A 50-year-old former domestic worker was sentenced to 24 months in jail after pleading guilty to stealing over $300,000 from his employer and gambling it away. District Court Judge Timothy Casewell gave a one-third discount to A.I. Laberos after the latter pleaded guilty to the charge in the early stage of the case. Owing to this, Laberos, who has been in custody since August 2016, would instead be serv- ing 16 months in jail. Laberos’ employer found out that $365,050 cash and jewelry were missing, and the domestic helper admitted to taking the items and money and gambling all of it. Laberos started working in Hong Kong in 2011. The Filipino was supporting his mother and two other siblings in the Philippines. THE first thing I noticed upon arriving in Chiang Mai is a kind of lightness, softness even, in the air. It was not immediately recognizable; in fact, it is the kind of thing that slowly dawns on you, like a realiza- tion and an eventual submission. I boarded a taxi outside the airport and grew a bit apprehensive since my hotel is located in a secluded area. The driver, however, assured me that it is safe to roam around even at night.
