No. 14. 20 pp. Adlerz hat Gelegenheit gehabt Ceropales unter so günstigen Umständen zu beobachten, daß er bisher noch nicht bekannte Auf- schlüsse geben kann über den Platz des Ceropales-Eies, über das Ver- hältnis, in welchem die Ceropaleslarve zur Pompiluslarve steht u. eine Erklärung für die absonderliche Bildung des letzten Bauchringes des Ceropales-Weibchens. Die Angaben dienen teils zur Bestätigung, teils zur Vervollständigung der Mitteilungen Ferton's. Das Ceropales-Weibchen lauert auf den mit der Spinne an- kommenden Pompilus, der eine Ahnung von den Absichten des Gegners hat. Oft mit großer Heftigkeit stürzt C. auf die Spinne zu, u. legt, falls es ihm gelingt den P. zu vertreiben, sein Ei an dieselbe ab, an einen ganz besonderen Ort, nämlich in die spaltenförmigen Stigmen, welche in die Lungensäckchen führen. Es wurde auch be- obachtet, daß das Weibchen vor Ungeduld nachsah, wie weit der P. mit seiner Höhle fertig ist, um eine Beutespinne zu holen. Durch die Art des Versteckens ist das Ei vollständig gegen Insulte beim Transport der Spinne gesichert. Zuweilen wurden 2 Eier abgelegt, in jede Tasche eins. Der als kurze, platte, abgestutzte Stachelscheide umgeformte letzte Bauchring des C. -Weibchens hat offenbar seine Form den schmal spaltenförmigen Stigmen der Spinne angepaßt. — Der weitere Verlauf des Dramas wurde an Züchtungsversuchen beobachtet. Nach einer Embryonalzeit von 2—3 Tagen schlüpft die C. -Larve. Der Vorderteil der jungen Larve ragt bis auf das 10. Segment aus dem Stigma gerade hervor. Bald biegt sie den Kopf herunter, bis sie den Bauch der Spinne erreicht, woselbst sie zu fressen beginnt. Ist eine zweite Ceropales Arch. f. Naturgesch. 70. Jahvg. 1904. Bd. II. Sie hört auf zu fressen, streckt sich u. wenn sie infolge der aufgenommenen Nahrung so weit gewachsen ist, daß sie die Rivalin erreichen kann, frißt sie auf dieser weiter. Nach Beseitigung des Gegners frißt sie an der Spinne weiter. Ist inzwischen aus dem an der Seitenfläche des Hinterleibes abgelegten Ei des Pompilus die Larve ausgekrochen, beginnt das Spiel von neuem, bis auch deren Schicksal besiegelt ist. Dann wird die Spinne bis auf geringe ungenießbare Reste verzehrt. Es wird hierauf ein Maschenwerk von hellbraunen Fäden gesponnen und in diesem im Laufe der nächstfolgenden Tage der lichtbraune Kokon verfertigt. Freßzeit der Larve im beobachteten Falle 12 Tage. — (2). Myrmecologisca studier IV. Titel p. 289 des Berichts f. 1902. Beschreibt eine neue Formica-Art aus Schweden, welche bisher nur auf der Insel Alnö im Bottnischen Meerbusen, unweit Sundswall gefunden wurde. (Vorläufige Mitteilung). Plateau stellt, wie aus seinen Schriften (1895—1902) ersichtlich ist, einen Farbensinn der Insekten in Abrede, schreibt ihnen aber einen um so größeren Geruchssinn zu. A. ist auf Grund seiner Versuche u. Beobachtungen gezwungen sich anders als PL zu der Frage zu stellen: „Wie locken die Blumen die Insekten an." Man muß zunächst unterscheiden zwischen biologisch niederen und hochorganisierten Insekten. Jene sind charakterisiert durch einen beständig sich ändernden oder kurzen Flug, der veranlaßt wird von einem labilen, von den Atmosphärilien abhängenden Duft; diese hingegen richten sich nach einem stabilen, farbenprächtigen Gegenstande u. sind vor- wiegend durch direkten Flug charakterisiert. Daraus folgt, daß niedere Insekten auf Entfernungen hin vom Dufte, in der Nähe von der Farbe geleitet werden; reziprok wird dieses Verhältnis bei den höher ent- wickelten Formen. Flügellose Insekten sind farbenblind (Formicidae) u. werden lediglich durch den Spürsinn geleitet (Siphonaptera). Ver- treter der niederen Formen sind : Sphingidae (Sphinx convolvuli, etc.) u. von den uns hier interessierenden Hymenoptera Prosopis u. Anthrena. Zu den hochentwickelten Formen zählen Apis, Osmia, Anthophora, Anthidium, Bombus. Dementsprechend sind die farbenprächtigen Blüten u. die Blütenstände wenig riechender

Towards simultaneous analysis of molecular and morphological data in Hymenoptera. Ð Zoologica Scripta 28, 251±260. Principles and methods of simultaneous analysis in cladistics are reviewed, and the first, preliminary, analysis of combined molecular and morphological data on higher level relationships in Hymenoptera is presented to exemplify these principles. The morphological data from Ronquist et al. (in press) matrix, derived from the character diagnoses of the phylogenetic tree of Rasnitsyn (1988), are combined with new molecular data for representatives of 10 superfamilies of Hymenoptera by means of optimization alignment. The resulting cladogram supports Apocrita and Aculeata as groups, and the superfamly Chrysidoidea, but not Chalcidoidea, Evanioidea, Vespoidea and Apoidea. James M. The cleptoparasite (adult and larvae) show many morphological and