Rupkatha Journal on Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities (ISSN 0975-2935) Indexed by Web of Science, Scopus, DOAJ, ERIHPLUS Vol. 13, No. 2, April-June, 2021. 1-12 Full Text: http://rupkatha.com/V13/n2/v13n242.pdf DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.21659/rupkatha.v13n2.42 Published on June 26, 2021 Infidelity to True Story and Novel: Locating the Auteur in Rituparno Ghosh’s Dahan Akaitab Mukherjee Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences and Languages (SSL), Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai Campus, Tamil Nadu, India, [email protected], ORCID id-0000-0001-6410-9898 Abstract Rituparno Ghosh (1961-2013), a celebrated Bengali film director who started making film in 90s, often borrows plots from literary and other cultural narratives. The essay aims to explicate Ghosh’s early film Dahan (1997) which is an adaptation of distinguished Bengali novelist Suchitra Bhattacharya’s novel with the same title. Bhattacharya’s novel is influenced by the real incident in which a couple was harassed by four youths at Tollygunge Metro Station in Kolkata on 27th November, 1992. The film also acknowledges that it is indebted to the true story. The essay explicates the adaptation of the two sources by the auteur. It examines the duplication of authorial concerns in this adaptation while following the narratives of two texts. Ghosh remains unfaithful to the literary text and the cultural memory of the true story to establish his authorship. As Ghosh’s films portray the middle class women in patriarchal society, following Janet Staiger’s reconsideration of the theory of auteur in the context of queer movement and identity politics in 1970s, the essay argues that the performance of infidelity to the literary and true story to establish authorship is auteur’s “technique of the self”.

Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

After a month of quietly asking the government for help, the farmers took matters into their own hands. Unable to meet the Prime Minister to present their demands, the farmers began dramatic forms of protest, which included rolling on the road, demonstrating with dead rats and snakes in their mouths and even taking off their clothes to get attention for their problems. Why are they protesting? Last year during October to December, the north-east monsoon was a fail- ure, and as a result many farmers in Tamil Nadu lost their crops. Before that summer crops were affected as Karnataka refused to release River Cauvery’s water for Tamil Nadu’s farmers. With crops lost and no money, many farm- ers killed themselves. More than 100 farmers died between October and De- cember 2016. These farmers want the government to give them money to tide over the problem. They also want help in repaying loans they took for buying seeds and farm machinery. Without rain, the land has turned dry in some parts of Tamil Nadu. It is a critical-historical account of the transitional era, roughly from 1998 to 2018, and examines practices and decisions taken ‘on the ground’ by film sound recordists, editors, designers and mixers. My work explores the histories and genealogies of the transition by analysing the individual, as well as collective, aesthetic concerns of film workers migrating from the celluloid to the digital age. My inquiry aimed to explore linkages between the digital turn and shifts in production practices, notably sound recording, sound design and sound mixing. The study probes the various ways in which these shifts shaped the aesthetics, styles, genre conventions, and norms of image-sound relationships in Indian cinema in comparison with similar practices from Euro-American film industries.
