BASI,The British Association of Snowsport Instructors, is the UK’s national training and grading provider for snowsport instructing qualifications. BASI offer three official gap courses in France. This means every day and each activity during the 10 week gap course follows BASI’s own gap syllabus and quality standards. If it’s not a BASI gap course, you just don’t have this quality assurance. PART OF A WORKING SKI SCHOOL New Generation is a working ski school voted No.1 Ski School by ‘Which Books’ and the Snow Awards. We have ski schools in 10 resorts across the Alps and teach over 15,000 clients a year. As one of our gap students you are part of this ski school and will shadow our own ski school lessons. FIRST STEP ON THE PATHWAY TO A SUCCESSFUL INSTRUCTOR CAREER Our gap course aims to prepare students for their BASI Level 2 qualification which allows you to teach beginners to ski. Many students start paid work soon after finishing the course. However we also try to lay the groundwork for further ski instructor training and ultimately a career in the ski industry. We run training courses for all instructor qualification levels and The BASI gap course is the first step on this journey. THE BIGGEST SKI AREA IN THE WORLD Meribel & Courchevel are huge ski areas in themselves as well as being part of the Trois Vallees Ski area - the largest ski area in the world. The terrain varies from beautifully groomed pistes (perfect for learning to teach on) to steep couloirs and challenging off-piste runs. AND... DOn’T FORGET YOUR FREE FREERIDE JACKET Every student receives a fantastic freeride jacket (a black decagon) from The North Face. 3 ww w.skinewgen.com Introduction to the course The New Generation gap course is great fun, yet hard work. Whilst attending the gap course you are in a snowsport environment 100% of the time. The intention is for all students to be immersed in the culture and way of life of a snowsport instructor and to be totally focused on the outcome. The gap course is a fantastic opportunity to obtain a British ski instructor qualification in just ten weeks. All of our students take their BASI Ski Instructor exams as part of the gap course. Our gap courses are based in Courchevel, La Tania and Méribel, all part of the Trois Vallees - the world’s biggest ski area. All students receive expert coaching from New Generation’s top BASI Trainers. As well as on-snow coaching, training includes evening sessions and use of video. Each student is assigned a mentor who will look after the students on and off the snow, ensuring a gap experience they will remember for life. Students have ample opportunity to experience the social side of ski life. A visit to Dick’s Tea Bar and the Rond Point are an absolute must. AND... DOn’T FORGET YOUR FREE FREERIDE JACKET Every student receives a fantastic freeride jacket (a black decagon) from The North Face. 4 ww w.skinewgen.com Are you the right standard for the course? The BASI standard of entry to the gap course is to: 1. Be able to ski parallel confidently, coping with a variety of conditions, and have completed a number of weeks skiing on snow. 2. Ski parallel confidently on black runs, being able to make rhythmical turns close to the fall line at a steady pace. 3. Confident skiing in control in off piste conditions. You may be asked to attend a pre-assessment to ensure your skiing is at the required level before the course starts. We hold pre- assessments as part of our open days at snow domes in the UK. If you would like to attend please contact us on the details below. Open days If you are interested in becoming a ski instructor then you can attend our free open days at one of the UK indoor ski centres. The open days are a great way to meet our training team, ask questions, and for our trainers to assess your skiing level to ensure that you are of a suitable level to start the course. Open day programme: Welcome & introduction Ski with a trainer Ski instructor programme Question and answer session TALK TO ONE OF OUR TRAINERS. CALL 0844 770 4733 OR EMAIL [email protected] 5 ww w.skinewgen.com Our course mentors Each student is allocated a mentor to train and guide them through the course. Our mentors are Level 4 ISTD BASI instructors, the highest BASI level. Performance ski coaching The mentors provide performance ski coaching, working with a BASI trainer to shape their training techniques to ensure students are on track for their exams. They give each student a written action plan for their skiing and teaching which is continuously updated during the course. All this follows our Individual Development Assistance Programme which you can read about on page 13. Off snow they will provide video analysis and feedback, as well as the necessary training on ski theory, resentation skills and teaching. We find that the mentor system allows us to follow a student’s progression closely, and individual help and support for all aspects of the course. TOM, BARNEY AND SAM ARE THE COURCHEVEL MENTORS FOR THE 2013 GAP COURSE 6 ww w.skinewgen.com Shadowing As part of the course students shadow our in house ski school lessons. Lessons will be for adults or children and from beginners through to advanced skiers. We make sure that they are exposed to different types of lesson so that they are able to learn some secrets about great teaching and receive first hand work experience of a ski school. All students will keep a log book while shadowing to help with their own lesson plans. 7 ww w.skinewgen.com Careers seminar and support During the course we run a careers seminar. This is an introduction from leading snow sports instructors on moving forward within the industry. A summary of the BASI system and its requirements beyond level 2 is also provided. Students will hear from different ski schools talking about what they look for in an instructor. They can get help with CV writing, and are provided a list of our main recruitment and career contacts gathered over years in the industry in order to make sure that they have good prospects following the course. On successful completion of the course we can arrange for students to work in a ski school for the week – ask our course advisers for more details. Off snow care Living in a ski resort is so much easier when you have a little background knowledge of the resort. To help students with the non-skiing aspects of the course we have Nicki (AKA ‘Mum’) on hand to help out. Nicki is always at the end of the phone during the course to answer questions and solve any issues. This help can be anything from showing where the chemist is to helping with CV writing.

PRESS PACK WINTER 2020 / 2021 savoie mont blanc Located between lakes and mountains, Savoie Mont Blanc is a beautiful area for a winter break. Savoie Mont Blanc has 110 ski resorts, including some world-famous ones such as Val d’Isère, Méribel, Courchevel, Chamonix… and many more. But there are also some smaller ones, which are not well-known by British skiers. This winter could be the ideal time to visit a smaller resort for alpine skiing and also to try some other winter sport activities, such as cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. These eco-friendly activities are the perfect way to peacefully enjoy the beautiful vistas and the pure mountain air, while coming back super-fit from your holiday. If you opt for slow travel, why not stop for a few nights before or after going to a ski resort? There are many charming hotels in the pretty towns of Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains and Annecy, as well as by the lakes and in the vineyards. In the valleys and mountains, more and more hotels and residences are eco-friendly. This sustainable trend is being taken up by restaurants too, which are offering more and more organic, local and seasonal produce. Whatever type of winter holiday you choose, Savoie Mont Blanc is the perfect place to reboot and feel re-energised once back home. Savoie Mont Blanc is easy to access by plane (airports include Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva) and car. Although there is no Snowtrain this winter, Savoie Mont Blanc is still easily accessible by train: take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, then the TGV to Chambéry or Annecy (it takes less than 3 hours from Paris to Chambéry and less than 4 hours for Annecy).
