Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. -

Anything beyond the shores of Manhattan is designated, sometimes with condescension, “regional theater.” Lesbian and gay drama maps onto this topography. The history of scripted live performances by or about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in New York City is the history of a vexed relationship with Broadway, the mainstream visibility it offers, and the politics and aesthetics it polices. Broadway is an object of desire, a longed-for sign of success that can seduce theater practitioners toward conservative aesthetics and poli- tics, away from radical experimentation and social engagement. Broadway spotlights a few extraordinarily talented queer playwrights – often but not always white gay men – while routinely eclipsing equally brilliant people of color, white lesbians, and feminists of all stripes. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: ‘THAT WASN’T JUST A PARTY:’ RECONSIDERING THE PLAYS OF ROBERT CHESLEY Rebecca Lynn Gavrila, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation Directed by: Dr. Faedra Chatard Carpenter School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies “That Wasn’t Just A Party: Reconsidering The Plays of Robert Chesley” is a reclamation project that is placing Robert Chesley as a significant voice of Gay and Sexual Liberation in the Post-Stonewall gay theatrical canon. As the majority of his plays were both unproduced and unpublished, this project serves to introduce a contemporary, mainstream audience to the dramatic writings of Robert Chesley. Chesley is best known for writing the first full-length AIDS play to be produced in the United States, Night Sweats. Unlike his contemporaries, Larry Kramer and William Hoffman, Chesley never saw his work cross-over into the commercial mainstream in part because of his commitment to staging graphic gay sex scenes. Sadly, Robert Chesley would become a victim of the AIDS crisis, dying in 1990. The political and artistic ideologies represented by Chesley’s works are currently under-acknowledged within the gay American theatre canon. By exploring Robert Chesley and the way his work addressed the ideals of Sexual Liberation I am contributing to the discourse of gay cultural criticism and gay theatre history. Hoffman is best known for his ground-breaking, critically acclaimed play As Is, one of the first theatrical works to focus on the AIDS epidemic. Skillfully mingling humor, indignation, and pathos, As Is tells its central story about a man's personal struggle with AIDS, while also denouncing mainstream society for its silence about, and perceived indifference to, the enormity of the AIDS crisis. The play opened in a New York off-Broadway production in March 1985 (followed a month later by Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart, another enraged chronicle of the early years of the AIDS epidemic), and due to its critical and commercial success was transferred to an award-winning Broadway production two months later. Early Life and Career William M. Hoffman was born in New York City on April 12, 1939 of Eastern European immigrants. While neither of his parents had a formal education, Hoffman has explained in interviews, "learning was encouraged." He attended the City College of New York, studying English and Latin. After graduating with honors in 1960, Hoffman went to work for the book publishing company Hill and Wang. As an editor there he helped promote the careers of several prominent gay and lesbian playwrights, including Joe Orton, Robert Patrick, Jane Chambers, Tom Eyen, and Lanford Wilson, by featuring their works in the New American Plays series and the pioneering anthology Gay Plays: The First Collection (1979). -

Key Words i Abstract Across ages and cultures, music has been associated with sexual allure, gender inversion and suspect sexuality. Music has been theorised as both a putative agent of moral corruption and an expressive mechanism of gender and sexual signification, capable of arousing and channelling sexual urges and desires. This research examines musically facilitated expressions of queerness and queer identity, asking how and why music is used by queer musicians and musical performers to express non-normative gender and sexual identities. A queer theoretical approach to gender and sexuality, coupled with interdisciplinary theories concerning music as an identificatory practice, provides the theoretical landscape for this study. An investigation into queer musical episodes such as this necessitates an exploration of the broader cultural milieu in which queer musical work occurs.
