  • Developing Small Forwards by Mike Procopio
Developing Small Forwards By Mike Procopio The Small Forward is very similar to a shooting guard as far as the skills that need to be developed. Usually the small forward is bigger than the shooting guard, which will open up more opportunities on both ends of the floor. Small forwards tend to handle the ball more in the offense than shooting guards do unless their team starts a combo guard or multiple point guards in the rotation. Most of your routine that you develop for a small forward workout should be similar than the drills used form the shooting guard workout. Where the workouts differ is the amount of screen and roll and offense off of the dribble should be increased in the small forward workout. Also, if the small forward that you are working with is bigger say 6'5 or taller at the high school/ college level or 6'6 or taller at the pro level a lot of post work should be incorporated in the routine. Opening Developing a small forward is like developing a point guard, shooting guard, and post player all in one. A small forward needs to know how to clear their defender so when you start working on off the dribble offense emphasize going somewhere with the dribble. Repetitions just like any position is very important with their mid and deep ranged jumpers. A player's physical traits (size, athletic ability, and skill) has a big impact on the workout that you put them through. Don't cookie cut your small forward workout for all small forwards.

  • How to Play Basketball Offense - Description of Team Positions
How to Play Basketball Offense - Description of Team Positions Over the years, as shooting, passing, and dribbling have become more sophisticated, offensive alignments have changed. They probably will continue changing in the future. Rule changes often dictate this. For example, take the three-point shot. This is changing the philosophy of a lot of coaches. Previous to the three-point shot, big men were dominating the game. Teams constantly looked for ONLY a close-in shot. As a result, most defenses packed back in tight. The three-point shot is changing all this. This new rule has opened up the game. Defenses must come out. It is quite common to see coaches using 3 and 4 guard offenses. Some of them even have their offensive teams and defensive teams, substituting freely to suit the particular need. Fundamentals, however, remain much as they were 40 years ago. Things that worked then, still work today. The terminology used to describe offensive alignments are different than they were 40 years ago. Some team offenses have evolved so that every player must be able to play at any and all positions. The flex offense is an example. Yet, this type offense is over 30 years old. Us old timers called it "the shuffle." In either offense, the center often finds himself out at a guard position. This type offense is well suited for today's rules; however, adjustments are made to fit the abilities of available players. High school coaches always have to adapt. College coaches simply recruit the players to fill a void.

Whether it differs among the basketball players who compete at the world basketball championship (FIBA-WC) is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between the basketball players from the teams ranked 1–16 and those ranked below 16th place. The body heights of all players from the last three FIBA-WCs were collected and allocated according to the ranking at the FIBA-WC and analyzed by position in team. An independent sample t-test was conducted to analyze the difference in body height of players ranked 1–16 and players who ranked below 16th place.

  • In December the DCCCP Teen Team Had the Pleasure of Speaking with NBA Champion Derek Anderson
In December the DCCCP Teen Team had the pleasure of speaking with NBA Champion Derek Anderson. Here are some highlights from there exciting conversation! Derek Anderson—NBA Champion Position: Shooting Guard, Small Forward, Point Guard) College: University of Kentucky NBA Draft: Round 1: Pick 13 (1997 by the Cleveland Cavaliers) NBA Career: 1997 - 2008 Career Highlights: NCAA Champion (1996/Kentucky), NBA Champion (2006/Miami Heat) Teen Team: What was your best and worst experience in the NBA? Derek Anderson: My best experience was with the San Antonio Spurs—it felt like a family. My worst experience was with the L.A. Clippers; at times I asked myself, "Do I have to go to work today?" It was pretty bad! TT: When you were a teen, what separated you from others who may have had aspirations to achieve big goals? DA: They all made excuses for their lives and I wanted to change mine. I never made excuses; I never complained; I only worked to better myself. I was homeless at age 11 and became a millionaire at the age of 22. TT: What was it like being one of the first athletes signed by Michael Jordan to Brand Jordan? DA: It's interesting. Michael Jordan told me that he had been watching me for years while I played for the University of Kentucky. He told me that the reason he signed me was because he admired the way that I dealt with adversity. So I signed a life-long contract with Michael Jordan because of my attitude, not because of my basketball abilities.

  • Understanding Player Positions in the NBA
Understanding Player Positions in the NBA Luke Lefebure Stanford University [email protected] December 12, 2014 Abstract To better understand the meaning of positions in the NBA, I train several models to predict a player's position from his stats, such as average speed on the court and number of three point attempts per game. The NBA and ESPN use different position labels, so I compare the performance of my models in predicting these labels separately. Ultimately, I hope that this analysis can determine how well position labels describe NBA player roles and identify the defining characteristics of each position. 1 Introduction Basketball is a unique sport in that there are no position specific rules or statistics. All players are traditionally measured by the number of rebounds, blocks, and steals they get on defense and the number of points they score, passes they make, and assists they get on offense. Therefore, position labels can be somewhat ambiguous: the NBA classifies players as either a Guard, Guard-Forward, Forward, Forward-Center, or Center, and ESPN classifies players as either a Point Guard, Shooting Guard, Small Forward, Power Forward, or Center. This has led some to do cluster analysis on NBA players to discover more and "new" positions other than the traditional five [1]. The goal of this analysis is to determine how well existing position labels actually describe a player's game. This is done by building models to predict position label from player stats. I consider two different position labeling schemes, namely those given by the NBA and ESPN, and compare model performance in predicting these labels separately.
