15 THE CHRISTUS VIVIT AWARD

Chosen by the faculty — after consideration of personal knowledge and/or recommendations by others — the recipient(s) of the Christus Vivit award have demonstrated exemplary service to the church.

Richard and Lynn Gast

Richard “Dick” and Lynn Gast were born and raised in Wisconsin. They met at Calvary Lutheran Student Center at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, marrying in 1971 and later moving to Milwaukee.

In 1985, they moved their family to Mission Viejo, Calif. There the young Lutheran transplants from Wisconsin were making it through their first California winter without family or many close friends when they decided to take a drive to Pasadena on New Year's Eve to watch the final preparations for the famed New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade. Having watched the parade all of their lives while living in Wisconsin they were hoping to see the Lutheran Hour float.

The couple clearly saw God’s hand in that trip causing the Gasts to decide to volunteer the next year to help decorate the Lutheran Hour float. In fact, the only picture from that day’s adventure that could be developed was one picture of their family taken in front of the float. In 1990, they became part of the Lutheran Hour Ministries Float Committee and were eventually asked to take over leadership of the committee. That three-year commitment has become 27 years of sacrificial, visionary leadership: Dick as general chairman and Lynn as Petal Pushers chairman, a group of 5,000 volunteers who decorate the Lutheran Hour float and nine other floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade every year. The Lutheran Hour float, with the theme “Celebrate Jesus,” made its 67th appearance in the parade Jan. 2, 2017. It serves as the only Christian witness in the parade. The Tournament of Roses Parade is watched live by more than 1 million people on Colorado Boulevard, by about 46 million Americans on television and by tens of millions more in countries around the world.

At the heart of the Gasts’ leadership beats the shining light of Jesus Christ. The couple remind the two daily shifts of Petal Pushers volunteers that they are witnesses for Christ who will be working alongside believers and nonbelievers alike. They tell them that the manner in which they complete their task is just as important as getting the task completed. The Gasts minister privately and publicly with their float colleagues, praying for those who are facing illnesses or the loss of loved ones, holding hands with others going through divorces or suffering other losses, and offering encouragement to any who need it.

In addition to serving on the Lutheran Hour Ministries Float Committee, the Gasts volunteer for the California Orphan Grain Train. Dick is a member of the International Lutheran Layman’s League Board of Directors and Lynn is the secretary for the Southern California District Lutheran Layman’s League. Dick has been president of Richard Gast & Associates since 1977 and Lynn is a registered nurse case manager for OptumCare.

The Gasts, who worship at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Lake Forest, Calif., have three daughters and one grandson.

16 THE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

Reverend Doctor Michael Coppersmith

Rev. Dr. Michael Coppersmith exemplifies the mission of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis to “provide theological education and leadership centered in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for the formation of pastors, missionaries, deaconesses, scholars and leaders.”

Prior to attending Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Coppersmith served as a Lutheran elementary school teacher at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oxnard, Calif. Sent from the Seminary following his ordination in 1980, his first call was as a mission planter in the LCMS Minnesota North District, where he served as the founding pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Baxter, Minn.

Later, he served as the senior pastor of Our Savior’s Community Lutheran Church in Palm Springs, Calif., for 29 years. Our Savior’s is noted for its outreach in a diverse community, and a large majority of its members have come from unchurched and non-Lutheran backgrounds.

During the National Leadership Summit (NLS) in 2013 at Concordia Seminary, President Dr. Dale A. Meyer asked Coppersmith to take the lead in organizing “Prayer Warriors” for the Seminary. This was in recognition of the challenges and opportunities discussed at the NLS that require focused and daily prayer. Coppersmith continues to lead the Prayer Warriors ministry with absolute dedication and commitment, resulting in many new prayer supporters of the Seminary.

In addition to leading the Prayer Warriors ministry, Coppersmith also has been serving as chaplain for the Seminary’s volunteer National Campaign Council (NCC), which was formed following the NLS in 2013. The NCC serves to provide direction and guidance for the Generations Campaign, the largest fundraising effort in the Seminary’s history. His pastoral care is deeply appreciated by the NCC members as well as Seminary staff.

Coppersmith graduated with a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in 1980. He received his Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological University in Pasadena, Calif., in 1990.

He and his wife, Donna, have been married for 38 years (1979) and have one daughter and two grandchildren.

Rev. Dr. Curtis H. Peters has served faithfully “equipping the saints for the work of ministry” as a pastor and educator with a heart for mission. Peters has nobly served the people of God and The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS).

He is the author of Kant’s Philosophy of Hope (New York: Peter Lang Publishing, 1993). His most recent writings include co-authoring with Larry D. Mansch, Martin Luther: The Life and Lessons (Jefferson, N.C.: McFarland and Co., 2016) and A Family Treasure: The Fascinating Account of an Immigrant Ancestry (Jeffersonville, Ind.: Budget Printing Center, 2016), a book of family genealogy.

