Shinasha is some of the Indigenous groups with Ca. 60,587 population in Ethiopia, Africa continent, who are living Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State, near the Sudanese borderland. They have different social practices that distinguish them from others. They were part of the historical Gonga people who once lived on edges of the River Abay. Where were the early places of settlement of the Shinasha? What were the Social conditions, social changes and continuity in the Shinasha community? I address these questions by historically juxtaposing with social conditions and its dynamics with my interviews with the key informants and observations of changes in conditions of the Shinasha. This study highlights the geographic and background of the study area. The study tries to focus on the early settlement of the Shinasha and their conquest under imperial rule. It attempted to analyze the social organization of the Shinasha society. The significance of the paper is contributed to the understanding of the Social conditions and social changes and continuity of the Shinasha community in the historical outline. -

Wolf Human security is a framework related to the stability and sustainability of political, environmental, economical, and socio-cultural areas of concern. Water resources around the world are under increased pressure from increased development, growing populations, pollution, and global climate change. Large-scale dam development while still popular for political and economic development reasons, has been found to result in costs that outweigh benefits in environmental and socio-cultural sectors. This research assesses the human security impacts from dam development at three scales: the international river basin, the nation-state, and the local affected communities. Human security includes aspects of political, environmental, economic, and socio-cultural sectors. A combination of quantitatively-derived parameters from global indices and field-generated qualitative interviews and observations are employed to understand how perceptions of impacts change dependent on scale and sector. Two case studies are analyzed to capture three scales of human security impacts from dam development: the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia and the Xayaburi Dam on the Mekong River in Laos. A new human security measurement is developed to consider qualitative aspects of interview data in order to compare the human security stability of very secure, secure, slightly insecure, and insecure to the global indexes. -

This paper describes critical land-related institutional and governmental frameworks that have shaped the contemporary land governance and land lease contracts in Ethiopia. It also examines the effectiveness of the land lease process regarding economic, social, and environmental expectations from agricultural outsourcing. Both qualitative and quantitative data analyses were used and results showed that the size of the land cultivated by investors is significantly lower than the agreed-upon size in the contract. -

In connection to this, the country has initiated and implemented large-scale development projects such as the renaissance dam of Ethiopia and the Tana-Beles sugar factory in Beles sub basin region. A study is undertaken on deforestation and its protection strategy in Beles sub basin which focuses on estimating the pattern and magnitude of deforestation and the triggering factors of deforestation. The study uses NDVI data from two periods (2001 and 2012) to analyze the rate of deforestation and the associated biodiversity loss. Key informants interview and focus group discussions were held to generate the required data. Secondary data on ecological and socio-economic issues were obtained from different GIS and Satellite images, which were downscaled using NDVI technique. The result shows that deforestation and the resulting environmental degradation were the major problems in the Beles sub basin of Ethiopia. High population pressure, agricultural land expansion, large-scale investments, uncontrolled wildfire, illegal logging, firewood and charcoal production, and forced villegalization program were found to be the main drivers of deforestation.
