea in a world heritage wine region. This can be supported by primary and secondary research. The organization of the examined wine region development council and the key actors were asked. There was an inquiry at the wineries, 41 companies answered the questions. There are excellent specialists and the natural endowments are also suitable. The newly established Hungarian Tourism Office is the only hope that Community wine marketing can be really effective, and wineries can also experience its positive effect. There are 27 settlements in the wine region, there is a national park, and the tourism sector is only one that can be complementary to wine-making opportunities. Directions of development: winery, viticulture, infrared structure, tourism extension, culture, traditions, value preservation, hotel, attraction development, uniform appearance and coordination.

    ROYAL TOKAJI OVERVIEW TOKAJI’S ROYAL CONNECTION AND RENAISSANCE The first Tokaji aszú wine was created in the 1600s perhaps by accident — a harvest delayed by threat of enemy invasion. In 1700, Tokaj became the first European region to have its vineyards classified — its uniquely varied terroirs and climates rated “primae classis, secundae classis, tertius classis,” or “first growth, second growth, third growth,” by Prince Rakoczi II of Transylvania. This classification system is still used in Hungary today. Quality production ended with the Communist Party takeover of Hungarian winemaking. Aszú grapes were used for mass production in factories, with vineyard distinctions lost in giant tanks. Tokaj’s renaissance began after the collapse of communism with the establishment of Royal Tokaji in 1990 by well- known author Hugh Johnson and a small group of investors, who were inspired to restore and preserve Hungary’s precious wine legacy. THE TOKAJ REGION Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the grapes that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars. Grapes that are infected with botrytis are commonly referred to by the Hungarian term aszú. GRAPE VARIETIES By law, only white grape varieties are allowed to be planted in Tokaj.

Koppány Nádassy May 2020 Abstract Motivation Tokaj Wine Region was once the place of production of the noblest wines of the world, but became a marginal wine region by the 20th century. There are many factors, which made this region faded away, but its uniqueness, the steadfast work of winemakers and market trends enable a brighter future for this wine region that has once enjoyed great acclaim. The fall of the Iron Curtain and the changes in consumer habits motivated the winemakers and the region to repositioning the variety Furmint on the local market and also on the export markets as well. Objectives The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the alteration of the Tokaj Wine Region. This thesis aims to show this evolution in the context of the historical background, the overview of the viticulture and vinification and the market overview. At the end propose a possible product range, and cooperation which could make sense to wine-growers and producers to strenghten their market position. Methodology To accomplish this task I did research about the History of Tokaj Wine Region in the literatures available from the 19th century and also did a research over the internet. The majority of the texts were available in Hungarian language, but English texts were also accessible. Since I currently work for one of the most prestigious wineries in Tokaj Wine Region, this thesis will be based mostly on my personal research and discussions with vineyard workers, winemakers and CEOs from the region. I will use my experiences from the Export Markets to localize the possibilities of the Furmint variety and the Wines from Tokaj in general.

    SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE STRATEGY OF THE VINE & WINE SECTOR WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE MÁTRAALJA WINE REGION Dr. MAGDA, SÁNDOR - Dr. GERGELY, SÁNDOR SUMMARY The essential objects of the present study are the description of the strategic aspects of the vine & wine sector and the detailed analysis of the Mátraalja wine region (MWR), which is Hungary s largest mountain-slope wine growing area. A questionnaire assessment served as a basis for the study, within the framework of which the managers of MWR wine confraternities were asked questions about the parameters of their respective wine confraternities, and their opinions of the present situation of the latter, along with the possibilities of de­ veloping them. Further issues examined were: the required development of infrastructure, including the inadequate wine-processing, storage and bottling capacities, their qualitative and quantitative characteristics, and the possibilities of establishing them; the establishment of an advisory system to serve vine growers’ interests; the possibilities of establishing a regional plant protection and weather forecast system, and its prospective effects on profitability and environmental protection. Finally, the structure of grape varieties, the aspects of creating a potential leading wine and of its marketing, the establishment of competitive wineries, the implementation of a system of trade and logistics based on Internet, and the effective realisation of marketing coordinated by the MWR Wine Commercial House were examined. The present study does not contain all tables and charts compiled by the authors but draws conclusions from them.
