Researchers should contact Special Collections to request collections, as many are stored offsite. Biography Napa Valley entrepreneur and wine enthusiast Joanne DePuy (1927-) is the founder of Wine Tours International, Wine Adventures, the Napa Valley Docent Council, Tennis Limited, and the Napa Valley Wine Symposium. She has been active in the Napa Valley wine world since 1973, when she launched Wine Tours International with the idea of creating a way for winemakers around the world to meet and learn from one another. When Ms. DePuy founded Wine Tours International, she particularly wanted to have some of her tours led by famed winemaker André Tchelistcheff. It took some time to convince Tchelistcheff, whose schedule was already very full, but in 1976, he agreed to conduct a wine tour of France for Napa Valley vintners. This tour happened to coincide with a wine tasting that would soon become famous for elevating the status of California wines worldwide: the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, popularly known as the "Judgment of Paris". Steven Spurrier, one of the organizers of the tasting, was having difficulty getting the California wines through customs. Since Ms. DePuy's tour group was headed to Paris shortly before the tasting was to take place, she found a way to shuttle the wines over with her group, thus ensuring that the tasting could take place as planned. In 1981, Joanne DePuy founded the Napa Valley Wine Symposium, an annual event featuring tours, tastings, and lectures by prominent figures in the world of wine. She served as the event's director from 1981 to 1983. Ms. DePuy's other contributions to the world of wine include serving on the Board of Directors for the Stags Leap Wine District from 1979-2001 and establishing a modest vineyard in Yountville with her late husband, Newell DePuy, Jr. Joanne DePuy remains active in the Napa Valley community. She is closely involved with local healthcare organizations, including the creation of a lecture series on integrative health at Queen of the Valley Hospital and serving on the Board of Trustees of the Napa Valley Medical Center Foundation. • California's ERA Ratification and Women's Policy Activism
“The Time Was Right to Generate Some Heat”: California’s ERA Ratification and Women’s Policy Activism Western Association of Political Scientists San Diego, CA April 18 - 20, 2019 Doreen J. Mattingly, Professor and Chair Department of Women’s Studies, San Diego State University [email protected] 1 “The Time Was Right to Generate Some Heat”: California’s ERA Ratification and Women’s Policy Activism Abstract In California, the 1972 campaign to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the United States constitution pitted amendment supporters against labor leaders trying to protect women- only protective labor laws. The seven-month struggle campaign in California resulted in a vote for ratification and motivated several years of legislative activity on women’s issues. Most scholarship about ERA ratification in the US in the 1970s examines the reasons the amendment failed; this paper takes a different tack by investigating a state where the ERA was successful. The ERA campaign was a key element in the embrace of women’s issues by the state’s Democratic Party. This paper also provides an in-depth analysis of the relationship between labor feminists and equal rights feminists, two groups that were opposed during the ratification campaign, but were frequent allies on women’s issues before and after 1972. Introduction Through the 1970s, women’s groups tried unsuccessfully to achieve the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would have instituted an explicit constitutional prohibition on sex discrimination. On March 22, 1972, the US Congress passed the ERA and sent it to the states for ratification, and in 1982 the ERA failed, three states short of the 38 needed to add the amendment to the constitution.1 After a long battle, California became the twenty-second state to ratify the amendment on November 13, 1972.

  • Charming Charleston | California Tour Blog
2/1/2018 Charming Charleston | California Tour Blog Charming Charleston March 6, 2013 at 12:49 am Charleston, South Carolina, must be pretty special to be voted the “top city destination in the world” by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. And it is special. From its antebellum architecture and historic attractions to a thriving dining scene, cultural treasures, nearby beaches and world-class golf, Charleston is one of a kind. History is the major draw here. Founded in 1670, Charleston was the wealthiest seaport south of Philadelphia during Colonial times. It has survived earthquakes, hurricanes, and attacks from the Spanish, French, Native Americans, pirates, and the British during the Revolutionary War. The Civil War began here when Confederate troops fired the first shots at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. (Fort Sumter is only accessible through boat tours, but it can also been seen clearly from dramatic viewpoints around the harbor such as Battery Park, Patriots’ Park, the USS Yorktown, and the colorful townhouses known as Rainbow Road.) Charleston’s prosperity was wiped out during the years of war and reconstruction. But the city has rebuilt its economy while preserving and restoring its rich architectural heritage. http://www.california-tour.com/blog/charming-charleston/ 1/5 2/1/2018 Charming Charleston | California Tour Blog Cobblestone Street in Charleston The best time to visit Charleston is spring (April through June), when blooming azaleas, magnolias and wisteria accent cobblestone streets and lush gardens. The weather is mild – the average daily high is 75 degrees and the low is 54, with 52 inches of rain annually.