behavior adaptations to this life style. In this paper I present some data on the cleptoparasite bees whose hosts are bees specialized to collect floral oil. PARVIFLORUM , AND THEIR HYBRIDS IN SOUTHERN MANITOBA by Melissa Anne Pearn A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE Department of Biological Sciences University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright 2012 by Melissa Pearn ABSTRACT I investigated how orchid biology, floral morphology, and diversity of surrounding floral and pollinator communities affected reproductive success and hybridization of Cypripedium candidum and C. parviflorum . Floral dimensions, including pollinator exit routes were smallest in C. candidum , largest in C. parviflorum , with hybrids intermediate and overlapping with both. This pattern was mirrored in the number of insect visitors, fruit set, and seed set. Exit route size seemed to restrict potential pollinators to a subset of visiting insects, which is consistent with reports from other rewardless orchids. Overlap among orchid taxa in morphology, pollinators, flowering phenology, and spatial distribution, may affect the frequency and direction of pollen transfer and hybridization. The composition and abundance of co-flowering rewarding plants seems to be important for maintaining pollinators in orchid populations. Comparisons with orchid fruit set indicated that individual co-flowering species may be facilitators or competitors for pollinator attention, affecting orchid reproductive success. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Throughout my master’s research, I benefited from the help and support of many great people. SCHMID-EGGER Abstract: Two large samples from Sicily and Malta are revised. They include 126 species from Sicily, 19 species of them are new for the fauna of Sicily: Astata gallica, Belomicrus italicus, Crabro peltarius bilbaoensis, Crossocerus podagricus, Gorytes procrustes, Lindenius albilabris, Lindenius laevis, Passaloecus pictus, Pemphredon austrica, Pemphredon lugubris, Rhopalum clavipes, Spilomena troglodytes, Stigmus solskyi, Synnevrus decemmaculatus, Tachysphex julliani, Trypoxylon kolazyi, Trypoxylon medium. Miscophus mavromoustakisi, found in Sicily, is also new for the fauna of Italy. A species of the genus Synnevrus is probably unknown to science. The total number of species in Sicily is 217 now. Zoogeographical aspects are discussed. Most of the recorded species are by origin from central or southern Europe. A few species have an eastern, resp. western Mediterranean distribution pattern. A species is a northern African element. Key words: Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Sphecidae, Crabronidae, Sicily, Italy, Malta, fauna, zoogeographical aspects, endemism. Introduction The fauna of Sphecidae from Sicily was never treated in a special publication. PAGLIANO (1990), in his catalogue of the Sphecidae from Italy, was the first who listed all published records of Sphecidae from Sicily. NEGRISOLO (1995) completed the listing in the ‘Checklist della specie della fauna Italiana’. He listed 186 species names, and some subspecies names from Sicily. Nevertheless, the fauna of Sicily is far from being completely known. I had the opportunity to examine two large collections from Sicily. Bernhard Merz collected in June 1999 Diptera at Sicily and Malta and took also many Aculeate with him.

The aculeate fauna (excluding Formicidae, Apidae s.str- Andrenidae, and Halictidae) was surveyed in the Ridd arghipei-ago nature reserve (19 km2) and the small adjacent mainland area Solbacken (0.5 km2). The-Ridi, archipelago is characterized by a mosaic of deciduous forests (including some of nearly primeval type), coniferous forests, wet and d-ry meadows, grazing ground. grazing marshes, and parkland. During 1982 - 1990. a total of I 139 specimens iere c-ollected ii the alchipelago and more than 2000 specimens at Solbacken. 222 species (45 Vo of the Swedish fauna) arelepresented in the material ( I 50 species from the archipelago). Of the species found, 35 occur on red data lists from Britain and/or Central Eurgpe.. The wood-neiting fauna was the richest. Wood-nesting sphecid wasps were_represented by.57 species (72 4o of the wood-nesting Swedish faunaj, a figure that outnumbe-rs most Swedish piovinces (including SkAne. Oland and Gotland) and equ_als_the lqTlgr of Danish. spec-ies. bf-wood-nesting eumenid wasps and megachilid bees, 63Vo and 8lo/o, respectively, of all Swedish wood-iesting species were found. The richness of the wood-nesting aculeate fauna is probably related to the wealth of dead trees and fallen logs, the rich flora of flowe-ring plants, ttui exceptionally mild and dry local climate, and a continuous influence from ireighbouring populationi.
