H.A.Mill. and H. sendtneri (Nees) Lindb. are described and illustrated from West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalaya, India. This constitutes the first record ofH. ramosus in Indian bryoflora. It is easily distinguished from hitherto known Indian species of the genus by orange brown plants having falcate leaves with acute leaf lobes 23–40 cells wide at base, up to 8 cells uniseriate towards apex, strongly expanded basal leaf lamina on dorsal side, and strong grooved vitta. Identification key to the Indian species of the genus is provided and its distribution in the country is discussed. The genus Herbertus Gray is represented in India by presence of three species and one subspecies of the genus eight species and one subspecies, viz. H. aduncus (Dicks.) Herbertus in Arunachal Pradesh, viz. H. aduncus subsp. Gray subsp. aduncus, H. armitanus (Steph.) Mishler, Chair Scleropodium is a genus of six species in the Brachytheciaceae. Although they are common in north temperate zones, they have not received monographic treatment in over a century. The aims of this study were to test species circumscriptions within the genus with molecular data, complete a thorough global taxonomic treatment of the genus, and to quantitatively investigate the ecological preferences of the species. A molecular phylogenetic study was conducted using 104 individuals spanning the range of morphological variation and the geographic extent of the genus. Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses and a statistical parsimony network analysis of ITS and the chloroplast rps4, bsbA2 and trnG regions were performed. Although slight differences were found among analyses, there were six clear molecular groups. Five of these corresponded directly to the species Scleropodium californicum, S. cespitans, S. julaceum, S. obtusifolium and S. touretii. The sixth species, S. occidentale, is new to science and is described here. It is similar in ecology and morphology to S. obtusifolium, but has several diagnostic features in both molecular markers and morphological characters. -

An index of published names of liverworts and hornworts between 2011 and 2012 is provided as part of a continued effort in working toward producing a world checklist of this group. The list includes 25 higher taxa, 154 species, 31 infraspecific taxa, and 17 autonyms for 2011 and 2012, 12 of them are fossils. A few taxa not covered by the earlier indices for 2000–2010 are also included. 75 species and 15 infraspecific taxa are new to science. Key words: Liverworts, hornworts, index, nomenclature Introduction Under the auspices of the Early Land Plants Today project, there has been a strong community-driven effort attempting to address the critical need to synthesize the vast nomenclatural, taxonomic and global distributional data for liverworts (Marchantiophyta) and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) (von Konrat et al. 2010a). These endeavours are critical in providing the foundation to develop a working checklist of liverworts and hornworts worldwide; the first version is projected to be published in 2014. -

Herbertaceae / Herbertus / Neotropics INTRODUCTION Species delimitation in Herbertus Gray (= Schisma Dumort., Herberta Gray mut. Lindb.; Grolle & Florschütz, 1975) is notoriously difficult and subject to much controversy (e.g., Miller,1965; Hodgetts,2003; Feldberg et al.,2004). Until recently, Herbertus sendtneri (Nees) Lindb.was known only from the Austrian Alpes,the Inselberg in Thuringia, Germany,and Asia (Müller,1954; Meinunger & Köckinger,2002). However,a combined morphological - molecular investigation (Feldberg et al.,2004) revealed the presence of Herbertus sendtneri in tropical America where the species was erroneously identified as H. subdentatus (Steph.) Fulf.(Fulford, 1963) or H. dicranus (Taylor ex Gottsche,Lindenb.& Nees) Steph. (Hodgetts,2003). Within Neotropical Herbertus, H. sendtneri stands out by its yellowish colour and the presence of numerous flagellae (Feldberg et al.,2004). The species is furthermore characterized by strongly secund, papillose leaves (Figs 2, 3) with coarse appendages at the base,and a vitta that bifurcates at ca 2/3 up the basal lamina (Figs 1, B, E, H; 2, B, I). -

It was prepared by Sam Bosanquet (Natural Resources Wales), Jonathan Cox (Natural England) and David Genney (Scottish Natural Heritage), and provides detailed guidance for use in selecting bryophyte sites throughout Great Britain to recommend for notification as SSSIs. It should be used in conjunction with Part 1 of the SSSI Selection Guidelines, as published in 2013 (Bainbridge et al 2013), which detail the overarching rationale, operational approach and criteria for selection of SSSIs. The main changes from the previous version of the chapter are: • only bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) are considered; • assemblage scoring is based on ecologically coherent assemblages; • scores for Nationally Scarce species are constant across Britain; • two Atlantic assemblages have scoring systems that include non-Scarce Hyperoceanic species; • a criterion for selecting the largest population of Red List species in each of England, Scotland and Wales is included; and • discontinuation of the Schedule 8 species selection criterion. -

Trevis. are reported as new to Hunan Province of China. Descriptions and discussion on the extensive variability of the species, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided. Herbertus lonchobasis H.A. Mill. and H. wichurae Steph. are synonymized with H. dicranus. Herbertus aduncus subsp. aduncus is rare in Hunan and was not present in man-made habitats. Herbertus dicranus is rather rare, but in primeval sites it is moderately common. Herbertus aduncus subsp. aduncus is prefer- ably epilithic, while H. dicranus grows on many substrates, which partly explains the difference in their occurrence. In Hunan, both species grow both in warm temperate and orotemperate zones which is in accordance with their global distribution. Gray Division: Marchantiophyta (incorrectly called Hepatophyta in U.S. government taxon databases (e.g., ITIS 2008); see Stotler and Crandall-Stotler 2008) Class: Jungermanniopsida Order: Jungermanniales Family: Herbertaceae Taxonomic Note: This species has been treated under a number of different names, some of them synonyms and some misapplied names of other species. According to Schofield (2007) the taxon present in our area is subsp. aduncus, endemic to Pacific North America. Technical Description: "Plants brownish to red-brown, sometimes dark green or wine-red, in polsters or turfs. Stems erect to recling, sometimes unbranched or irregularly few-branched but sometimes with numerous flagelliferous branches, main stems 1--10 cm. Leaves asymmetrically or symmetrically 2- lobed with lobes narrow, 4--7 times as long as wide, vitta strong, extending to middle of leaf or beyond, of elongate cells, leaves imbricate to second postically, occasionally somewhat squarrose. Sexual condition dioicous; androecia intercalary, perigonial leaves less deeply lobed than most leaves, not falcate; gynoecia terminal, with innovations becoming lateral with continued growth; perianth ovate, narrowed to mouth, divided into six lanceolate lobes." (Schofield 2007) Distinctive characters: The three rows of bifid leaves make this genus unmistakable among liverworts; the slender lobes make it more likely to be taken for a moss. Similar species: Only one other species of the genus in the region, H. dicranus. This species is slightly smaller than H. dicranus; has more deeply divided leaves (greater than 0.7) which are parallel sided to the base; and has underleaves which are little different from the lateral leaves. -

It is made up of a newly sequenced, assembled and annotated organellar genomes of two European specimens, which revealed the structure typical for liverworts, but also provided new insights into its microevolution. The plastome of N. curvifolia is the second smallest among photosynthetic liverworts, with the shortest known inverted repeats. Moreover, it is the smallest liverwort genome with a complete gene set, since two smaller genomes of Aneura mirabilis and Cololejeunea lanciloba are missing six and four protein-coding genes respectively.