Peters is an alumnus of Washington University in St. Louis; Heidelberg University, Heidelberg, Germany; Concordia Senior College; and , Valparaiso, Ind. He received a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 1969.

He and his wife, Pam, have been married for 52 years. They have three children and nine grandchildren.

18 CANDIDATE FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF DIVINITY

Reverend Doctor Carlos Walter Winterle Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa

“And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47 ESV).

Rev. Dr. Carlos Walter Winterle’s many years of experience reveal a man who is a pastor, missionary, theological educator and church leader, having served on the International Lutheran Council and as president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil.

Winterle, now a missionary with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil, has served since 2011 as pastor of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Edgemead in Cape Town, South Africa. He is the current coordinator of the Theological Education Program in Mozambique, a joint effort of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB), the Concordia Lutheran Church in Mozambique, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) Office of International Mission, the Mission of the Lutheran Churches in Germany and the Free Evangelical Lutheran Synod in South Africa (FELSISA), to train more church leaders for the fast-growing church body. In 2015, there were 10 congregations when the first eight pastors graduated and were ordained. Now, there are more than 60 churches. Winterle said, “The doors are open to the Gospel and God’s kingdom is growing very fast. Praise the Lord for the many blessings He has poured upon Mozambique.” Two new classes of 30 students each have been prepared through the theological education program, one since 2015 and the other since 2016.

He previously served from 2006-10 as pastor of the International Congregation– Uhuru Highway Lutheran Cathedral in Nairobi, Kenya. From 1998-2006 Winterle served as the national president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil. He was the secretary of the International Lutheran Council from 1999-2005 and vice president from 2005-06. At Concordia Seminary of São Leopoldo, he was an assistant professor in homiletics from 1990-93. From 1988-98 he served as pastor of Concordia Lutheran Congregation in Porto Alegre, RS. From 1973-88 he served as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in São Paulo, where he also worked as a church planter. During his mission time in São Paulo, he also served as speaker of the Lutheran Hour in that city for eight years. Since 1981 he has served on many LCMS committees.

A 1972 alumnus of Concordia Seminary, Porto Alegre, Brazil, Winterle was ordained in 1973. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws (LL.D.) from Concordia University Texas, Austin, in 2000, and an honorary doctorate of divinity (D.D.) from Concordia University, Irvine, Calif., in 2004.

He and his wife, Lidia, have three children and six grandchildren.

19 CANDIDATE FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF LETTERS

Doctor John Lautenschlager, M.D. Doctor of Letters, honoris causa

“Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36 ESV).

At age 11, John Lautenschlager wanted to be a missionary. When Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod (LCMS) missionary Rev. Harold “Hector” Ottemoeller married a young woman from Lautenschlager’s rural California congregation, he became the boy’s role model and later his mentor. Lautenschlager pursued a course leading to service in the LCMS, graduating from California Concordia College, Oakland, Calif., in 1960, receiving a bachelor’s degree from Concordia Senior College in 1962 and entering Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. During his first year at the Seminary he found that his gifts and interests led him to service as a medical missionary.

He received his M.D. from Saint Louis University Medical School in 1968 and spent two years at Louisiana State University in postgraduate medical training before becoming an LCMS missionary physician in Nigeria. He arrived in 1970 with his wife, Bobbie, a nurse, and their 2-year-old son, David, and 1-year-old daughter, Katrina, shortly after the end of the 3-year-long Nigeria-Biafra civil war. After more than a year involved in rehabilitation of war-affected health centers and a short educational stint in Uganda and Rwanda, the Lautenschlagers moved to the Ogoja region of eastern Nigeria and served among the Ukele people, who were rapidly making the transition from traditional religion to Christianity. The couple concentrated their work on village-based primary care clinics and public health work rather than through large medical facilities far removed from the villages in distance and time. In 1985, after 15 years in Nigeria, the Lautenschlagers went to Sierra Leone where new mission work was beginning among the Kono people.

The family returned to the United States in 1989 after 19 years of service. After Lautenschlager received his board certification in family practice medicine, he served for 18 years as an outpatient primary care doctor for the St. Louis County Department of Health. Meanwhile he also served as a voluntary physician for the Seminary and as an adviser for LCMS missionary health issues.

Lautenschlager now serves as a board member for Lutherans in Medical Missions (LIMM). He and his wife visited several countries in conjunction with advisory work for LIMM. He has completed unpublished research on the traditional health systems of three African societies and his research on childhood nutrition has been published in the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics.

Lautenschlager, whose wife passed away in 2012, is a member of Historic Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Louis and continues to see ways to serve his Lord through volunteer work in the St. Louis area, especially with Christian Friends of New Americans. He has two children and five grandchildren.
