TCHAIKOVSKY COMPETITION 1982 A DIARY BY PETER DONOHOE1 1 The footnotes in this diary are restrospective notes from 2012 – 30 years later... 08 June 1982 Recital at Charlotte Mason College in Ambleside in the British Lake District Program: Tchaikovsky Sonata 2 in G Major (1st Movement) Tchaikovsky November (from The Seasons) Tippett Sonata 2 Prokofiev Sonata 6 ---- Scriabin Etude Op65/3 Chopin Etude Op10/8 Rachmaninov Etude Tableau Op39/5 E flat Minor Bach Prelude and Fugue Book 2 No. 3 Flierkovsky – Prelude and Fugue in G minor Stravinsky Three Movements from Petrushka A very nice, but knowing guy came up to me after the concert, and said “That was a very unusual program. It is almost as if you are preparing to enter the Tchaikovsky Competition.” I asked him to keep it under his hat – it is never good for people to know in advance of your competition efforts, in case it doesn’t work out. Set off home at 11.00 p.m. The car –a Vauxhall Viva borrowed from my parents-in-law – broke down after about 10 miles of a 120 mile journey to my in-laws on the Wirral. Still in the Lake District countryside. The weather was appallingly wet. I had to get to the Wirral, and then the next morning to Manchester for an early flight to London to connect with the Aeroflot flight to Moscow. 09 June 1982 Thank God for the AA Relay service. They got me to the Wirral in the cab of one of their trucks, with the car on the back.

  • The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979
Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections Northwestern University Libraries Dublin Gate Theatre Archive The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979 History: The Dublin Gate Theatre was founded by Hilton Edwards (1903-1982) and Micheál MacLiammóir (1899-1978), two Englishmen who had met touring in Ireland with Anew McMaster's acting company. Edwards was a singer and established Shakespearian actor, and MacLiammóir, actually born Alfred Michael Willmore, had been a noted child actor, then a graphic artist, student of Gaelic, and enthusiast of Celtic culture. Taking their company’s name from Peter Godfrey’s Gate Theatre Studio in London, the young actors' goal was to produce and re-interpret world drama in Dublin, classic and contemporary, providing a new kind of theatre in addition to the established Abbey and its purely Irish plays. Beginning in 1928 in the Peacock Theatre for two seasons, and then in the theatre of the eighteenth century Rotunda Buildings, the two founders, with Edwards as actor, producer and lighting expert, and MacLiammóir as star, costume and scenery designer, along with their supporting board of directors, gave Dublin, and other cities when touring, a long and eclectic list of plays. The Dublin Gate Theatre produced, with their imaginative and innovative style, over 400 different works from Sophocles, Shakespeare, Congreve, Chekhov, Ibsen, O’Neill, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats and many others. They also introduced plays from younger Irish playwrights such as Denis Johnston, Mary Manning, Maura Laverty, Brian Friel, Fr. Desmond Forristal and Micheál MacLiammóir himself. Until his death early in 1978, the year of the Gate’s 50th Anniversary, MacLiammóir wrote, as well as acted and designed for the Gate, plays, revues and three one-man shows, and translated and adapted those of other authors.

The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre.

  • Schools Programme
Schools Programme WELCOME A recent study found that children who regularly attended theatre with their school had higher aspirations and better hopes about their future lives. This news sent my heart soaring as this is what this job is all about! The productions presented this year are surprising and eclectic, taking the spectator along visually interesting pathways. The works include a wide variety of theatrical genres from spoken text to puppetry, from dance theatre and musical explorations to acrobatics. Many of the productions are non-text based making them accessible to a broader audience. Central to the Festival are four exciting shows by Scotland based companies as well as a regional focus on Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern part of Belgium, one of the world’s leaders in producing innovative theatre and dance for young audiences. We have also extended the dates of the Festival to accommodate the increased demand from schools with three international productions opening in the week prior to the main Festival week. In line with our mission, this will allow more children access to high quality theatre. I hope that the 2020 Edinburgh International Children’s Festival is full of special moments for you and your students. Exquisitely theatrical experiences that encourage children and young people to wish, desire and aspire beyond their own lives and immediate neighbourhoods, into their potential future selves. Focus on Flanders supported by: Noel Jordan Festival Director Beyond the Festival: • Creative learning project Imaginate

Alongside runs a vein of comedy and variety, from the ‘Five Past Eight Shows’ of the 1950s at the Citizens’, to regularly playing Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in pantomime during the 1980s and 1990s. There is also a considerable body of television work, from early series such as ‘The Borderers’ and ‘Sutherland’s Law’, and the renowned 1970s adaptation of ‘Sunset Song’, to the long-running Scottish Television soap, ‘High Road’.
