AN ANALYSIS OF RUSSIA’S ‘ALTERNATIVE’ SOFT POWER STRATEGY AND NATIONAL IDENTITY DISCOURSE VIA SPORTS MEGA-EVENTS By NINA KRAMAREVA A Thesis Submitted to The University of Birmingham For the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences University of Birmingham March 2018 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract This thesis seeks to show through both historical and contemporary examples what makes Russia an ‘outlier’ among key sports mega-events hosts. More specifically, this thesis sets out to establish how external and internal objectives Russia pursued in the context of the 1980 Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Olympics differed from those of other sports mega-event hosts, including non-liberal states. The originality of this thesis lies not only in the fact that it sheds light on Russia’s strategy of sports mega-event hosting, but that it does so from the vantage point of the combination of the three most popular approaches in the extant sports mega-event research: public diplomacy, place branding and soft power. Moreover, this study places Russia’s hosting of sports mega-events within constructivist international relations theory, which prioritises identity and interests.

November/December 2006 Issue 9 Sports and Games Visit us at babel.uoregon.edu/globaltalk We all need a sporting chance and Global Talk has given us just that. What other magazine allows faculty and students to bridge the global linguistic divide? And what other publication so deftly illustrates the connections between all the languages spoken in our midst, be they part of our community’s common awareness or lesser known. For this reason, it is my pleas ure to introduce Global Talk’s current issue, dedicated to sport around the world. I do so on behalf of the Scandinav ian section and the department of German and Scandinavian. The Scandinavian languages have been taught at the Un iversity of Oregon since 1899 and Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish are now taught every year, continuin g to be part of a tradition of language instruction here at the U of O. Internat ional competition in sports has become a commonplace event. The first modern Olympic games were held in 1896 in G reece, thereby honoring their origins and it is important to remember that the ancients suspended their hostilities during this time of competition, the “sacred truce.” During this time, no death penalties could be carried out, safe passage was guaranteed, and no armed forces could enter the sanctuary where the games were held. Sport like language, can be a medium that channels agon (competition) creatively rendering differences interesting. My thanks go out to Global Talk and its staff for being the living embodiment of the sacred truce by giving us the chance to sport our differ ences proudly.
