PRESS PACK WINTER 2020 / 2021 savoie mont blanc Located between lakes and mountains, Savoie Mont Blanc is a beautiful area for a winter break. Savoie Mont Blanc has 110 ski resorts, including some world-famous ones such as Val d’Isère, Méribel, Courchevel, Chamonix… and many more. But there are also some smaller ones, which are not well-known by British skiers. This winter could be the ideal time to visit a smaller resort for alpine skiing and also to try some other winter sport activities, such as cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. These eco-friendly activities are the perfect way to peacefully enjoy the beautiful vistas and the pure mountain air, while coming back super-fit from your holiday. If you opt for slow travel, why not stop for a few nights before or after going to a ski resort? There are many charming hotels in the pretty towns of Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains and Annecy, as well as by the lakes and in the vineyards. In the valleys and mountains, more and more hotels and residences are eco-friendly. This sustainable trend is being taken up by restaurants too, which are offering more and more organic, local and seasonal produce. Whatever type of winter holiday you choose, Savoie Mont Blanc is the perfect place to reboot and feel re-energised once back home. Savoie Mont Blanc is easy to access by plane (airports include Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva) and car. Although there is no Snowtrain this winter, Savoie Mont Blanc is still easily accessible by train: take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, then the TGV to Chambéry or Annecy (it takes less than 3 hours from Paris to Chambéry and less than 4 hours for Annecy).

Effects of ski lift ticket discounts on local tourism demand Martin Falk and Miriam Scaglione Martin Falk is Senior Abstract Research Fellow at the Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a first evaluation of the effectiveness of the early bird Austrian Institute of discount on ski lift tickets by estimating the impact on hotel overnight stays of the Saas-Fee destination. Economic Research Design/methodology/approach – The difference-in-differences (DID) approach is used to compare (WIFO) Vienna, Austria. winter sport destinations with and without the price reduction before and after the introduction of the price Miriam Scaglione is discount. The sample is composed of the 54 largest Swiss winter sport destinations for the seasons 2013/ Professor at the Institute of 2014 and 2016/2017. Tourism, University of Findings – DID estimations show an increase in overnight stays of Swiss residents by 50 per cent as Applied Sciences and Arts compared to the control group. Quantile regression estimations for the conditional upper part of the Western Switzerland – overnight stays distribution reveal a lower average treatment effect of 38 per cent. However, DID – – Valais, Sierre, Switzerland. estimates for total overnight stays (domestic and foreign) are much smaller about 17 per cent indicating that the price reductions are not effective in attracting foreign visitors. Results are not sensitive when taking into account a large number of control variables (elevation, size and snow making capacity). Research limitations/implications – As tourists visiting winter sport destinations are interested in a mix of activities, lift ticket revenues or number of skier days should be used as an alternative outcome measure.
