Known as “the father of opera in Western Canada,” Irving Guttman mentored and developed many famous singers, and directed numerous operas in Canada and overseas. Irving Guttman’s contributions to the opera in Canada are vast. He established himself as artistic director of the Vancouver and Edmonton operas in 1960 and 1965 respectively, and serving in these roles congruently; became artistic director of the Manitoba opera in 1977; and lastly served as the founding artistic director of the Saskatchewan opera in 1999. Although Mr. Guttman retired in 2003, he continued to mentor young opera students at the University of British Columbia until 2010. Mr. Guttman received the Canadian Centennial Medal (1967), the Canada 125 Medal (1992), and the Queen’s Golden (2002) and Diamond Jubilee Medals (2012). He was a member of the Order of Canada (1988), and the Order of British Columbia (2002), and was inducted into the Canadian Opera Hall of Fame in 1995. Mr. Guttman died on December 7th, 2014 in Vancouver, B.C. Scope and content The Irving Guttman Collection is a large collection of photographs of different people and places in the opera world. However, other operas such as Madam Butterfly, Daughter of the Regiment, Othello, Carmen and more are included in the Collection. University of British Columbia Library Rare Books and Special Collections Page 3 RBSC-ARC-1752 Irving Guttman collection The second part of the collection consists of autographed portraits of opera performers, and other operatic stakeholders. After a bit of coaching, the famous film star made her operatic debut far from Hollywood in, of all places, Montreal. In the thrilled audience that historic night was gangly teenager Irving Guttman. The young man was so captivated by what he saw and heard, he made his way backstage to secure Ms. MacDonald’s autograph, a keepsake he treasured all his life. More importantly, her performance in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette launched the smitten youth on an intense, lifelong affair with an art form that took him to opera houses around the world and a directing career that was astonishing in its breadth. Over the course of four decades, beginning when professional productions in this country were in their infancy, Irving Guttman put an indelible stamp on Canadian opera. He made his mark particularly in the West, where he spearheaded the establishment of not one, but four separate companies. With his ambitious vision and unerring skill at seeking out and landing the perfect voices for his productions, he brought some of opera’s most renowned singers to places such as Vancouver and Edmonton, which were then known to attract timber and oil men – not opera stars.

  • Emergent Media and Opera Circulation in Twentieth-Century North America
Emergent Media and Opera Circulation in Twentieth-Century North America by Brianna Lindsay Wells A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in ENGLISH Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Brianna Wells, 2017 ii Abstract In North America, opera constitutes both an art form and an industry. Because companies rely on philanthropy and ticket revenues, they respond to a mass audience among the public at large, and yet granting agencies’ and critics’ influence suggests restricted circulation and in some ways a “high” culture status. Opera’s multifaceted performance practices and its contradictory social roles in North America are reflected in the diverse disciplines currently engaging in its study. Critical musicology has, since the early 1990s, increasingly studied operatic texts through theoretical lenses of post-structuralism (Levin, Kramer) feminism (McClary), psychoanalysis (Abbate) and musical dramaturgy (Bianconi). More recently, issues of prominence include digital contexts of performance and composition (Morris, Michaels) and indigeneity (Karantonis, Robinson). Literary scholars have examined issues of adaptation and intertextuality (Lindenberger, Hutcheon, Wiesenthal). Historians have investigated the business of opera (Preston, Dizikes), and social science approaches, especially those related to Bourdieu’s formative study Distinction, focus on the relationships between the art form and its audiences (Calhoun, Benzecry, Johnson). As a richly multidisciplinary field, opera studies follows, in general, two trends. The first treats the opera score or performance context as its object of study, and the second focuses on political or social circumstances of opera production in specific historical periods or geographic locations. This study investigates the boundaries between these approaches.
