  • Marie Grosholtz: Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum
Marie Grosholtz: Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum Madame Tussauds Wax Museums can be found throughout the world. The history of Marie Grosholtz, better known by her married name, Madame Tussaud, is quite interesting. (Note: The apostrophe in Tussaud’s is no longer used.) Wax figures of effigies were not new, especially during the French revolution in the later 1700s. Marie Grosholtz was born in 1761. She was born in eastern France, Strasbourg. Marie’s father was a German soldier Marie’s father suffered a facial disfigurement in the wars he fought during the Seven Years’ War (1756‐1763). He was killed two months before Marie was born. The Seven Year’s War was a global conflict. It especially involved Britain and France. The war destroyed France’s supremacy in Europe, which eventually led to revolt and the overthrow of the monarchy. The French Revolution began in 1789. <historytoday.com> Marie’s mother, Anne Marie, moved and brought her up in Berne, Switzerland. Her mother was a housekeeper for Philippe Curtius. He was a doctor who also modeled wax heads and busts and ran a museum in Berne. Curtius with Marie and her mother moved to Paris. Curtius’ wax art became quite popular with the aristocrats. Marie learned the craft from Philippe and later became his assistant. She also served as an art tutor at Versailles to the sister of Louis XVI. <britanica.com> <historytoday.com> Upon the death of Phillippe Curtius in 1794, Marie inherited two of his museums. At that point in history, modeling death masks was common. Marie’s first wax figure was that of Voltaire.

SILVER SPRINGS: THE FLORIDA INTERIOR IN THE AMERICAN IMAGINATION By THOMAS R. BERSON A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2011 1 © 2011 Thomas R. Berson 2 To Mom and Dad Now you can finally tell everyone that your son is a doctor. 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank my entire committee for their thoughtful comments, critiques, and overall consideration. The chair, Dr. Jack E. Davis, has earned my unending gratitude both for his patience and for putting me—and keeping me—on track toward a final product of which I can be proud. Many members of the faculty of the Department of History were very supportive throughout my time at the University of Florida. Also, this would have been a far less rewarding experience were it not for many of my colleagues and classmates in the graduate program. I also am indebted to the outstanding administrative staff of the Department of History for their tireless efforts in keeping me enrolled and on track. I thank all involved for the opportunity and for the ongoing support. The Ray and Mitchum families, the Cheatoms, Jim Buckner, David Cook, and Tim Hollis all graciously gave of their time and hospitality to help me with this work, as did the DeBary family at the Marion County Museum of History and Scott Mitchell at the Silver River Museum and Environmental Center. David Breslauer has my gratitude for providing a copy of his book.

V&A Innovative Leadership 2015/16 Programme 14th October 2015 - 20th July 2016 What participants say: “The innovative course is an excellent opportunity to take time out from usual hectic schedules to take stock and focus on vital leadership and management self-development. It also provides tools and material that have immediate value in terms of supporting solutions for organisational challenges, and long term sustainability.” “The programme provided the opportunity I had been looking for – time away from the day job to think hard about my practice as a museum professional, and in turn for my teams. I have come away from the programme inspired.” "In just a year I feel I have come a long way which is what I had hoped when I started the course. The course helped build my confidence and has made me realise my potential. It gave me the confidence to go for a promotion which I have since got." "This programme is refreshingly different from other offers in the UK in going beyond bite-sized management information: management and leadership are explored through inspirational lectures by leaders who provide an authentic insight into their work; several real-life assignments at the V&A and other culture institutions gave my fellow participants and me ample opportunity to practice and gain experience. I have met extraordinary people from institutions across the country, and formed strong links. The action learning sets have been one of the key ingredients in my opinion. My action learning set continues to meet: we learn from each other, and grow together." “It has improved my confidence which has in turn improved my effectiveness in dealing with challenging situations.
