Theatre Workshop Edinburgh, now called Theatre Workshop Scotland, was established in 1965 as a drama centre for children. In the 1970s the company began to work with disabled people and remained committed to completely inclusive theatre thereafter. In 2009, after a long period as a producing and receiving theatre in its Hamilton Place premises in Edinburgh, Theatre Workshop stopped operating as a building-based theatre company and became a theatre and film production and development company. Theatre Workshop Scotland continues in its mission of working with, and giving a voice to, marginalised groups. For Theatre Workshop’s production archive circa 1990-2008, see Acc.13016. Deputation: Leith Theatre Trust – Leith Theatre and Thomas Morton Hall The Committee agreed to hear a deputation from Philip Neaves, John Paul MacGroarty and Jack Hunter, Leith Theatre Trust, in support of the recommendations in the Director’s report (item 2 below). The main points raised by the deputation were: Once on site, the Trust could devote more time to marketing the Theatre to businesses/organisations. The Theatre could be used for a number of different purposes, i.e. weddings. Relevant organisations had been researched to identify potential sources of grant funding. The Trust would be able to apply for Lottery funding to transform the main theatre into a usable condition. The Convener thanked the Deputation for their presentation and invited them to remain for the Committee’s consideration of the report by the Director of Services for Communities. (Reference – e-mail dated 20 May 2013, submitted.) 2. Leith Theatre and Thomas Morton Hall Details were provided of the lease terms and conditions for a five year lease of Leith Theatre and Thomas Morton Hall to the Leith Theatre Trust. Motion 1) To authorise officers to create a five year lease, on appropriate terms and conditions, for Leith Theatre and Thomas Morton Hall to Leith Theatre Trust (LTT). 2) To agree in principle to creating a further 30 year lease, giving LTT full financial responsibility.

Leith Neighbourhood Network Inaugural Meeting, 30 May 2019
Leith Neighbourhood Network inaugural meeting, 30 May 2019 This report based is on my notes taken at the meeting, and my recollections on 7 June 2019. The meeting was opened by Evelyn Kilmurry (North East Locality Manager – Place, City of Edinburgh Council). She stated that her role is to facilitate/support the network, and noted that there are three other neighbourhood networks (NNs) in northeast Edinburgh. NNs are ward-based, so in NE Edinburgh the NNs are Leith/Leith Walk, Craigentinny/Duddingston and Portobello/Craigmillar. The latter two NNs also had their inaugural meetings this week. Evelyn said that the aims of this meeting are to be informal, to enable networking, to find what Leith NN can do to make things better for Leith people. The point of NNs is to enable local people to have their say. Hence NN members are local people, not council staff or elected members. What is an NN? Evelyn stated that it is not a council service or committee, and that it is not a place to make service requests or complaints. NNs must meet at least once each year, to engage with local people and the wider community, e.g. on service development. Each NN is a place for community groups to work together with service providers to solve problems, and to deliver the priorities in the local improvement plan, e.g. action on child poverty, social isolation and loneliness, improving environment. It is up to the NN members to develop its membership. Hence we should start by looking into whether we want to grow or refine Leith NN’s membership, starting with the current list.

The collection chiefly relates to the Gateway Theatre, (1953-1965) in which Marillyn Gray was a regular performer. The Gateway papers came into her care at some point after the theatre closed possibly entrusted to her by, or after the death of, Sadie Aitken (1905-85) Gateway Theatre General Manager, some of whose papers are in the collection. Marillyn Gray was born in Edinburgh, attending Trinity Academy. After serving her apprenticeship at Perth Repertory theatre she had her first major role in 1951 with the Glasgow Citizens’ Spindrift written by Naomi Mitchison and Denis Macintosh, playing alongside Duncan Macrae and Fulton MacKay. Thereafter she became a stalwart at the Gateway Theatre in Edinburgh. She also worked for many years with Jimmy Logan’s variety shows, and made numerous appearances on radio and television. She later taught at the Drama Department of Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh, directing a number of their productions. The Gateway was gifted to the Church of Scotland by local businessman A.G. Anderson in 1944. Under the stewardship of director Rev George Candlish and manager Sadie Aitken it was officially opened as a theatre in October 1946 showing films and inviting companies such as Perth Theatre, Dundee Rep, Glasgow Citizens, and the Scottish National Players to visit.
