Freedom Sunday: The Power of Protest January–April Opening Reception | Wed | Jan 18 | 6:30 pm On December 6, 1987, a quarter million Jews and their supporters gathered in Washington DC to demonstrate solidarity with Soviet Jewry. Shortly after the event, known as “Freedom Sunday,” Soviet Jews received the right to leave, and eventually they flocked in large numbers to Israel, the United States, and elsewhere. Using art, texts, and artifacts, the exhibition commemorates the enormous contributions of members of our own community to bring about the success of Freedom Sunday and also acknowledges the stories of Russian émigrés in our community who experienced the hardships of life as Jews in the Soviet Union and the challenges of starting new lives in the United States. To supplement the texts in the exhibition, excerpts from sermons and speeches in the Shapiro Audio Archive will be available for listening on the PAS website.
