PERSONALITY PROFILE Paul Oakenfold British DJ/Producer Storms the States by Douglas Desmond PERSONALITY PROFILE Paul Oakenfold British DJ/producer storms the States By Douglas Desmond Anyone who’s into dance music has heard of Paul Oakenfold. One of the most successful Djs alive, he's spun his melodic progressive trance all over the planet. Although he s been popular in Europe and Asia for years— he opened some European dates of U2 s ZooTV tour and plays for thousands of fans every weekend— it wasn't until the 1998 release of Trancesport (Kinetic Records) that he became known in the States. Now he s mixed a new double-CD specifically for the American market. Perfecto Presents Another World (London/Sire), to showcase more diverse material It moves smoothly from under ground trance hits to a brilliant remix of Led Zeppelin s Babe I'm Gonna Leave You to music from Bladerunner over the course of two superbly programmed sets. Born in London, Oakenfold first gained exposure to DJ culture in New York, where he danced at trendsetting early 80s nightclubs like Studio 54 and the Paradise Garage He then returned to England— where he popularized acid house and early techno after hearing it on a holiday trip to Ibiza— before embracing trance in the mid 90s. He has enjoyed a second career as a producer, working with or remixing acts as diverse as U2 Snoop Doee and the Rolling Stones. Meet Paul Oakenfold ST S: You said several years ago that America lags behind Europe in the appreciation of dance music. Has America caught up? PO : Absolutely. It was behind in the sense that dance music actually came from America America started it— the English just took it and gave it a twist. Then dance culture became youth culture in England, whereas in America it was obviously more driven by rock and R&B and hip-hop. Now I actually think its better here. It s fresh, its exciting, its fun— that s why I got into this business. In England it s very political, because it s a billion-dollar business. Here it s really young and exciting. In England they want to be a DJ because of the money. Here you re all into it for the love of the music On success as a DJ: "Be as S T S: Do you have any advice for someone interested in getting into the industry either as a DJ or in promotions? original as possible. Get demos PO: Just focus on what youVe doing, and try to be as original as possible. From a DJ.ng out. Write loads of letters and point of view, get demos out. If you want to get into the record business, write loads of follow them up. Be as letters and follow them up. Be as professional as possible. And for producers, these days professional as possible." it s much easier because you can just burn a CD-R. So make it. and then burn it onto CD. and then give it to the Djs you want to hear it. STS: What are you working on at the moment? STATS PO: I m working on the score for a summer blockbuster called Swordfish, a $90 million DOB: Aug. 30. 1965 John Travolta film. And I’ve /ust done the remix for a Darren Aronofsky movie called Born and raised: London Requiem for a Dream i m layering dance beats and various different things. I also have a show that will be on university radio. It s going to be a mix show, not Favorite food: "Anything from a cafete just underground dance stuff, but bands that I've worked with. I've just finished the dance ria to a plush restaurant. From Cuban mix of the new U2 record. food to Japanese. I like all kinds." Favorite web sites: NASA (nasa.gov) STS: How do you thmk that the Internet will affect the development of dance music? the Four Seasons (fourseasons.com), PO: It s a very good medium for dance and it becomes like an underground network the Chelsea football club Brazils a perfect example. I was actually in Bra/,1 a month-and-a-half ago I doubt if (chelseafc.co.uk). there is a single club that will be playing, say. speed garage, in Brazil. People in Brazil would never be able to listen to ^ To students: Thanks for the support. Universities and colleges have always speed garage unless it was through the Internet. So that's Search keyword Oakenfold why its important. • been an important part of what I do. One day I would like to do a tour of uni versities in America.” 2 steamtunnels.net.

  • Elites, Communities and the Limited Benefits of Mentorship in Electronic
Elites, communities and the limited benefits of mentorship in electronic music Milan´ Janosov1, Federico Musciotto1, Federico Battiston1, and Gerardo Iniguez˜ 1, 2, 3,* 1Department of Network and Data Science, Central European University, Budapest, 1051, Hungary 2Department of Computer Science, Aalto University School of Science, Aalto, 00076, Finland 3IIMAS, Universidad Nacional Autonoma´ de Mexico,´ Ciudad de Mexico,´ 01000, Mexico *[email protected] Abstract While the emergence of success in creative professions, such as music, has been studied extensively, the link between individual success and collaboration is not yet fully uncovered. Here we aim to fill this gap by analyzing longitudinal data on the co-releasing and mentoring patterns of popular electronic music artists appearing in the annual Top 100 ranking of DJ Magazine. We find that while this ranking list of popularity publishes 100 names, only the top 20 is stable over time, showcasing a lock-in effect on the electronic music elite. Based on the temporal co-release network of top musicians, we extract a diverse community structure characterizing the electronic music industry. These groups of artists are temporally segregated, sequentially formed around leading musicians, and represent changes in arXiv:1908.10968v2 [physics.soc-ph] 31 Oct 2019 musical genres. We show that a major driving force behind the formation of music communities is mentorship: around half of musicians entering the top 100 have been mentored by current leading figures before they entered the list. We also find that mentees are unlikely to break into the top 20, yet have much higher expected best ranks than those who were not mentored.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This dissertation explores the idea of electronica as a descendent of electronic dance music, which, although embodying many related aesthetic qualities, operates within a different set of musical values. This needs to be understood in the context of how dance music's character, form and modes of performance relate to its specific cultural function. Repetitive beats (as espoused by house and techno in particular) comprise part of the cultural experience of rave. In combination with drug technologies and an ethos of collectivity, rave encapsulates a set of political phenomena that are entrenched within the formal and textural priorities of dance music. I discuss how modes of reception are affected by changes in these priorities, and to what extent post-dance music neglects the physicality that defines the political dimension of dance music's relationship to the body.

Introduction There are many beginnings to the history of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). It would be a mistake to exclude the impact that disco had upon house, techno, acid house, and dance music in general. While disco evolved mostly in the dance capital of America (New York), it proposed the idea that danceable songs could be mixed smoothly together, allowing for long term dancing to previously recorded music. Prior to the disco era, nightlife dancing was restricted to bands or jukeboxes, which limited variety and options of songs and genres. The selections of the DJs mattered more than their technical excellence at mixing.
