2017 marks an impressive milestone in the Australian design community with the Design Institute of Australia celebrating its 70th year since inception. Locally, we also have cause for celebration, delivering our 25th annual DIA SA/NT Design Awards.

We celebrate not merely due to this longevity, but FROM because collectively we have been working together over this time making our industry stronger and furthering the understanding and acceptance of design, as a requirement for many things in the greater community. Locally and nationally we have been working on changes for the future within the DIA and with all things, it takes time.

Meanwhile we present a survey of wonderful works this year, seeing over 70 entries from a variety of disciplines including many multi skilled designs, crossing boundaries between these disciplines. As an industry I feel we have grown and what may have been illusory boundaries are being dismantled, with practices and individuals taking a larger holistic approach to their works.

The Design Institute of Australia continues its THE commitment to celebrating design excellence through our Awards program – along with other initiatives such as Live Design and our GOTYA, Graduate of the Year program – we strive to shine a light on the world class contribution of local designers.

Over the past 25 years, many awardees have gone on to win national and international acclaim, engaging a much larger audience than our local community. As a group we now have a much stronger voice in our community.

As we look forward we also take this opportunity to look backwards and introduce some of our local icons of design.

PR ESIDE N TThank you to everyone whose effort has contributed to our awards and our industry. Thanks also to all those who entered our 25th awards and congratulations to all the recipients of awards.

Good luck in the year ahead.

Voyage Nicholas Fuller Designer/Maker

These beautiful furniture objects hover between screen and sculpture and have been designed for both commercial and residential use. The pieces combine highly resolved engineering – all concealed in the stone bases – with highly skilled craftsmanship. As its title suggests, the form of this piece is an elegant abstraction of mast and sail and arose from the designer’s imagining of a sea voyage to Tasmania.

From conception to outcome, the judges felt that this was a highly considered project. These limited-edition spectacles are beautifully hand-made with subtle details and interchanging componentry making them unique to each wearer. This is an adaptable, timeless design that can change with the shifting ophthalmic needs of the user. It’s great to see such attention to detail in a piece. 39

Orthopaedic Surgical Depth Gauge John Nicholl

The judges found John’s prototype for a new bone screw depth gauge very innovative. His design development means this important gauge can be used with one hand instead of two, making measurements easier to take, more reliable and quicker to read. The fact that an investment has been made to protect the IP, reinforces the potential value of the concept. It’s impressive to see a student developing such a sophisticated tool, with the potential to simplify such an important and necessary procedure.

Education

Flinders University Student Hub Woods Bagot

A new building is a significant undertaking for any client, but this project carried with it the expectation to change the face of an entire university campus by providing a centre for student life. The project has achieved this, providing a diverse and appropriate range of spaces for both study, relaxation and everything in between. Well thought out and intuitive in its planning, areas have been given identity and definition through the skilled application of materials, finishes and fittings, combined with robust detailing to ensure it can withstand rigorous use. The interior works in harmony with the architecture, each supporting the other. The Jury felt that while this project was set-up for success, it would have also been easy to fail, and in doing so destroy the momentum Flinders University has been building over recent years at the Bedford Park campus. Well used by all since its opening, this project thoroughly provides for the diversity of today’s student cohort and represents leading thinking when it comes to educational spaces for the future. 55

Residential

Adelaide Residence Enoki

An extraordinary home, the Jury was very taken by the absolute quality of both the design, execution and curation of these grand spaces. Budget was evident, but in so far as money doesn’t necessarily buy taste, the budget has been used with consummate skill to create spaces that exuded a richness in detail and finesse and exemplary cohesion and editing. Celebrating commissioned pieces from local craftspeople, the house never feels thematic or confected, and is a tour de force of the Enoki team’s skills. It is clear that an enormous trust has been built up between the designer and a knowledgeable client, and it requires such trust to enable the rigour and bravado to deliver such sophisticated and unique responses to the brief.
