Our founder Venezuelan born, proud Canadian, Ninela Sanchez displayed a love of the stage, acting and performance at the age of three. Her first beauty pageant was Miss Kid Venezuela obtaining the titles as ‘Miss kid Venezuela’ and ‘Miss Petite Venezuela.’ She paved the way for Venezuelan in the American market of children’s pageantry. She then won the tittle Miss Canada Latina in 2014 and represented Canada in Miss Latin America of the World, and Miss Tourism; placing semi-finalist in both international pageants. Ninela also came semi-finalist in Miss Universe Canada 2016. She also came 1st runner up at Miss Galaxy Canada 2019, out of 45 candidates. As an actress, model and dancer she appeared in countless magazines, over 20 commercials, 6 of which were aired nationally, TV Series for Univision Canada and has performed at several charitable nchez events. Sa Ninela Our founder Ninela has taken her passion for film/television/fashion and pageantry to another level. She has hosted for the most important TV Channel in the Latin industry; Univision Canada for the “Hola” & “With you in the community” segments, as well acted live for seasons 1 & 2 of TV kids show “My name is Ripley”.     CHANEL BECKENLEHNER Miss Universe Canada 2014 Chanel Beckenlehner was born and raised in picturesque Caledon, Ontario. She attended the University of Toronto as a Political Science Specialist. Down to earth, positive and approachable, Chanel has dedicated much of her life to giving back to the community by working with several charitable organizations that help orphaned young children by providing food, health care and shelter to families in need. Chanel has a wide variety of hobbies through which she maintains a strong balance between sports and the arts. In her spare time she enjoys trying different culinary experiences, fashion, health and fitness, golfing and traveling the globe experiencing new cultures and languages. She is a strong, confident woman who is not afraid of a challenge. Having elite athlete training in the equestrian sport of Dressage, she understands the winning mindset needed to compete internationally. She surrounds herself with an environment of excellence preparing for competition; her team, coaches and sponsors. She has the confidence, attitude and belief that anything is possible. A natural in front of the camera or on stage, one of her ambitions in life is to pursue an entertainment career, particularly as a television presenter. Obtaining the title of Miss Universe would allow Chanel to bring attention to important issues around the world, especially those that involve women and children. Having spent an entire year studying HIV/AIDS specifically, she feels well prepared, educated and motivated to be a spokesperson for awareness and prevention. Her research efforts have concentrated on women’s health and reproductive issues, the social determinants of health, and the role of power / empowerment, stigma and harm reduction.

In this dissertation, I show how the complexity and tensions of this shift have helped shape, and are reflected in the Nigerian beauty pageant industry. Drawing on a case study of three beauty pageants, two national and one international, I compare the production, symbolism, and political controversies surrounding each pageant and the way it represents the Nigerian nation. I use these cases to argue that national identity exists at multiple levels and is constructed through and towards both national and international audiences. Organizers, contestants, corporate sponsors, fans and opposition groups manage and present the nation through pageants. They negotiate between highlighting cultural diversity within the country and displaying a shared national culture in a global world.
