Ray A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics Bryn Mawr College December 2017 Abstract Language has the power to unite and uplift societies as well as divide and exclude. In this investigation I identify how language is incessantly utilized as a tool to exclude, erase, and publicly shame Black women within the African diaspora, and specifically in the United States and Ecuador.
