First “A Farewell Toot” published in 1962, it is the oldest student publication at York University. En plus d’être gratuity, Pro Tem est le seul journal bilingue en Ontario. As a full member of the Canadian University Press, we strive to act as an agent of social change and will not print copy deemed racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise oppressive. You all knew it was coming, the impassioned, refl ective, thank indebted editorial. It’s a tad cliché, but what else can you expect? I admit, I did think about covering a Editor-in-Chief hot news event but it just seemed tacky to leave out a recap on such a successful year. Ashley Beaulac Without further adieu, I’m knocking my hat off to the year, and to you! International Assistant Editor National News Editor Tia Brazda News Editor Ashley Beaulac This year Pro Tem underwent an image overhaul, receiving a major face lift (the Christina Sibian World Politics Editor Campus Life Editor frog and wasp logo ‘frog-de lys’), body restructuring (new sections, professional design Health & Robert Zanfi r Ashley Jestin and layout), a much needed internal lift (relevant articles and great campus coverage), Wellness Editor and sensational implants (a wonderful volunteer team of over 15 dedicated students Crystal Colussi Creative Writing Editor Metropolis Editor Kristjanna Grimmelt Tia Brazda of course!) With this new look and feel Pro Tem held its head up and a bit of a strut Sports Editor appeared. The fi rst Pro Tem Web site was developed; the offi ce was refurnished and open Ammar Jamil Entertainment Editor Arts & Ashley Beaulac Culture Editor to students all year long; and its very fi rst clothing line came out: the ever popular Pro Opinions Editor Pierro Marinatos Tem hoodie. IMMEDIATE RELEASE Miss Universe Canada 2020 Nova Stevens ‘WE*R ONE’… Every Adventure With Love TORONTO, ON (Monday, April 12, 2021) – The reigning Miss Universe Canada Nova Stevens, has evolved from a 6-year-old child migrant fleeing civil war in South Sudan, to being named Miss Universe Canada in 2020. Following this remarkable life journey, Nova is about to embark on another extraordinary quest. Throughout the WE*R ONE adventure, she will visit four countries (USA, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and South Sudan) flying with our Airline partner Ethiopian Airlines, to share her human rights and philanthropic passions, bring a message of unity to South Sudan as a Sudanese-born Canadian, and ultimately reunite with her family - and Mother Africa - after a 21-year separation. Nova would like to share her message of inclusion, love, hope, unity and forgiveness to the people of South Sudan. As a South Sudanese Canadian, Nova wants to bring togetherness. No division amongst tribes, because she believes that “WE* R ONE”. Due to the AIDS pandemic as well as the global pandemic we are currently experiencing, Nova feels that the key to safety is awareness of the need to “know your status” regarding both HIV and COVID- 19. She will also use this opportunity to donate COVID-19 and HIV rapid testing kits to the communities she will visit in Ethiopia and South Sudan. About Nova Stevens: Dynamic, resilient, persistent, and full of life, this is how those who know her best would describe Nova. However, asked to describe herself, Nova would emphasize resiliency and the power of faith in being able to change your circumstances.

Contesting Nationalisms: Gender, Globalization, and Cultural Representation in Nigerian Beauty Pageants By Oluwakemi Monsurat Balogun A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology and in the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Raka Ray, Chair Professor Paola Bacchetta Professor Ann Swidler Professor Barrie Thorne Professor Michael Watts Fall 2012 2012 Copyright Oluwakemi Monsurat Balogun Abstract Contesting Nationalisms: Gender, Globalization, and Cultural Representation in Nigerian Beauty Pageants by Oluwakemi Monsurat Balogun Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology and in the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Raka Ray, Chair Over the last five decades, Nigeria has moved from being a nation enjoying its new post-colonial independence to a nation self-consciously placed within the international political economy. In this dissertation, I show how the complexity and tensions of this shift have helped shape, and are reflected in the Nigerian beauty pageant industry. Drawing on a case study of three beauty pageants, two national and one international, I compare the production, symbolism, and political controversies surrounding each pageant and the way it represents the Nigerian nation. I use these cases to argue that national identity exists at multiple levels and is constructed through and towards both national and international audiences. Organizers, contestants, corporate sponsors, fans and opposition groups manage and present the nation through pageants. They negotiate between highlighting cultural diversity within the country and displaying a shared national culture in a global world.
