Fiberart International 2022 Returns to Pittsburgh --- 24th Triennial Exhibition Exploring Relationships Between Innovative Textile Art from Around the World.
Fiber art has become a widely celebrated art medium, one that is ever evolving and crosses the boundaries between fine art and craft. The scope of this medium will be exemplified by the artworks displayed in, Fiberart International 2022 (FI2022), the 24th exhibition of contemporary textile art sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, Inc. FI2022 will feature artwork by artists from the US and abroad. The exhibition will be hosted by two respected Pittsburgh arts organizations: Contemporary Craft (5645 Butler Street) and the Brew House Association (711 South 21st Street). Opening receptions and awards ceremonies will take place at both locations on Friday, June 3, 2022 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The exhibition will be free and open to the public, and will be on view through August 20, 2022. More than 10,000 visitors from all over the world are expected to visit the exhibition.
Fiberart International 2022 will record the changing definition of textile art and gives the audience a chance to experience works by a diverse group of artists who have been underrepresented in large institutions. Internationally respected artists and exhibition jurors, Chiachio & Giannone, Jessica Hemmings and Nnenna Okore will review art works submitted by artists from across the United States and from around the world.
The exhibition will present viewers with art that explores the unexpected relationships between textile art and other creative disciplines. Drawing on a variety of visual languages and global points of view, ancient textile techniques are transformed into contemporary artworks that ask questions and challenge us to look at ourselves and our place in the world.
Exhibition related activities will be scheduled during the run of the show.
On Saturday, June 4, the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh will present the Fiberart Forum. This day-long event will feature a keynote address and informal discussion groups with exhibiting artists. The day will begin at Contemporary Craft and continue at the Brew House Association. Lunch and transportation between galleries are included in the ticket price. ABOUT THE JURORS Chiachio & Giannone Working and living together as partners in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Chiachio & Giannone create hand embroidered textile mosaics that reference LGBTQ artists and their legacy in Latin America. Chiachio & Giannone recently completed a residency at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, CA and Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, CA. They have shown at De Buck Gallery, New York, NY; Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Miami, FL; Ruth Benzacar Galería de Arte, Argentina, School Gallery, Paris, France, the Boston Center for the Arts, Boston, MA; and the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK, Museum of Art and Design MAD, NY, USA. http://www.chiachiogiannone.com
Jessica Hemmings writes about textiles. She earned her BFA in Textile Design at the Rhode Island School of Design, MA in Comparative Literature (Africa/Asia) at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, and PhD from the University of Edinburgh, UK. Her editorial and curatorial project, Cultural Threads, is a book about postcolonial thinking and contemporary textile practice (Bloomsbury: 2015) accompanied by a travelling exhibition Migrations. Jessica is a member of the Editorial Board of Textile: the journal of cloth & culture (Taylor & Francis) and Craft Research (Intellect). She is currently Professor of Craft & Vice- Prefekt of Research at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and the 2020-2021 Rita Bolland Fellow at the Research Centre for Material Culture, the Netherlands. https://www.jessicahemmings.com
Nnenna Okore (born in Australia, 1975) is an artist who works both in Nigeria and the United States. Her largely abstract sculptures and installations have been shown in galleries and museums in and outside of the United States. She has won several international awards, including a Fulbright Scholar Award in 2012. Okore is currently a Professor of Art at North Park University in Chicago, where she teaches sculpture. The daughter of a professor and a librarian, she often examines her American identity versus her Nigerian identity and the contrasts between her homeland with that of the States. https://nnennaokore.com
