Eminent Persons Group for the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) Alpha Oumar Konaré (Co-chair) Alpha Oumar Konaré is a Malian politician. He was President of Mali from 1992 to 2002 and Chairperson of the African Union Commission from 2003 to 2008. Former President of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1999 and of the West African Monetary Union (UEMOA) in 2000, he has tirelessly worked for peace and integration in the West African region. Alpha Oumar Konaré is a member of the « Haut Conseil de la Francophonie ». President Konaré commands huge respect throughout Africa. James Wolfensohn (Co-chair) James Wolfensohn is Chairman and CEO of Wolfensohn & Company, L.L.C., a private investment firm. He was the ninth President of the World Bank from 1995 to 2005. He is also Chairman of the advisory group of the Wolfensohn Centre for Development, a new research initiative focusing on global poverty at the Brookings Institute. Wolfensohn became president of the World Bank on 1 July 1995. He was unanimously reconducted to a second five-year term in 2000. He visited more than 120 countries around the world during his term as president. He is credited, with being the first World Bank president to bring attention to the problem of corruption in the area of development financing. Louis Michel Louis Michel is a Belgian Member of European Parliament. Before that, he served as European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid until July 2009. His tenure as Commissioner marked a period of increasing intervention by the Commission as the key development partner to most LDCs. A prominent member of the French-speaking liberal party, the Mouvement Réformateur (MR), he was Belgium's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice-prime Minister in two successive governments of 1999 until July 2004. Hiromosa Yonekura Mr. Yonekura joined Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. in 1960 and became President in 2000. He remained in this position until 2009, when he became Chairman of the Board of Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. Mr. Yonekura also serves as Chairman of the Committee on Europe and the Committee on Promotion of Economic Partnerships of Nippon Keidanren; He also served as Chairman of the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association; and Chairman of the Commission on Promotion of Public-Private Cooperation for the fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) and the Japan-Africa Exchange Year in 2007. Kemal Dervis Mr. Dervis is the vice president and director of Global Economy and Development at Brookings Institution. He was formerly head of the United Nations Development Programme from August 2005 to February 2009. From 1977 to 2001, Mr. Dervis worked at the World Bank in various capacities, positions held include: Division Chief for Industrial and Trade Strategy and Director for the Central Europe Department. From March 2001 to August 2002, Derviş was Minister for Economic Affairs and the Treasury of the Republic of Turkey. He has been credited for Turkey's recovery programme after the devastating financial crisis that hit the country in February 2001. Nancy Birdsall Nancy Birdsall is the founding president of the Center for Global Development and was previously the executive vice president of the Inter-American Development Bank. Prior to becoming the President of CGD, Birdsall served for three years as Senior Associate and Director of the Economic Reform Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her work at Carnegie focused on issues of globalization and inequality, as well as on the reform of the international financial institutions. Before joining the Inter-American Development Bank, Birdsall spent 14 years in research, policy, and management positions at the World Bank, most recently as director of the Policy Research Department. Sir Fazle Hassan Abed Sir Fazle Hassan Abed is an outstanding academic and successful business leader who epitomises the concept of social responsibility. He is the founder and chairperson of the Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee (BRAC), a civil society organisation based in Bangladesh. For his outstanding contributions to social improvement, he has received the UNDP Mahbub Ul Haq Award and the inaugural Clinton Global Citizen Award. Louis A. Kasekende Dr. Louis A. Kasekende is the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda. From May 2006 to 2009 he served as the chief economist of the African Development Bank (AfDB’s). During his tenure, he is credited for playing a leading role in the AfDB’s efforts to help African economies withstand the impact of the global economic crisis. Kasekende was one of the key figures in transforming post-conflict Uganda. He has written extensively on a wide range of economic subjects and his work has been widely published in journals and books. Between 2002 and 2004, Kasekende was seconded to the World Bank by the Uganda government to serve as the Executive Director to the World Bank. Sir Richard Jolly Sir Richard Jolly is Honorary Professor and Research Associate of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. As co-director of the UN Intellectual History Project, he is currently overseeing and working on a 16 volume history of the UN’s contributions to economic and social development since 1945. Richard Jolly was an Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations holding senior positions in UNICEF and UNDP for nearly 20 years. He was from 1996 to 2000 Special Adviser to the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and architect of the widely-acclaimed Human Development Report. Before joining the UN, Richard Jolly was from 1972 to 1981 Director of the Institute of Development Studies. .
