After a month of quietly asking the government for help, the farmers took matters into their own hands. Unable to meet the Prime Minister to present their demands, the farmers began dramatic forms of protest, which included rolling on the road, demonstrating with dead rats and snakes in their mouths and even taking off their clothes to get attention for their problems. Why are they protesting? Last year during October to December, the north-east monsoon was a fail- ure, and as a result many farmers in Tamil Nadu lost their crops. Before that summer crops were affected as Karnataka refused to release River Cauvery’s water for Tamil Nadu’s farmers. With crops lost and no money, many farm- ers killed themselves. More than 100 farmers died between October and De- cember 2016. These farmers want the government to give them money to tide over the problem. They also want help in repaying loans they took for buying seeds and farm machinery. Without rain, the land has turned dry in some parts of Tamil Nadu. The Uttar Pradesh model Farmers in Tamil Nadu are looking to the government in Delhi for help be- has recently agreed to a ‘loan waiver’ in Uttar Pradesh (UP), a state that is cause the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which runs the central government, also run by the BJP. In UP, the government has promised to put aside loans taken by small farmers-this means the farmers won’t have to repay loans taken from government banks. The UP move is having an effect on other states as well. Farmers in Punjab and Maharashtra would also like the government to help them pay off loans. Is this a good idea? Experts say “No” Small farmers typically take money from local moneylenders and not banks. As a result, they won’t benefit from the UP government’s move, say experts. Plus it is going to cost the government a lot of money to pay back these loans, which is not good news. Experts say it would be a smarter idea to help farm- ers cultivate crops better by providing seeds and tools and earn more from their existing lands.

Why are farm loans important to us? Farmers grow our food, so anything concerning farmers affects all of us. If farmers are in trouble, it could affect our food supply. Tamil Nadu farmers took to unique ways to show that they had lost all and had nothing else to eat ‘

The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind can- not stay in the cradle forever. Features —Konstantin Tsiolkovsky CHILD FRIENDLY NEWS 13 April 2017 2 www.childfriendlynews.com Fluorescent‘ frog discovered Have you played with glow-in-the-dark toys? Enjoyed the way they just seem to glow with a magical light of their own? This effect is called fluorescence. Did you know that many animals are also fluorescent and glow in the dark? In fact, the world’s first fluorescent frog-the Polka-dot Tree Frog-has been discovered in the South American country of Argentina. In normal light the frog appears to have a dull, mottled brown-green skin with red dots, but under ultraviolet (UV) light, it glows a bright fluorescent green.

What’s fluorescence? Light travels in waves. Fluorescence is the ability to absorb light of short wavelengths and re-emit it in longer wavelengths. When light from an ul- traviolent lamp or torch falls on a fluorescent object, it bounces back almost immediately. During the bounce-back, some energy is lost-therefore, the light rays that are bounced back are longer than the original light waves that hit the object. This causes the object to glow, creating the fluorescent effect. Fluorescence is an effect seen in underwater creatures but not so often seen in animals that live on land. That is why the discovery of the Polka-dot Tree Frog in South America is important-this is in fact the first time that a fluo- rescent frog has been discovered.

War is the greatest plague that can afflict humanity, News it destroys religion, it destroys states, it destroys CHILD FRIENDLY NEWS families. Any scourge is preferable to it. 13 April 2017 —Martin Luther 6 www.childfriendlynews.com WORLD ‘ War in Syria heats up The West Asian country of Syria has been in a state of war for six years. Its government is fighting against a group of rebels who want to over- throw the government and rule the country. In the past two weeks, this fight has become more intense-it appears that the government is at- tacking the rebels with chemical weapons while the rebels supported by the United States (US) have bombed an airport controlled by the gov- ernment. Chemical weapons use poisonous chemicals to harm and hurt people. In Syria, chemical weapons released from an aircraft gave off a poison- ous gas that affected hundreds of people. Many people, including chil- dren were killed due to the gas. Countries such as the United States believe the chemical weapons were used on the orders of the Syrian government. In response, the United States bombed (targeted bombs at) an airport from which the planes carrying the chemical weapons were said to have taken off. The Syrian government has said it had not used the chemical weapons but not everyone is believing this. As countries continue to argue, the war in Syria is tearing the country apart. Children have lost homes, their neighbourhoods and in some cases even their parents. War, as they say, brings nothing good along with it.

WORLD INDIA Earth-like planet may have atmosphere Why China is angry with the Dalai Lama The Dalai Lama, one of the most important Buddhist leaders in the world, visited the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh last week and his presence there made China very, very angry. India’s neighbour even threatened action against India for allowing the Dalai Lama into an area that China is claiming as its own. The Dalai Lama is the head of the Tibetan Buddhists. Many years ago, when China took over Tibet, he escaped to India and he and his follow- ers live in Himachal Pradesh. China would like the world to forget that Tibet was once an independent country and therefore considers the Dalai Lama its enemy. China and India share an uneasy (not so good) relationship. China claims that part of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to it but naturally India does not believe this. The Dalai Lama’s visit to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, which is very close to Tibet, angered China. China threatened India with action unless India stopped the Dalai Lama but India al- lowed him to travel to Tawang. It’s not clear what kind of action China will take but clearly India and China will not be celebrating ‘Friendship 39 light years away from Earth is a planet like ours that appears to have an at- Day’ any time soon. mosphere. The atmosphere is the layer of gas that surrounds Earth and it is the atmosphere that makes it possible for life to occur on Earth. The planet, called GJ 1132b, is about one and a half times the size of Earth and it orbits (goes around) a dwarf star (refers to a star that is much smaller and less bright than our Sun) in the constellation of Vela. The planet passes in front of its star every one and a half days. As it does, the star becomes slightly fainter (less bright) as the planet and its atmosphere block the light. Scientists working in Germany took images of this. The amount of light blocked helped them work out that the planet GJ 1132b had an atmos- phere. Studies by the scientists indicate that the planet may be a ‘water-world’ with an atmosphere of hot steam. It may also be rich in methane, a gas that is an in- dication of life on the planet. While the count has already begun in eastern India, it will hap- pen in the four southern states in May 2017. The elephant species found in India is the Asian Elephant. During the last count, held in 2012, around 29,000-30,000 elephants were counted in India. This year, the count was held in the north-east- ern states and Bengal at the end of March. The four southern states- Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh-will do the count in May. The count is being done at the same time in the north-east and southern India clusters (states that are next to each other) so that migrating elephants are not counted twice. In addition to counting elephants, the study will also look at ways in How are elephants counted? which humans are coming into conflict with these wild animals.
