Bolotho Barns Information Book We are delighted to welcome you to Bolotho Barns Bolotho Barns were converted from 19th century stables and farm buildings in 2010, and opened to guests shortly after that. Each barn has been created to be the kind of relaxing luxury holiday cottage that we would like to stay in ourselves. Bolotho is ideally located to explore Cornwall, with just a short drive to both north and south coasts. if you need us please come around to our front door around the end of the two storey barn (Bolotho Mews), knock and stand back, or put a note through our letter box. In the bathroom you will find natural bubble bath/shower gel and soap from Cornish company Trevarno. Please be careful not to catch your fingers in the bedroom door which is self-closing and it is recommended to close your bedroom door at night for fire safety reasons. For the same reason, sorry no candles or oil burners inside the barns, and no smoking in the barns. There is a heatproof mat on the dressing table for the use of hair styling tools. In Skylarks the exterior door from the bedroom is for emergency use only. In Bramblings the bedroom windows provide emergency exits and there is a chair adjacent to the windows if needed. Skylarks only – the skylights cannot be opened Patio furniture cushions can be found in the green box on the patio area. Please could you store them in the box when not in use to keep them dry. Thank you. Please could you switch off the outside courtyard lights when you go to bed – thank you. Wood burning stove – if you are not used to these stoves, here are some tips on getting the best use of it: Open main door, put a small piece of firelighter at the bottom, cover with 3-4 sticks kindling, then a couple of logs. Light the firelighter with a match, close door and enjoy! Top up with more logs as they burn down. Please never put half burnt logs back into the log basket or rest any objects on or against the wood burner. The vent knobs shouldn’t usually need adjusting. There is a supply of logs and kindling at the end of the stables for your use – try starting the fire with orange coloured wood (faster to burn), followed by whiter wood (longer burning). Bolotho Barns, Bolotho Mews, Killiow, Truro, Cornwall, TR3 6AG. www.bolothobarns.co.uk Central Heating – can be adjusted on the boiler controls or on individual radiators. Bathroom towel rail can be operated independently of the heating with the button at bottom right. To run a hot bath – run only the hot tap until you have sufficient hot water before adding cold water. • Responsibilities for Flood Risk Management
Appendix A - Responsibilities for Flood Risk Management The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has overall responsibility for flood risk management in England. Their aim is to reduce flood risk by: • discouraging inappropriate development in areas at risk of flooding. • encouraging adequate and cost effective flood warning systems. • encouraging adequate technically, environmentally and economically sound and sustainable flood defence measures. The Government’s Foresight Programme has recently produced a report called Future Flooding, which warns that the risk of flooding will increase between 2 and 20 times over the next 75 years. The report produced by the Office of Science and Technology has a long-term vision for the future (2030 – 2100), helping to make sure that effective strategies are developed now. Sir David King, the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government concluded: “continuing with existing policies is not an option – in virtually every scenario considered (for climate change), the risks grow to unacceptable levels. Secondly, the risk needs to be tackled across a broad front. However, this is unlikely to be sufficient in itself. Hard choices need to be taken – we must either invest in more sustainable approaches to flood and coastal management or learn to live with increasing flooding”. In response to this, Defra is leading the development of a new strategy for flood and coastal erosion for the next 20 years. This programme, called “Making Space for Water” will help define and set the agenda for the Government’s future strategic approach to flood risk. Within this strategy there will be an overall approach to the assessing options through a strong and continuing commitment to CFMPs and SMPs within a broader planning framework which will include River Basin Management Plans prepared under the Water Framework Directive and Integrated Coastal Zone Management.

THE MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS OF CORNWALL Cofscryvow Kernow THE PARISH OF MOUNT HAWKE Towl Bedhcryvow Kernow Numerous plaques, burial ground headstones, foundation stones and formal monuments record the lives or actions of both the famous and successful as well as the ordinary person. By far the most numerous of these will be found in burial grounds, others will be located on War Memorials; inscriptions are inevitably inscribed on foundation stones of public buildings; special plaques may be erected to record an heroic or notable event or birth place; there are prominent monuments to the rich or extraordinary such as the Bassett Monument on Carn Brea or the Lander statue at the top of Lemon Street in Truro; churches and chapels as well as community buildings often have wall plaques. The majority will date from the past three hundred years but some will be very old, such as a few ancient crosses from the seventh/eight centuries recording a chieftain or important person of that time. Written records such as parish baptism, marriage and death registers, diaries, deeds, court, taxes and voting records and numerous other “paper” records are, in varying degrees of efficiency, preserved and recorded by the County Records Office and museums and transcribed, indexed and published by local historians and societies. However, numerous records of the people of Cornwall may also be found on stone, slate, marble, wood and metal. Some of these (particularly in burial grounds) have been recorded but usually in index form without a full transcript. Maps indicating locations within a burial ground are virtually nonexistent.
