38 2010BHAKU Embry-Riddle ERAUmono7.5x10".indd Volleyball 1 Media Guide 9/21/07 3:57:00 PM THIS IS DAYTONA BEACH Daytona Beach has something for everyone -- the adventure of a city and the warmth, charm, and friendly atmosphere of a small town. One of Florida’s primary tourist destinations, Daytona Beach is located on the central east coast of Florida and is known as the World’s Most Famous Beach. If you like to camp or backpack, you’ll enjoy the 362,000-acre Ocala National Forest and the 836-acre Tomoka State Park. Take a trail close to the Tomoka River and you’ll be in Tarzan country, where alliga- tors live in the marshlands, and ospreys nest in the tops of the cypress trees. Along the winding black waters of the Tomoka are stately live oak trees, with branches 70 feet long. Timber from these trees was used to build ships in the 19th century. There are many other pristine Florida parks along the coast and in the Central Florida area. These include Canaveral National Seashore, DeLeon Springs State Park, Blue Spring State Park, Hontoon Island State Park, Washington Oaks State Gardens, and Matanzas Inlet. Canoe in one of several rivers and creeks or hike along the Florida Trail. While the ocean and other bodies of water are some of the biggest outlets in Daytona Beach, there are many other activities to experience in the area. Golf at one of the many fine courses including LPGA International which is home of the LPGA or if you prefer indoor events such as con- certs, then the 225,000-square-foot Ocean Center multipurpose facility may be your hot spot. Travel back in time when you visit local historical points of inter- est such as the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, the Casements (winter home of John D. Rockefeller), the Bulow Plantation Ruins, the venerable Fairchild Oak, the Halifax Historical Museum, and the Wright Flyer monument at Embry-Riddle. If you feel the need for speed you can take the short trip to the Daytona International Speedway, home of “The Great American Race” – the Daytona 500. The enormous 480-acre motorsports complex boasts the most diverse schedule of racing on the globe, thus earning it the title of “World Center of Racing.” Hit the road with many weekend adventures are just a short trip away to historic and quaint St. Augus- tine – the Nation’s oldest city, the nearby Orlando area or make your way down to the coral reefs at the Florida Keys. Orlando is also a favorite destination of students visiting the many amusement parks includ- ing Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center, MGM Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Sea World, Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and several water parks. Embry-Riddle students have a special advan- tage: they don’t have to travel anywhere to reach the ideal vacation spot for Spring Break. The Daytona Beach area attracts college students from across the nation during the months of March and April.

Winters are mild and summers are warm in Daytona Beach thanks UNIVERSITY to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland. The area’s aver- THE age temperature year-round is 70.5 degrees.

2010 Embry-Riddle Volleyball Media Guide 39 ABOUT EMBRY-RIDDLE UNIVERSITY Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest, and most pres- tigious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The curriculum at Embry- Riddle covers the operation, engineering, research, manufacturing, marketing, and management of modern aircraft and the systems that support them. Each year, more than 34,000 students pursue degrees in more than 30 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona, and at more than 130 learning centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also provides distance education, or online learning, around the globe. Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations. The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus is located next to Daytona Beach Interna- tional Airport and has 4,500 undergraduate and 350 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cultural activities. The campus is within driving distance of the Ken- nedy Space Center and the Space Coast. Embry-Riddle is also within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports. History On Dec. 17, 1925, exactly 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Em- bry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Al- lied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane main- tenance. Under the leadership of John and Isabel McKay, Embry-Riddle expanded its in- ternational outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, with Jack R. Hunt as president, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. Financed with dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach, Florida, proved to be a moment of singular importance. It signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle and the start of its odyssey to world-class status. Academics Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern As- sociation of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels. At the Daytona Beach campus, the bachelor degree programs in Aerospace Engi- neering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics and Software Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Ac- creditation Board for Engineering and Technology while the bachelor degree pro- grams in Aeronautical Science, Aerospace Electronics, Air Traffic Management, Ap- plied Meteorology, Aviation Maintenance Science, Safety Science and the Business Administration programs are accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board, Inter- national. The bachelor degree programs in Business Administration and the Master of Business Administration program are accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. The certificate programs in Maintenance Technol- ogy (airframe and power plant) are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, the certificate programs in Flight (private, commercial, instrument, multi-engine, flight instructor and instrument flight instructor ratings) and Flight Dis- patch are approved by the FAA. Embry-Riddle’s goal is to provide students with a comprehensive education that will support a lifetime of achievement. The University’s “high-touch, high-tech” learn- ing environment, strong sense of community and caring faculty foster an atmosphere of success. At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate as- sistants - not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible in class, during office hours and through University-wide voice mail and e-mail systems. E TH UNIVERSITY

The Braddock Education Success Team (BEST) was incorporated into the Embry-Riddle Athletic Program during the 1999-2000 academic year. The BEST Program supports one of the major visions of the department – the development of student-athletes’ academic, social, spiritual and physical skills through a well-rounded education to prepare them for life after athletics. The BEST Program is a branch of the Braddock Foundation, which was established by Rob- ert and Lois Braddock. It is currently sponsored by their daughter, Cherie Keemar who resides locally in the Spruce Creek Fly-In, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael. The Future The Embry-Riddle Athletic Program has a vision for the future of the BEST Program. That vision includes a facility with approximately 2,000 square feet of space, dedicated solely to the program. The Braddock Center will be a part of the ICI Cen- ter and will house all of the academic support services that the BEST Program provides its student-athletes. The Braddock Center will provide student-athletes with state-of-the-art equipment in an academic en-
